Briskoda How Fast 2015 Bedford 02/05/2015

NOTE:

For all the racing drivers and mini-stigs, you can't compare previous lap times to what you get this year.

They have made some small changes to the circuit.

MSV have started a new leaderboard from 2015 to reflect the changes.

Any clues where, Richard?

Any clues where, Richard?

Mainly they are trying to keep everyone off the grass, so less cutting of the first kerb going into the two chicanes over the back.

Before you could drive over the first kerb as the cones were only on the following right and then left.

When I did the GT circuit which involves about 60% of the West (How Fast) they have now put cones on the first left into the chicanes too, which weren't there before.

They have put new grass down and don't want you on it.

We had to sign a disclaimer to say we'd try to keep off the new grass.

Any predictions on how many mm of tyre tread I'd consume ??

Not a lot.  2mm tops if you drive like a total loon.

It's more wear to the edges which levels out once you get back on the road.

Hmmm...half interested in bringing another Yeti along.

What's making me hesitant is:

 - I've never done any track type stuff before

 - My Yeti is pretty much stock (aside from Yellowstuff front pads, and hopefully a Stage 1 map if my STS turns up beforehand)

 - I worry about damaging the car

...so I'd probably be pretty slow !

its not busy, and a great rack to start on, not too much high speed stuff, and not much to hit!

The first year I just had a stock Yeti with a remap.

Still good fun and a good taster as it's just for a few hours.

^^^ and boss ran a yeti 170 with a map and brakes, and was suprisingly quick , (may be to do with the isanity of the driver though ;) ) so you will not be "slow" go for it!

Not long now to How Fast, if anybody is going the night before, I will be staying at the Kettering Premier Inn where food and a few drinks will be consumed.

 Maybe see you there.

Cheers.

Need to replace one pair beforehand then :)

Any other tips for a track newbie in a Yeti ?

I guess I need to:

 - take the winters off ;)

 - leave the back seats, kids seats, and all the other detritus currently in the boot, at home

I wouldn't put brand new tyres on before.

The deeper tread means it moves around and causes more wear.

How much tread do the worst ones have?

As I only have two sets of wheels, in different sizes (winter & summer), I think I have 2 options:

 - slide around on the winters

 - run summers with 1 new pair

Think I'll have to go with the summers...

As the fronts wear more quickly than the rears, I guess I should put the new ones on the rear where they won't get such a hard time ?

I've just ordered a new pair, if I get them on this week they'll at least have had a few hundred miles use beforehand.

EDIT: You never know, we may have monsoon conditions, in which case lots of tread and 4wd might give me some hope ??

Wet is certainly much more fun, even drying wet. You will be going slower and you will have a great driving technique improvement session. Nothing like a wet track shows you how to find grip.

As for the tyres, you mentioned 2mm. Was it above legal limit or 2mm overall?

You might be on to sth here putting new boots on the rear. Tre wear greatly depends on your deiving style and steering angle trace through the curves. The more you let the car do her thing and the less you wrestle her the less tyre wear you will get. There is a performance driving school whoch teaches its pupils to drive very fast around their track using only one finger to steer the car :). Do however keep both hands on the wheel ;):). Point is the less steering input the better and do not get hang up on going through corners as fast as possible, this destroys tyres and you will actually be going slow :).

In short, that sounds like a good idea.

Do you guys take out trackday insurance for this ?

Some do as they get nervous, but I never have.

How Fast is one of the safest track days you can do.

At the end of the day, it's up to you.

In an almost stock car you'd have to drive like a complete moron to stick it in the only barrier around, most of the circuit is surrounded by acres of grass.
