Poor fuel consumption?

Featured Replies

I brimmed the tank the other day and I'm a bit confused about this cars fuel consumption.

From full to that gauge position only 164 miles [emoji15]

Is it because of its low miles still?

It's a bit worrying.

It's a 1.2 TSi engine. In that 164 miles it's had a large variation in driving on mixed roads but no motorway.

  • I believe that you keep focusing on the wrong thing (gauge position) and still ignoring what's really important (avg consumption).   Anyway, when you refuel the car, you will be a able to calculate

  • Yeh poss its like everything though, its how you drive it. If you want to do 70-80 on the motorway the diesel im sure will be WAYYYYY ahead of the tsi. However i reckon at 55-60 there won't be much in

However, an average consumption of 50.3 mpg sounds great for a 1.2 TSi. What were you expecting?

If you are concerned about the gauge position, bear in mind that in most cars the needle moves disproportionally to the actual consumption (usually tends to be "flattering" when full, however in our cars it moves from full really quickly).

Got about the same last night on my 36 mile commute back home, just over 50 mpg average consumption and the gauge reading doesn't look far off from what I'd expect to see, depending on usage/conditions. My last fill to fill was the worst to date apart from when new at just over 47 mpg, however the weather has been poor and the car did one or two shorter trips instead of just commuting to work and back.

Still very happy with it; giving a consumption between that achieved with the previous TDI Yeti 4x4 and Octavia TDI 4x4 and its better than we get from our TSI Fabia, albeit it does a lost of mixed up journeys.

Nooooo thats not right at all my 1.2 tsi after 150-160 miles the needle will be showing two small ticks down from full. It's a shame it doesnt continue at this pace :-). I dont recall mine doing that from new either? However like already stated 50+mpg is showing your doing the right thing with the way your driving it. Let us know what the trip says when you have 20-30 miles range left :-)

Thanks for the replies. To me it looks like the car has used nearly half a tank and only done 164 miles [emoji15]

I use my Citigo more because of the better fuel consumption. I'm not comparing but I think it's not right or maybe it's because of the low mileage?

Anyway, when you refuel the car, you will be a able to calculate the actual consumption, that is the only thing that really matters!

Altho the short term average fuel consumption aint the best guide! You can drive like your arse is on fire for 200 miles then granny it for 50 and it will say 50mpg. The long term (Press the little button underneath?) average holds more value!

Thanks again for your valid information.

The overall average is reading 47.9mpg.

I've been a diesel owner for 7 years so this sent alarm bells ringing when I saw the quick decrease in fuel which is something I'm not used to.

I had a Fabia 1.6tdi as a courtesy car the other day whilst the Rapid was in for a service and in my normal kind of driving the figures it was giving were no better than the Rapid (TSI)

I suspect the diesel would excel on the motorway though.

Yeh poss its like everything though, its how you drive it. If you want to do 70-80 on the motorway the diesel im sure will be WAYYYYY ahead of the tsi. However i reckon at 55-60 there won't be much in it. We did a trip down to Windsor from Lancashire and i just set it about 58 the whole way.... The MPG Figures flipping amazin! It was reading over 65 at one point! My previous car was a Leon TDI FR though so maybe im being a bit harsh on diesel engines the 1.6 tdi might be saying 80+mpg with the same kind of driving.

All round though all the engines apart from the 1.2 non-tsi are bluddy fantastic engines I reckon. All I need to do to reassure myself is look at how much I can get in the boot and the back seats and then look at the MPG figure. I dont think theres much that can touch it for that!!!

I do about 50 50 overall but my figures are not good, last fill up was under 32 mpg best was 42, I got that once through all mways driving. Its the 105 tsi but not too impressed but hoping that it improves when the engine loosens up (its done just underk 3)

We have roadworks all the way to town at the moment, so rarely get into 6th gear. Our car is averaging 46mpg which I am pleased with for 1.2 TSI

I have a fiat 500L 1.3 tdi nd I av done 170 miles this week and used half a tank but it has been cold this week so I think its that more than anything

I'm probably worrying over nothing as its only done 1300 miles so far because i rarely use it. Just getting used to petrol after my diesel Octavia which the Citigo is beating that by miles [emoji106]

Managed to get a image of our Spacebacks fuel gauge position tonight with 176 miles done, fractionally better reading however the car has more miles under its belt and been commuting to work and back since the last refuel; approx 36 miles each way on open A roads, albeit hilly in parts.

Exactly what I have found.

Drive it "normally" ie accelerating like you want to revving it through the gears and struggles to get 50 mpg over a 10 mile or so journey.  Drive it like there is a house brick under the accelerator peddle and 70 mpg possible.  Motorways is where the biggest difference will be in both fuel consumption and relaxed revs ie some 32 mph/1000 revs for the diesel DSG which is what I am looking for probably in my next car.

Hi,

Just did over 300miles up / down the A9 to Inverness (+drive up to ski slope at Aviemore) and all around Inverness area + some hairy single track roads :peek:

Car is Rapid 1.4TSI DSG

The A9 now has average speed cameras the whole 108miles from Perth and my speed was mixed between 50mph (behind lorries restricted to 50mph) to 60 and 70mph stretches. Occasional bursts to overtake the lorries.

I averaged 51.4mpg (indicated digitally)

So, well pleased with that outcome.

The wife is getting 60mpg everyday going mostly on the motorway on a 46 mile return trip, when we first had a drive to southport and back I got 60 mpg on the A580 with plenty of roundabouts and she got 70mpg on the motorway !

Just thought I would post piccy of my dash at ~160miles to show you how much fuel i've used and what my long term AV MPG reads. Mine is 1.2 tsi 86bhp...

Nice result so far [emoji106]

This is a bit worrying as my average is around 38, the best being 42. I'm not racing it either, was thinking it may be because its the 105 PS but not from what others are saying

Indeed the 86 hp version is only suppose to be about 5% better on fuel than the 105 hp but it is ther usual case of the real live fuel consumption being about 20% worse than quoted and particularly so if most your journeys are short ie 5 to 10 miles whereas the test are done in warm ambient temperatures where the warm up phase is shorter and the car is acheiving near the quoted MPG in a shorter time period.

Around town most cars only do around 30 mpg.  Until we get to the stage where half or even three quarters of the available power comes from batteries and the IC engine is only there to charge the batteries and give a bit of a boost when needed relatively naff economy will be the norm.

If I have a short ie 3 mile of less journey to do, borrow the son's Naturally Aspirated 1 litre car, warm in half a mile, 50 mpg.

  • 3 weeks later...

Driving home from work yesterday with my car which had 50 miles on it and the engine was cold I was getting 45mpg.

My drive home consists of driving round an industrial estate, onto a 60mph road for a mile with a 30mph bend at the bottom, accelerate for a bit then up to a roundabout, after this its another long straight then a 40mph bend up to a roundabout, into my estate then round to my house and into the drive. Total distance is 3.5 miles.

The same drive in the Honda with 16000 miles on it was giving me 32mpg

Awesome mpg you got for a cold engine.  My Water Temp gauge doesn't reach normal until 4 miles are done, and at that point the Oil Temp isn't yet reading at all -being less than 50C.
