  • For 23k I'd be in a Cayman.  Not a bleeding Polo.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

I've got an s3 and vRS for under 500 lol

That will change big time if you get the RS3 then.

Assuming they weren't brand new???

Mine was ex dem, Mrs's was new.

Both new but 0% deal helped

Prices are crazy still considering dtd are offering brand new at similar prices to the used ones. I suppose it's supply and demand. Which at the moment demand is higher. Let's see how prices are in 2017

Those sticker prices are all well and good but I wonder what punters are actually paying for used R's?

Main dealer used cars usually offer little discount until they have been sitting for long time

Very True ,may be £500 if you are lucky Tom.

If they will only knock a paltry £500 off these prices it's no wonder there are so many sat there unsold....

Crazy overpriced compared to buying new imho,

6 months lead time from order placement.

Tom,how many M135i in dealers under a year old I wonder?

Many crazy people in world and also people who don't want to or can't wait.

Deals are on new cars, used never stack up in my experience via a dealer

62 showing on the bmw approved used site nationally (M135i less than 1 year old).

Cheapest £25490, most expensive £34450.

6 months lead time from order placement.

I thought it was less than that these days. Did you wait 6 months for yours Keith?

Even so, if I was after one I'd rather wait a few months and get a new one rather than pay those prices for used. But that's just my personal view.

Blimey Keith. £27k for an R same mileage as my leon, but no DCC and no DSG, and no heated / leather seats, and 2 doors missing! Mine had all of that, and was £5k less! Given how well the FWD diff is handling the extra oomph (and I think could take more yet) it's difficult to justify the price gap. I've just hooned to Dewsbury and back today via the snowy alps of south and mid wales. Not a foot wrong, and that was on Pirelli / Conti summer wellingtons.

Performance pack Gti has no traction compared to 4wd in wet so guess seat would be same.

Also guessing Keith will do much better come trade in

That said seat is a nice car, each to their own

Remember the 4wd system on the R is only part time. If the seat has "no traction" in comparison, then smoke me a kipper! Honda's going to f*****d too!

If Keith does better that means the next buyer will be even more disappointed.

12 weeks according to our two most local dealers.

Haldex gen 5 is the same as gen 4 in respect of it always running 5-10% to the rear axle and is in awd 'mode' when the vehicle is stationary so traction from the off is its party piece compared to the fwd Cupra. I still see a big gulf between the pricing though so, as always, it comes down to 'the R is without any doubt the better car... but is it really 5k better' Hmmm.

True. It's more than 5k though, if you take the cheapest used version Keith quoted, and add in the specs to make a like for like comparison, so DSG +£750 and DCC +£750 (which is around half the new option prices) takes it to £6.5k I've not added anything for leather seats, 5 doors etc. The Cupra is SEAT's version of the Golf GTI PP, not the R; so theoretically it's not really a valid comparison.

Id be buying new tbh so the cost difference is 5k but tbh id want the better, lighter brake and wheel combination that the sub 8 offers and therefore the difference would be bang on 3k. DCC I wouldn't spec as the R goes very well without it. And whilst its not the direct rival its in the same segment, same format (estate), similar product basically for 'similar' money so for me it is indeed comparable. Also, with the additional torque and power I don't see the Cupra as a directly comparable Golf PP alternative - its sitting in the middle imo :)

Obviously never driven an "R".................... :D

Even on very narrow twisty roads which force your speed down I was doing 10mph faster in a MK4 R32 around the corners on dry summer roads compared to a MK4 1.8T GTI....................& that's with the old laggy Haldex & the heavy 3.2lt V6 engine up front........you can feel the Haldex shunting the power & the rear driving the car around............or sliding it around........... :sun: ......the newer MK7 R is lighter up front & the Haldex is even better.........

Obviously also depends on how good a driver you are to make use of the Haldex system & if you can use it to your advantage...........

Also if people are quite happy to pay circa £1.3K for a DSG gearbox over a manual, which is still a gearbox, then the extra of going from 2wd to advanced 4wd is worth a few £K

a sub8 pack estate plus Mansfield's finest sauce?

I reckon that would be a hilarious Q car. Agree with DCC, I never use anything but the centre ground sport mode. It's a shame you have to buy heated leather seats too to get heated washer nozzles - latter should be standard IMO on every car.

well what I do know is you can rev and launch from a very high rpm in the haldex and it grips and goes. might not be the full new 40:60 full time 4wd but still has huge traction

value and choice is always a personal thing. and also randomly enough I need to like look of car too. I wouldn't buy car A because it was £1k cheaper if I liked look of Car B more

I don't think we can judge others, there is no one car fits all for everyone
