Tom, wasn't Cotswolds doing a deal on bodywork bits as well as the MPE?

Yeah think so! They do good deals on all the parts, especially so for forum members (they sponsor babybmw I recall).

Tom,

Not currently feeling the need to downsize or down spec or lower my car's capability.lol

May be one day when the circumstances arise. !lol

Hope someone gets the pleasure out of driving it, as you obviously did but at the right price.lol

Ouch! ;-)

Didn't think I'd be driving the baby Beemer so much this winter, but it's been terrific fun with all these wet roads. Had a 70 miles trip through Co Durham and North Yorkshire yesterday and it was sooooo enjoyable. Probably would have struggled to keep up with your Mini Tom, but it was a 'squiggleicious' day :) (have I invented a word?)

Ouch! ;-)

its not what you drive.. its how you drive it ;)

Things I did not know about the 135 that .

  1. It is actually just under 3 litres but BMW use the 135 label as they class it performing like a 3.5 litre
  2. Latest version is 320hp/235 kw, certainly more than my old 3.5 litre Rover but not quite the output of the latest 2.5 litre 5 cylinder Audi engine http://www.worldcarfans.com/1160104102515/audi-tt-rs-to-have-395-hp-from-five-cylinder-2-5-liter-turbo
  3. Maximum permissable weight is 565 kgs for passengers and luggage
  4. Has a practical tank range of about 300 miles.
  5. Did a 8:18 at the Ring

Interesting I find.

Interesting I find.

The BMW engine naming system is quite baffling these days and seems to bear to real relation whatsoever to capacity anymore :-)

Think the latest engine in it produces 326PS. Mine was 326 bhp on rolling road and my mates (also standard power) produced 341bhp on it. He was chuffed with that as you can imagine lol.

I found tank range in mine varied from low 200s to 450 odd depending on journey type.

The ring time for the M135i doesn't sound that great, I wonder if it was done again on a different day with another driver there would be a significant difference? Not that it matters much hehe.

1. really? did you know the 335d is actually a 3.0 twin turbo.. and the 116i is actually a 2.0? etc etc. It goes on. It seems more about power output rated within their range than cubic capacity.

2. nothing good about a stressed engine. Under-stressed is often better in the long run.

3. is 565kg an issue? maybe a diet would help?

4. 300 interesting miles are better than 600 boring ones.

5. lovely

:D:)

It get sillier with the new M140 that's rumoured to be coming out eventually (it's 3.0 :D )

I think the advantage of the low stress bigger capacity is also very little lag as the engine has some grunt even before the turbo wakes up and the fact it has peak torque's at only 1,300 rpm! beats most diesels :)

I easily get more than 300 miles out of a tank if I am not playing silly buggers. motorway miles in 'eco' prove 35 mpg easily :)

1.Intel started to do this Processors too.  Thought it was not a good idea, one person reasonable 3 litre is another's cooking, just tell us the power or go back to CCs or cubic inches maybe if we leave the EU.

2. Agreed though if an engine is well built then it can be built for the power.  The BMW engine in the i8 is awesome, would expect it would last. The Fabia 2 VRS was pretty tech with 130 hp per litre and mine did 100k and was still sweet as a nut.  Doing short journeys kills most engines.

3.  Use to do road exercises with Dept of Tran, Police, Social as well as me with HMRC.  We found seizing vehicles that were overweight as effective as seizing their bootleg cargo.  Many road users would be amazed how easy it is to be overwieght in a cart.  1 series is just 4 seater if I recall right but if you are going out with mates and they are all big guys, rugger b*ggers etc, have a few bags of kit, you have opted for the car wheel option and have a jack, a few tools etc it is amazing how that half a tonne is eaten up. Seized one Tranny van half full of booze, decanted half in to another tranny and both were still on the max weight.

4. Agreed but I have a pet hate of filling up twice in a day.  Some cars I could vent the petrol tank and get another 5 litres and 40/50 miles extra range in but 400 miles is usually a min requirement for me.

5. Slightly odd slowish time when the Clio RS is 8:32, segment B, and the Megane RS, segment C, only 275hp is sub 8 minute.  Perhaps needs a couple of paving slabs in the boot?

Edited by lol-lol

The M2 only just breaks the 8 minute barrier although I suspect the enjoyment factor was huge :) James May is right, the numbers don't tell the tale.

That clio is impressive by anyones standards around the ring though. Really impressive.

All these cars presumably have the 250 kph/155 mph limiter removed as the last couple of miles on the Ring one should expect to be doing 160/170 if the car is capable and that can make a few seconds difference.  Getting the tail to behave, though an interesting commentary from a US test around Laguna (manual version, 8 speed ZF sounds better to me, same make of box as in my Jaag, luvely)...

The link doesn't work for me (please tell me it isn't for the price of a secondhand car)

Tom,

As a matter of interest what was the % depreciation at trade-in on the M135i after approx 18 months.

Not to be condoned, as the driver is an ar$e, but it shows how 'weildy' the baby Beemer is

or for Keith

Amanda, Thank you but I was asking Tom specifically.

Tom,

Tricky to work out, depends on if you start at list price or the price i actually paid and whether you use the book trade in figure or the inflated value they effectively paid by using the BMW loyalty bonus etc.

I paid 29.5k (36k list) and the official trade in value was 22.5k so it lost 7k in 18months which I believe is about 23%?

Thanks very much for that Tom,you could have PM'd me.

Oh and number 6 would be it has the usual (for BMW) 50/50 axle weight distribution.

Is that a plus for mid-corner handling but a somewhat negative when reapplying full power when only half the weight is over the driven wheels?

Porsche, who know a thing or two about RWD cars tend to have 60/66% of weight over rear axle.  FWD often also have about 60% of weight over their driven wheels.

A personal dis-like of mine, for my FWD cars, is, particularly when wet, icy, snowy, is having to carry more load in the way of boot weight or even fuel and it making the driven axle weight less.   At least in the Beemer you can add ballast weight where as with FWD drive cars you cannot really do that.  Extreme examples of lower percentage weight over driven axle are the Merc 63s I suppose and an example of fish tail city when apply mucho right foot.  Got my paving slabs ready for the Jaag if/when the snow comes.

Keith the thread is about the M135, not about bloody second hand cars all the time. I could fill up the alex-e3's Golf R thread with secondhand prices of Golfs, but it would be crazy! If I or Tom or Hmmm wanted a ruddy secondhand car we would have a look for one and I am sure we can do that as well as yourself. In fact as Tom and I have first hand experience of the car, we could probably do it even more successfully. nobody has asked for a price on an M135i, or a link that doesn't work, that in theory goes to display some money numbers that are required to be swapped if you want to go away with a automobile bearing the name of the thread and not getting arrested. I realise you genuinely like looking a secondhand car prices, we all do at some time. But please, at least not in this thread. I'm not trying to fall out with you, VIP or not

As petrol heads, a fantasy garage is a serious pastime and I can see why you fantasise over second hand cars, but like most fantasies, they are best kept private.

Mmm private fantasies. Can we have a new thread please?? :)

You have not accounted for the affect of weight transfer due to acceleration. :)

That's why you can launch much harder in a RWD car even if it has 50% over the driven wheels compared to upto 70% in some FWD cars. Rear suspension compresses and front suspension lifts on acceleration.

Same goes for accelerating out of corners.

The draw back is if the road is slick due to excessive water or winter weather and you do not have the grip to provide the acceleration for weight transfer to occur.
