Sound Gen in vRS

Featured Replies

First of all apologies for asking, I know it's been asked a million times but I've read the posts and can't see if there is a definitive solution to turning down the sound gen in the vRS other than disconnecting it, which I don't want to do.  I drive in sports mode as I prefer the feel of the car, at first the sound gen was ok but now it's starting to annoy.

Anyone give me a quick guide to which menus to try?

  • Assume you're talking about the TDi if you're referring to the fake exhaust tailpipe, so presumably you'd find it more sporty to listen to the "roar" of a diesel engine?  It's a fairly common feature

  • Yeah. Unplugging/disabling the SG is a must do mod IMO. Much better now.

  • Hi   disconnected mine on Saturday, much better and quiet   what a waste of time this sound generator and should have option to turn down in main menu

You need VCDS or I think your dealer may be able to turn it down.  There's no settings for it in the infotainment, which is a bit of an oversight..... I just unplugged mine :)

Damn, thanks.

The general consensus is that the sound gen is amazing, and it is a shame Skoda didn't offer the facility to turn it up.....

Personally, I love it (in the TDi).  Helps me forget I'm contributing to the death of the naturally aspirated engine....

Where is it, so I can disconnect mine?

What are people doing with the ends of the plug? Do they just hang there? I keep meaning to get mine unplugged. Hopefully this weekend, weather dependant.

I just tucked it behind some other cables so it didn't rattle, i did plan to wrap it in plastic to keep it dry but as I could only just get two fingers in there to unplug it that wasn't going to happen....  It's out of the way of any rain or anything anyway so will probably be ok.

I wrapped some foam rubber on my sound generator module today and refitted it. Seems to be better now, rattle gone, (for now anyway) and a bit quieter in normal and sport mode. At present, looks like I have a solution to the problems with mine. Have to say it was a bit awkward to remove and replace though.

Use heat shrink sleeve and fasten somewhere with a tiewrap

I wrapped mine in cling film and secured it to another set of cables with a cable tie. I'm glad to have got rid of that fake boxer burble (nice though it was).

Don't have a vRS but if I did I'd be embarassed to say the noise was from an electronic sound generator. Fake exhaust tailpipe and noise generator really lets the car down.

You forgot the fact that the 150CR will give it a damn good run for its money due to being a lot lighter too still, the TDI was only £300 more than the petrol-head version

I think the diesels feel faster than they actually are due to the low down shove. having test drove the vrs diesel before mine which is quicker than the 150tdi and although torquey is no match for the tsi engine and at over 8 seconds to 60 is in fact a fare bit slower. Its a shame about the sound generator, why they couldn't make the exhaust sing a little is beyond me. Fake tips aren't so bad on the tsi as at least the gasses come from both sides.

For those tsi owners that have unplugged the sound generator, how does the car sound without it?

I got mine turned down to 50%,a lot more bareable now it gets drowned out by planet rock and the ressonance from passenger side b post has gone

Embarrassed is probably the wrong word - I'd be more "embarrassed" to drive around in a non-vRS Octavia....

Have a word with your dealer ..... once they are pointed in the right direction they can disable it ..... in fact I heard Skoda issued some of them with info on how to do it ;)

Had mine turned down to 0% and its excellent now, makes cruising much quieter :)

is the difference very noticeable with sound generator? It seems on my car it is disabled, because I cannot really tell the difference between normal and sport mods in sound, may be just a little bit, but it could be my imagination:) Probably need to contact the dealer, because I want more rattling and noise in sport:)

IMO the sound gen is a good enough idea, but stupidly implemented within the VRS. For me the "reverberations" sound okay within Eco mode, become intrusive within Normal, and are flipping irritating within Sport. As I never use Eco and rarely use Sport I can live with the drone, but it would have been much much better if Skoda had allowed user customisation.

If anyone at SUK is listening, please push for a firmware update so that drivers can turn the sound up or down. Other cars can do this.

Yep, it would have been perfect if the individual mode would be more customizable. I would also like sport mode to automatically set ESP to sport.

By the way can anyone confirm if my sound generator is working or not, here is a short clip:

i really do not hear any difference, i might be deaf :)

thanks!

That very much depends on the dealer/country. When I went to the dealership from where I've bought the car, they point blank refused to code anything on the car stating their VAS tool is unable to do anything that I asked (had a list of 5 things for them to code). They've also given a sort of official looking paper stating that I'd be losing my warranty if I try and get that coding done anyway.

Utter BS they are feeding you IMO. The proper VAG software can do it, I know for fact .... I can't see there being a warranty issue with turning of a noise in no way related to safety !

But as it the dealers stance, there isn't a lot you can do apart from look for a trusted third party :/

Just unplugged mine. Wrapped the end up with some cling film so should be ok there. Just about to go out for a spin to see what I think. Didn't bother taking the wipers off as I couldn't haha. Just enough space to get your hand in though. Will report back soon.

Each to their own opinion, I guess I'm old school, and like real things.

If I wanted sport it would be a petrol engine making its own noise.

My opinion - electronic noise generator in the car is ridiculous.
