New Golf R

Featured Replies

Having had a full time 4x4 Quattro and with the added Sports Diff, (the thing that cost £7K to replace under warranty when I broke it :D) I never really got to see proper oversteer, although it made the car a lot more pointy. Can you get the R to move the tail out and tuck the front in (without taking drastic measure) or is the car more set up for neutral/understeer unless provoked? My go in someone else car didn't really afford me the chance to scare him witless and find out for myself. I've been reading the reviews of the new TTS and it seems not only very quick, but pretty neutral, so I assume the golf is similar?

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

That video just proves what I thought about the MK7 R from my test drive.......but didn't get a chance to do that with it!............... :giggle:

You can however turn the ESC fully OFF if you use VCDS & use an existing code within the ABS ECU, so it is designed to work from the factory with the ESC OFF & not just in "sport".............even more fun!.......on track of course............ ;)

Having really driven down twisty back roads a MK4 R32, it is a bit more nose heavy due to the 3.2lt V6 engine, but again it is more neutral in it's handling than you would give it credit for, just with a std Haldex controller there is a bit of "lag" as it shunts power to the rear. However if you don't pussy-foot around, you can get the Haldex to basically remain "powered" so no lag........ ........or just fit the upgraded sport controller.

That V6 sound................. .................thankfully my next door neighbour /mate has one & I do the spanner work on it & get to drive it, mind you I'm teaching him to be a better driver & get the most out of it.............win/win situation, I don't have to pay for the huge fuel bills, which is where the new 2lt is way better along with being a lot lighter & way less nose heavy as that video shows...........

I still have a plan "B" if anything untoward  happens to my new car & still an R estate is in the mix, but only with a manual gearbox........oh well......... :S

Yes I've seen the Harris videos (I subscribe to his channels) ), but wondered in the real world, not some test track warriors view, what it was like.  Some of the Quattro Audis could be ordered with bigger front tyres! Which I always assumes was to neutralise the handing balance. Similar to the fact I have larger rear tyres on my Merc. The new TTS I believe no longer has this option? (very quick car, but awfully expensive now :( )

Henry Catchpole's verdict on their fast fleet Golf GTi with the Performance pack is that it's a better drive than the R (if not as powerful obviously). He prefers the pointiness of the LSD over AWD. Unfortunately, I cannot find the report anywhere on line, but it's in the latest mag, which I've only just got round to reading.

Perhaps. But after 60 pages there probably isn't much left to say about a Golf R :)

Quite.

Other than people who own one saying "went for a drive, it's good" or posting links from magazines saying something similar what more is there to say?

We know it's good.

We know VW have done a good job on it.

We know it's very capable and unlikely to come unstuck within the UK speed limit so is practically foolproof unless driven like a complete berk.

If you can only run one car it's a cracking choice.

I didn't go for it only because I run more than one car.

So can have something more fun within the UK speed limit. Less capable front wheel drive that's big on fun factor. And then something more raw for Sunday's and track days.

As a one shoe fits all it's pretty much as spot on as VW could do IMO.

Really as you say for a one car owner to do everything .

VW MK7 Golf "R" ................."end of"............ period...........nothing else matters............. :D

It just gets "discussions" going............ :x

And "understatement of the year award" goes to Mr "BossFox".................for.........."I didn't go for it only because I run more than one car".............................. :D .

Forums are what you want them to be, you can ignore threads if you chose to.

I have read every word & enjoyed them in a 66 page project build of 1 car and it is not finished yet, lots more to come i hope.

62 pages in a General Chat thread can be dipped in and out of or picked up late on and its just what you want it to be.

You can also chose what you want to reply to and post anything you like as long as you stay within forum rules. :)

Helps to pass the time.

I also thought my post far more on topic than most of the posts on this thread. :D

True, not so many Fiesta ST mentions.

