Windows fogging up

Featured Replies

As autumn beings to rear it's ugly head, I've started to have problems with the windows fogging up.

Every single window in the car seems to fog up. even with fan on high, the heat on max and the air con switched on the side windows and rear window especially seem to take an age to clear.

After 5 mins of warming up and a short 15 minute drive home from work, the rear window still hasn't cleared. Surely these are signs of water ingress?

I've never had this much of a problem on my previous cars... even my (then) 16 year old Peugeot 106 was better at this!

I bought the car second hand and got a 1 year warranty through the dealer, could this be sorted under warranty, would the dealership be obliged to provide me with a courtesy car till mine is ready. The dealership is a good 90minute drive from where I live

I have the same issue as well, with the Heaters not powerful enough to clear the windows. My Old Mondeo used to clear the windows in minutes, plus my mirror heaters are not much to be desired either

Mine's just started doing it.  Not too badly but enough to be annoying in the morning when I want to get to work.  I've been thinking about actually getting a small mains power dehumidifier and just leaving it running in my car....

My Rapid has this too and so did my previous Octavia. It's a common problem with these as stated. Strangely my Citigo doesn't suffer with this much (yet) [emoji6]

Design flaw, my 2012 vRS used to do it from new with no water leaks.

Used to drive me mad - I even had the condensation so bad that water would run down the inside of the windscreen.

I can only hope my mk3 isn't as bad, so far so good but who knows

The humidity has been very high for a few days due to all the recent rain. Now with the cold weather, even the smallest amount of moisture in the car will cause it to steam up. Even wet feet or clothing could do it.

Both my late fathers Fabia and my Audi have been misted internally for the last couple of mornings and evening due to the increased moisture level.

The Aircon is disabled below 4C to stop ice forming, so on a freezing morning it does not matter if you have the AC on or off its not going to do anything.

As above. Dehumidifier bags work a treat. Used to have exactly the same issue on the Octavia, albeit from water dripping in when the boot was opened after rain.

One bag in the boot and no more foggy windows.

I have posted this many times but I will say again that the secret is simply to turn off the air-conditioning once the cold weather starts. If you must use it then at least turn it off ten minutes before you stop so that the system has a chance to clear itself of all the accumulated condensation. That is all you need to do. Simples.

(The foggy windows result from the substantial amount of condensation within the aircon unit re-evaporating and condensing on the coolest part of the cabin - the windows. The more humid the weather, the greater the amount of condensation in the aircon)

I thought when you hit the demisting button the AC cam on anyway because the air it produces is dryer?

I can only suggest breathing less.

I tried this last year and found that I got no real improvement in window demisting.

Also, when switching the aircon back on in the spring I got the horrible sweaty feet smell from the bacteria build up in the system. It took several applications of system cleaner to get rid of the pong!

This year, I have kept the aircon on 100% of the time since the spring and have found no issues with misting up, even over the past few weeks. It would seem that keeping the aircon on all the time reduces the moisture in the air and therefore reduces the amount of condensation generated in the mornings.

Perhaps it varies from car to car?

Good luck

Daft as it sounds it can often be helped by replacing the pollen filter.

Asda are currently selling a small plastic dehumidifier tub with white crystals in it for £1. I got one last year and put it in the boot and bought another one a couple of months back. When I went in the boot this morning I noticed that all the crystals had disappeared in the original one, and there was now 2 inches of water in the bottom of the container, so I guess it works !!

Time to buy another one methinks.

My 2011 car with climate control puts fans and heat to max with ac on when the front screen demister button is pressed.

I leave it on ac auto all year round. Never have any problems with it.

I can't say I've ever had a issue but like above my ac is on auto all year round.

How do you do this on a car with climate control. Econ button and avoid using Auto?

Yep, hit ECON, the Auto light and A/C light will go out.

When you turn off the engine and turn it back on again it'll still be in ECON.

I found last winter the best way to reduce the steamy windows was to turn econ mode on all the time and I also have 2 of the pingi moisture bags in the car too.

I also try and avoid doing anything in the back of the car that produces excess steam...

You can still use Auto. Press the auto button, then econ then set your temperature. Sorted.

Thanks

Will try and pick up some of those bags to help matters

Thats one hot cuppa there is it not, sure to steam any ones interior Lol

My aircon is on all the time, set to auto and I still mist up in the cold mornings. If I turn the aircon off at any stage, the windows fog up instantly

Those bags near Clarkson are the best I've seen all night.

Aircon usually very effective in all weathers. My car does that every year when the temperature drops and the humidity increases# Even with climatronic on auto all year#r I turn the heating up to max for a while when on a long trip# Seems to help but the UK climate is so variable# Keep a duster for emergency demisting# Mine has suddenly  gone from tolerable to zero vision at traffic lights#

BTW  hot coffee can seriously damage your bits. As a McDonalds customer found out in the USA.
