Bi-Xenon lights with AFS

Featured Replies

My car has Bi-Xenon lights with AFS. Yesterday I had a long drive at night.

First thing I noticed that few drivers coming from other direction were flashing to me although I didnt had high lights turned on. Now I know Bi-Xenon usually have a high glow, which can be mistaken for high lights, I have experienced this myself few times. In either case, there is no adjustments for the Bi-Xenon lights inside the cabin, isnt it? Even if some adjustments needed to be made, I would need to take it to the dealer?

Second thing, the AFS function, I was trying to see how this works when turning into a corner but cant seem to notice a difference, at least from my drivers perspective. How do you test this actually works?

bi -xenons are self levelling so I presume this would be a dealer check

Regarding the cornering go somewhere where there are no street lights with bends and you can actually see them move .

AFS function only works in Auto-lights mode

Self Levelling as greatdane says.  One thing I found with my Audi was I was getting flashed at too, and eventually decided it was happening too often - so got it checked by Audi to be told they were set (from new !) and were outwith the rules/legislation/MOT range by quite some way.  Amazing from new that these things aren't checked, but it can def happen !

And they don't work in Eco mode if you have driving mode selection.

With regards to people thinking you've got high beam on I get that alot, although never from people with Xenons themselves.  I had a quick check online for a rough guide to how to adjust normal headlights and checked the levels with the aid of a wall at night and they looked ok.

Frankly I just flash my lights back at people - they soon stop when they get the high beams in their face.

Ok, I didnt know that, I always set my switch far right.

But that defeats the purpose of haveing Auto lights, just set it to Auto and you never have to touch them again.

Not sure if I want my bi-xenon lights keep switching on/off all the time by auto mechanism, it may considerably shorter light bulb lift time.

They only switch on when it's dark outside, I.E. night time, dark clouds  or in a tunnel............

:D They're only going to come when needed which is when you should be switching them on yourself anyway.....

You will find they come on in the rain as well and on my car it doesn't make any difference if I have that option selected on or off in the car settings they still come on in the rain if set to auto on the switch.

Do they also come on if you've been driving for a certain time at a certain speed (83mph IIRC) as they did in the mk2FL?

(83mph IIRC)

If it was 88mph, I could understand...

Actually that appears to be spot on as I've just found this in another post:-

If the automatic light control* has been switched on and the vehicle speed is over 140 km/h for at least 10 seconds, the side lights and low beam are switched on automatically. If the vehicle speed is below 65 km/h for at least 2 minutes, the lights are switched off.

Shame - 140 kph is 87 mph (or 86.992 to be precise).

Its less stressful to drive at night with the lights turned off.

Ermm?...Funny but I would find it less stressful to be able to see at night ;)

Yeah but in the garage every morning and driving back in even when its sunny outside and in car park bulidings too they spark up if you have set to auto too.

I thought xenons have a set number of start ups per bulb so doing this every day of the year unnecessarily won't help the life span and they are expensive to replace so...?

They come on in my Superb at 140kph........I think they're known as "autobahn lights" in Germany.........as in "Get out of my way...quickly!"

Starting the engine every day wears that out as well!

And as for actually driving your car, think of how much your tyres wear!

We leave our lights "off" ( & turn them when we think necessary.....) rather than leave then in auto mode,  so we don't have such worries re. potential life-span, etc.

That's what I meant about not using the 'auto' setting, I do the above also. I was referring to the comment about the auto setting being smart enough to only work when required, nope.

Just like the wipers too incidentally.....