I find the Fiesta ST pretty interesting myself, makes a change from an expensive 4-wheel drive 'Skoda'

It's one of the problems with test drives, you just can't get to know the car in a shortish time. I think you can tell if you aren't likely to get on with the car, but you can't really throw it about. I'm not talented enough to go beyond 7/10ths when I first drive a car (arbitrary figure of course) and it takes weeks if not months of incrementally pushing the car further and further to find out what it does and can do for me. Having had an all too brief go in an R confirmed I could live with it, but not whether I would love it. Although sometimes you get into a car and it just makes you smile (a F150 Lightning did that to me :) as well as another car that shall not be named ).

Similarly like you I run more than one car, this gets around my all weather problem and also gives me a second very different car to play with. If I had something like an R, S or TTS etc  would I keep a second car? Probably, as long as I could afford to, although instead of it being a 4x4 I might get a little roadster or something suitably silly :).

Guess his mates at the mag have their opinions as well.http://www.evo.co.uk/volkswagen/golf-r/15277/volkswagen-golf-r-review-specifications-0-60-time-and-price

Touch of each to their own, even with Journos.

Oh! for other readers, I really enjoyed my Wiltshire countryside blast today- in the one car that I Own  or need !! No lease, PCP or business owned etc. Used daily and not stored in a project garage.

Still averaging 34 mpg, no oil used, no problems to date and no dealer issues either.7500 miles and currently I'm a very happy owner.

Oh! yes, it's bloody good fun!

The Topic may just gain other informed comments /pages, by owners who actually will be running the Topic car and that can give real long term reports.  Or chose to enter interesting associated articles or videos.

I find the number of gearboxes in the VAG stable almost baffling in their proliferation, but I always figured that the Golf GTi/R had 6 speed DSGs as the 7 speed couldn't handle the increased torque. But doesn't the Tiguan diesel have a 7 Speed DSG? and if so, will they not eventually fit this to the R? or will they jump straight past 7 and go for 8-10 (I'm sure I read VAG were looking at 10 speed gearboxes of some kind). perhaps the big brother 400 will have something new?

Got that wrong, it's the Audi that's the expensive Skoda....................... :D

The VW is "Das Auto".................... :p .........

........40yr history of the Golf...........defo worth something................ :nerd:

£40k? lets hope the discounts are good lol

So is it to be R Estate or R 400

Different day, different decision .

£40k? lets hope the discounts are good lol

Well they do start with £1250 deposit contribution I think.

Looks like 6.5% finance. if you want that.

I'm not sure if some of the details are completely accurate though.

As a previous thread said he thought it was to be DSG only.

I liked the pictures of the estate much more than the car in the vid above :( Unless the ones in the earlier pictures had subtle bits of body kit that enhanced the look? Think I prefer the look of the hatch. But as I have predicted before, I think estates are more of a mans car :)

Update: I just had another look at images of the estate and it looks so much better in blue, it might just be a colour dependant thing with me. very nice in Blue :)

Other market competition:

Merc C63 AMG ESTATE £61K

BMW 3 series Touring 335 £42K SIMILAR SPEC.

Other market competition:

Merc C63 AMG ESTATE £61K

BMW 3 series Touring 335 £42K SIMILAR SPEC.

The Merc's in a totally different league at that price level, it's hardly competition for a Golf

Price and Performance different league more like.... Hairy chested V8 - Yes please!

One other various parts of the compare lists & then in the pDF price list it is all 6 speed DSG, so that part in the configurator is wrong......Not the first time VW have made a mess of the configurator..............also see the PDF listed the R at £33,585.........website is £33,140.......bloody idiots.... :dull:

EDIT

on the configurator you can add the colour MFD to the price, yet it should have it as standard as per hatch R & as per PDF pricelist.............

I don't think the golf 2.0 will be at competition with the C63. 0-60 dash yes but in most other ways its not what I think will be true competitors. it is a very small market but im sure will do ok. £40k for a golf in my eyes is madness but in many others it wont.
