Has anyone installed amp/sub and front components into a MK3 yet - looking for some advice

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I pick up my VRS TDI tomorrow, pretty much fully loaded ex managers car with 1500 miles on the clock and I part with my MK2 VRS

In my MK2 I had an Alpine double din head unit, decent components and a good quality 6 channel amp and sub that I have had in my last few cars.

I have removed the head unit and sold it and I am leaving the components in the old car as I didn't keep the OM speakers(they were knackered anyway)

So I have a decent amp and sub that I want to install into the new car, I also want to upgrade the front components and maybe replace and amp the rears too.

Now I am starting to think this may not be as easy as simply powering the amp, connecting it to the head unit and then running phono leads to the speakers in front and back

So if anyone has done this, how easy is it?   Do you need anything special to connect an amp to the head unit (is it even possible with the stock head unit?   How easy is it to get into everything?   I dont think I have the Canton upgrade thing, I didn't know it existed until I read about it on here but im guessing the dealer would have mentioned it if it was there )

As for the components - anyone know what size fits in the front doors and if they go straight in or if you need to make MDF mounts ect?   Are there tweeter mounts?

I have a mate who is a decent engineer and also a dab hand at car stereos but he has not done a new skoda before and neither of us are sure how easy the manufacturer has made it to add a sub and amp.   It always used to be a case of just swapping in a new head unit that you knew what you were working with but that is obviously now a bit different with the control systems on modern cars.

Car in question - very excited now!  The interior is really stunning in the flesh

Yeah had my last car off them too - pretty happy with the deals I have had so far

I went down there for a quote on a new one. I pick up my new car from Sparshatts in Southampton tomorrow ;)

"Pretty much fully loaded" - does that include the Canton system? Because then I wouldn't bother doing anything but upgrading/replacing the sub (and add it's own amp if need be).

I was not aware of the Canton system upgrade until I started reading on here, but as the dealer did not mention it I very much doubt it has it.

That might already have the Canton upgrade, if you look at your interior photo which is not brilliant quality, at the A pillar it might just be the end of the Canton badge which sits on the speaker in the corner of the door's leading edge.

Interior photo is not the exact car - I only took one of the outside.   Inside image is borrowed off google.   I have just checked the spec list from the original advert and it does not mention Canton

As an ex managers car I would be very surprised if it did not have canton.

Silly me thinking the picture referred to your actual stunning interior! Hopefully you'll have the upgrade. I have the same interior and it is good. Enjoy your new car.

You should be able to take speaker level inputs to an amp, from the back of the head unit in the glove box. I think the speakers are 6.5" but not sure, and I think you'll need mounts but again not sure as I've not done it. There was a thread a week or 2 back from someone that upgraded their canton system with new amp and speakers. Sparse on fitting details though as they had got it all done professionally.

Do you know how much juice the canton amp sends to the subwoofer?

The official figures are 2x100W to the sub,

Check the centre picture in post 4 of this thread for the full details. The canton amp contains a filter so each speaker output is limited in frequency range to the specific speaker.

But the question is, is that "real" or just the commercial way of inflating the numbers?

If its the real deal, it should be possible to get some better woofers and just hook them to the amp.

Neil, the post :- http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/348230-major-sound-system-upgrade/ was sparse on details as the OP ain't a technical guy, software specialist if IIRC but, there's enough info to lead you to believe its not quite as straight foreward as it would have been in the past.

Indeed. Although seems recombination of canton component outputs and amplification, was much of his issue.  Others have taken speaker outputs from bolero and fed under seat active sub's with out issue hence I suspect bolero>speaker output>multi channel amp>new speakers should also be technically straightforward too.

picked up the car now and it definitely doesnt have Canton.   Im kind of pleased about that as I suspect it would have been harder to replace and I am used to something a bit more meaty than what the Canton seems to deliver.   I can not find a single thread on the net with infomation from other people who have fitted a sub/amp/speaker combo so looks like it will be trial and error..... I will make sure I get some photos and do a wirte up as I suspect others will want to do this.  The standard system is awful, but the rest of the car is very nice

Hope you enjoy the car!

A write up of your fit would be wonderful.

I'm going to take my car to my local audio specialist to see what they recommend.  I'll be interested to see how you get on.

Someone else recently had an install done on their VRS by these guys in Reading , might be worth popping over

Hi,

It would be amazing if you could let me know what they say.   Especially if they give you a clear indication of how they would connect up an amp to the factory head unit and how easy this is.    Anything you find out would help me make a plan.

I had my last two installs done professionally by a local specialist with a very good rep but I am far from happy with some of the bodges I found when removing my old system this time around.   I am tempted to do a similar thing, take the car to my normal specialist and gleam some info on how the install would work - then attempt it with my friend if straight forward, or take it to another specialist if its going to be very complicated.

Thanks for the link to the guys in reading - may well be worth me talking to them.

Essentially I would like to do it myself to save money and have the experience of doing it myself.   I suspect I will attemp it with my friend and will definitely create a 'how to guide' while we are doing it.

Well, i live near Manchester so i wont be going to reading. Also, i wont be spending 2k on it. It's a lease car after all.. Haha... I Just want a reasonable improvement

Yeah, I realise you are not taking it to that place in Reading yourself,  I just meant that who ever you take it to is likely to say "thats easy, we just power the amp, connect it to the headunit and wire up the speakers to the amp"   or they are going to say "ummm thats going to be a bitch, you need this and that adapter and its a tricky job".   Would just be useful to hear any feedback they give you.

I wont be spending 2k either.... I already have sub and amp.   I am planning on simply buying a decent set of componants for a couple of hundred quid and some cheap rear speakers - then connecting it up with a sub and my 6 channel amp.

The unknown bit is if Skoda have thought about this and made it easy to connect an amp to the standard head unit.   It would be lunacy if they havnt considering many people will want to do this and you now cant really remove the factory system, nor would you want to.

Hi,

Well, how this story ends?

Have you managed to do what you intended?

I would like to put something nice into this great car, something maybe from Focal like:

http://www.carsoundsandsecurity.co.uk/store/165krx3/

But i am not sure will it fit , and will i be able to connect it to the head etc.
