Towards Stage 2

Featured Replies

So, I would anyway write a review on the upcoming TMG stage 2 map I should be getting soon-ish so might as well start the work already.

The story basically picks up from last summer's mods (details here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/325403-tmg-stage-1-couple-of-mods-looong-review/),

it's been a really relaxed winter but the 2015 modding season :p  has started off dynamically. Last weekend a diverter valve upgrade from GFB went on

together with the Powerflex lower engine mount (no pics of that, I was too busy swearing throughout the installation process :envy: )

and today I received some pics from the exhaust shop of a few parts that are going to be shipped soon:

TBE with full 2.76" pipework from the downpipe to the rear silencer (instead of 2.76" dp on to 2.5" from Jettex and other solutions),

middle box and 200 cpsi catalyst on as I want to keep the noise to a minimum. Twin tips are also 2.76" which should be a nice but discreet upgrade to stock ones.

I think it looks fine, maybe a bit more attention to detail could have been applied on the welding of the exhaust tips but for 550£ + shipping I don't think I should complain too much.

Exhaust splitter was replaced with a much neatter option (1st photo)

To be continued...

Beautiful. Lovely, envy.

Just while you are there,

What octane of fuel you able to run the car with,

and how much is it costing at present.

Lovely looking exhaust....

But where's the fun in that?

These motors sound pretty amazing when freed up a little.....

I think the quality is good overall, but if I'm a bit picky, I would like a bit more precision on the welding of the Y, mostly for aesthetic purposes rather than functional I guess. Here's a close-up on it:

Exclusively on Shell V-Power 98+ as they label it. It's actually rather cheap, have to check in order to give the exact price but cheaper than UK and most of Europe I think.

Sorry mate, I just hate noisy exhaust systems and wouldn't want to risk it by ordering one without a middle box. I think as it is it will already be louder but still bearable. From what I'd read, similar systems without a middle box started really to p*** you off on highway travel around 80 mph and didn't want that. I find it ridiculous when a heavy "vruuuum" is being heard from miles, and then you turn your head and see a... well, a car that is not really supposed to sound like this. Maybe that sounds strange to some but I just fail to see the point

Update already then: After i expressed my slight dislike for the Y/splitter/whateveryoucallit we will be going for this instead:

Much better i think

never seen a exhaust tip in this location , usualy one of the tip is free flowing and the other just does its job . cant wait to hear a soundfile .

I think it will be quit noisy when i look at the size of the resonators .

you got TÜV / MOT over at you newbie ?

Sorry couldn't edit the previous post as I was out and that link was temporary. So the final exhaust tips part will be like this:

Which one you refer to Mark, the first one or the latest?

There certainly is a MOT afaik.

I am puzzled as to why it is deemed sensible to use a "Y" shaped adapter to split a single pipe into two outlets? Why divert and disrupt the flow unnecessarily? Why complicate the pipework - as seen in the God-awful welded joint above?

If the engine was a "V" configuration with a separate exhaust route for each bank I could understand twin outlets (typically one per side). If one wanted gradually and in a controlled way to manage the gas expansion I could understand a trumpet shape. If it were some cunning blown diffuser strategy it might - just possibly - make sense. But splitting a single pipe into two outlet pipes just seems like pointless bling.

Nail on head,, so true.

Style over function in that example.

Are you both talking about the sample on the first set of pictures? I personally like the later much more.

Btw George: Shell v-power 98+ here is at 1.080 GBP per liter, work out the gallon conversion, thought it was cheap?

Edited by newbie69

Personally I am referring to the general preoccupation with twin exhaust outlets. They seem to me to be pointless bling and possibly actually to impact negatively on performance / efficiency. I would be very interested in reading a technical justification.

As to Georges's apparent agreement with my point of view, I am getting worried now - hopefully it is just because Spring is in the air? ;)

The thing is the car is Stage 1 & going to Stage 2 & the Tail Pipe will not make the slightest of difference but look good to those behind,

so really all that matters is what the owner likes, and its nobody else's concern.

Spring Equinox.

& Lovely sunny weather for taking a drive in a Twincharger with the windows open, that is if you have one.

Exhaust is ready, a snapshot of the actual thing, looks so much neater than the first  sample, very happy:

final%20tips_zps5feq6fnp.jpg

And while waiting for all that, I bought myself a compression tester set to make sure there's nothing

alarming going on inside the cylinders before pushing some more power:

IMG_20150329_152832_zpsyj9pi81w.jpg

I've got one question though, I was reading the Skoda instructions that states before you proceed you have to remove a fuse

so as to: "interrupt the voltage supply of the injection valves and ignition coils"

Ok it's just a fuse but I know in many cases, unless it's a repair of something broken, the official instructions are a bit of an overkill

so was wondering how necessary is that? I thought you just remove all plugs, mount the compression tester, and then operate

the starter until the gauge stops rising (couple of seconds I guess) for each cylinder. I think I saw somewhere Jabo mentioning about

this process but can't find it now.

the engine would start pumping fuel into the cylinders with no ignition

^^^ yes, could be dangerous, and you'd be flooding it, plus I wouldn't want all that electricitiy flying around under there while I was working... I'd remove the fuse ;)

**awaits results! fingers crossed!

Don't worry Sharky! I'm always double and triple checking when doing this for the first time. I'll be contacting my tuner as well before I proceed.  ;)

Can anybody do me a favor and measure by how much the stock exhaust tips protrude out of the rear bumper pls? And I will pay it off with a nice vid...  :p

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Author

Nevermind, I'll give you the video anyway  :p   so here's a comparison between stock and new exhaust:

(switch to 720p or even 1080p for better sound)

And a bit of shiny stuff:

There's been a mistake on the rear part which is a bit too long, (the goods of a custom exhaust on a car that's 2500KM away from the exhaust maker I guess... )  but that is being corrected as we speak. Despite the 200 cpsi cat and the two silencers (well, not proper silencers, just a big empty pipe) there is a noticeable increase in the exhaust noise which for the most part I like, the DSG farting on full throttle gear changes (0:32 in the video) is exhilarating...  My only dislike was the slight buzz when coasting in 7th gear ~3000 rpm on the highway and you suddenly semi-plant your food. So in the end I went for a new rear silencer, semi-free type as opposed to the fully free current one, which should bring the noise to the right levels for me. All under way and I will be left with a spare fully free flowing rear silencer which will be going up for sale soon.

Nice.

The rear part was maybe made based on the Estates dimensions.

  • Author

Maybe. It will be going up for sale soon in the car parts section at a really attracting price imho. How do you find the sound George?

I might be intrested if it doesn't need any modification to fit the estate..

Sorry i had not listened to the noise, i just liked the look and the clean underside of the car.

Noise not to my taste really, i like stealth & no more noise that is absolutely necessary.

So where is your exhaust maker? If they are 2500kms away?

Sure, check the ad and let me know, I have attached a detailed pic of how far out it is so you can understand exactly.

I know what you mean and I am also of this belief. As I understood eventually after discussing with my exhaust maker, most people do like this type of increase (if not more) and to be honest, if it wasn't for the highway semi-full throttle thing I would have kept it. The extra idle bass and especially the DSG popps on full throttle are great and not excessive (in the video everything is a bit amplified due to the position of the mic).

So where is your exhaust maker? If they are 2500kms away?

Athens, Greece. 2800km actually from where I am at the moment!

UPDATE: Ad is up for anybody interested, price is negotiable (although it's practically a brand new part)
