New Golf R

Featured Replies

Well as I have said before on here, I once followed Shifty from a meet in his extensively modified VRs Furby (I was in my boggo standard 123D), it didn't even have any interior trim as he had removed it all :D and as most older Brisky folk will testify he was a very handy wheelsmith (God I'm sounding like Jeremy Clonkosn's sister). funny thing was I followed him relatively easily cross country and even he admitted he wondered about whether the mods had been worth it. For the money he had spent, he could have bought my car. I liked my Golf and my Octy and my Toledo and my A4 so I certainly don't have any axe to grind towards VAG, but of all the many cars I have owned, the BMW has impressed me most overall (I owned 2 of the first Impreza turbos when they first came out too, very quick, but weren't so good to drive as the 123D).

I do remember this! I was behind the two of you :D

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Could you see anything for the smoke :D

I do remember reaching rather high speed on the motorway and could only keep up with the Shiftymobile if I stayed in it's slip stream and as I couldn't do this because of the coal sized pieces of solid soot bouncing off my bonnet and windscreen I gave up :D It was certainly quick that Furby (2.0 petrol quick!!)

Perhaps the Golf Climate can't keep the temperature at the desired setting if the external conditions change?

Isnt that what climate does?

Maintains a constant temp in the cab regardless of outside temp and conditions?

Yep :) it was a slight sarcastic way of saying that not being able to sync Dual Zone Climate isn't the end of the world. It would appear the mkII 1 series might not have the feature, but the LCI facelift might have and which the Golf definitely has

I see. (:

Find it difficult to pick up sarcasm on here haha.

I know what you mean, how many flame wars have started because of a misunderstanding, it's one of the reasons I've always used of lots of smilies :) Well that and the fact I love smilies :D Doesn't always work though

Oh yes it is..................

Also the fact that most BMW's still seem to come with non-working indicators........I mean on a £34K car WTF is all that about?.................... :p

six cylinders and rwd vs four cylinders and fwd? it would have to be a damn fancy instrument cluster :)

Shame that the R thread is being filled with crap again!

sorry my fault for annoying the BMW drivers.......................

fewer practical items fitted, more insurance cost, heavy front engine, only rear wheel drive (which is useless in winter compared to front, let alone 4wd)............& they go on about "the experience" ...................I had more of an "experience" in a MK4 golf R32 than the M135i..................& the mate who has the M135i still hankers after his 14yr old Scooby P1!...............now that really could shift........& as an experience.........wins hands down compared to the BMW!!...........

I did remind my mate that the R estate is out in the summer........for less than he paid for his M135i!...............& will cope if he has kids........... :D

You ought to!

because of laughing? this is in general car chat, it's not a formal debate and at what? 50 pages I really don't think there's a whole lot more to add without straying off topic. maybe you should move talk of your car to the members rides section, you might get less butt hurt :)

I don't drive a BMW. I know what you mean about more insurance though. Those Ferraris cost a fortune too, crazy and unfare. Funnily enough my Second Impreza was lightly tweaked with a few bits of Prodrive to bring it more in line with the P1 (the quick shift gearbox had a fab short throw, but the gearbox was not happy to rush through the gears :( ) and it was certainly rapid, but not an engaging car to drive. Give me RWD every time if it's entertainment I'm after. Oh and funnily enough the heavy engine M135 still has better weight balance (almost 50/.50) than the R with it's nose heavy 'light' little 4 pot, spooky. Weight distribution affects things like centre of mass and turning moments. I think your mate needs to sell his M135 as it seems to be too much car for him.

I have to say, out of the 2 it would be the m135i for me.

Golfs a nice car. But to be brutally honest, and its the same with bikes, i just dont rate inline 4's much. They get on with the job, yeah, but i dont find any character or anythin in them. Just abit boring IMO.

But then if we all liked the same things, we'd all buy a fabia. Oh, hang on..

The triple 5 spoke wheels must be really expensive then [emoji12]

Huh? Haha

Golf R ??

I thought I'd said something drastically wrong then ha ha

I'll not start on the weight distribution thing as I can't be bothered doing 50 pages plus that these conversations tend to end up with..........

As for the M135I being to much for my mate...................you can tell him if you want....................he knows how to handle it, even taken the car on track at one of those specially organised BMW days for M owners..........

he has also had Mitsu FTO's even the rare GRX? version............but really he finds the BMW not so "fun" on the roads up here, especially the back roads......the P1 which had various factory Prodrive options (bigger brakes, better clutch, bigger alloys) was so much more fun he says on these roads..............just needed to wear ear defenders on a long motorway journey.................

Like I said in my first post he couldn't believe how good & in some cases better my Golf interior was than his BMW. Considering my interior is very similar to the R interior & with the 4wd I really think he regrets the BMW........................

If BMW UK offered it in the X-drive version like they do in Germany then who knows?....................But then that would cost even more money & even greater insurance etc........I think the Golf R would still win on costs...............for just a small personally perceived "experience" that is a straight 6 (turbo'b) & rwd. IMO............

Dude you seem to take everything your mate says as gospel. If he's not happy with his car then fair enough but doesn't mean his opinion (or yours) is replicated across the majority of satisfied owners....

The turbo'd Six and RWD is the USP of this car and dominates the driving experience. It's the main reason most people who enjoy driving bought the car in the first place so I'd have to respectfully disagree about it being a "small perceived experience".

I can't shake the feeling that you might be slightly dissatisfied with your car too, maybe you wished you'd waited for a Golf R estate? No doubt they will be a cracking drive, can't wait to have ago in one when they arrive at the dealers. Fingers crossed I can persuade SWMBO she needs one lol!

Anyone know when the first R-estate demos are due in at dealers?
