What about the things that annoy you?

Featured Replies

It's a completely stupid thing but I get really annoyed with the door mirrors unfolding when I've just unlocked the car to get something I left on the back seat and re-folding themselves when I lock it again.  If I could I'd programme them not to unfold until I start the engine but as far as I can see that isn't an option. (If anybody knows otherwise I'll be very happy to be corrected)

They didn't used to do that. My 63 plate Octavia Elegance unfolded them when you selected the ignition on, whereas my 64 plate unfolds when the car unlocks.

  • There are very good reasons for driving on the left   1.Your sword arm always faces the oncoming traffic 2.Your horse-whip does not snag in the hedges 3.You do not end up walking in the gutter whe

  • Seriously people, just start driving on the right side of the road so manufacturers won't have to bother with trivial stuff like that anymore!

  • There is a persistent squeaky noise coming from the front passenger seat.       (I keep telling her to shut up but she won't................ )

Yes the door mirror controllers were changed sometime during the MY14 run....a colleague here has a 63 plate Elegance and his unfold with ignition on, mine being a slightly later car unfold on unlock.

The way around it of course is to either turn off the auto fold on lock, so folding only works off of the mirror controller, or alternatively just fold the mirrors manually before exiting the car and they then wont unfold until you are in the vehicle have turned the mirror knob and have switched on the ignition.

I am not entirely sure why they changed the controllers and altered the behaviour....perhaps it can be tweaked with VCDS?

Overall very happy with the car (vRS TDI estate MY15).

My only really big annoyance and disappointment is the dreadful sound quality from the standard Bolero setup when playing from SD, CDs or Bluetooth - there's a whole thread on this so I won't say more here.

Minor irritations are:

  • The lack of gas struts for the bonnet (but I only ever open it to top up the washer so it's not a big deal)
  • Bonnet release on the wrong side (but again as above not a big deal)
  • No way (other than VCDS) to disable stop/start permanently - not just for one journey
  • No reversing camera (I know it's now available but wasn't when I ordered mine)
  • A very slight feeling - as a previous long-time VW driver - that some of the interior materials on seats, dash etc., aren't quite as high quality as I'm used to

But again - apart from the sound quality - I'm extremely happy with my car.

If vehicle manufacturers were asked to compile a list of "What about the things that annoy you?", then "countries that insist on driving on the left" would be quite close to the top

I'm sure that's true but of course we're not the small minority that some people in drive-on-the-right countries think.  It's not just the UK and Ireland - there's India, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and quite a lot of southern Africa.  According to http://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/driving-on-the-left/ about 35% of the world's population drive on the left.  We are a minority but a big one.

But I agree, it must be a real pain for manufacturers to have to cater for both and it does sometimes mean that interesting cards just aren't available in the UK or, if they are, they're only in RHD - for example, the original Golf GTi, which was only available in LHD here until 1979.

Or the Integrale :p

That's a crazy day! I try to put several visits together and make it a 2 day tour if I'm going far from home, but once when the missus was very pregnant and I'd decided to rule out staying away I did a 560 mile round trip for a 90 minute meeting, and when I got home I declared "Never again!".

Turned out when she did drop that 4 hours to get home wouldn't have got me back in time anyway!

yes in a perfect world we all would do that but sadly its not always possible,

Do all the diesel rs miss out on the driving mode selector? I don't have one and I'm trying to work out if it was supposed to be there or if the diesels miss out.

Diesels also get it. But later in 2014 builds got them. Earlier ones didnt have it yet.

Crap! Is there a way to retrofit it?

They always have had it, just that its not got VRS stamped on the button. At least mine has and it was registered March 2014.

Uk vRS get driver mode selection....all models SE and above with exception of 1.2 TSI's have it I believe. Early launch vRS cars (build specifically for supply to dealers as demonstrators) generally lacked much spec over standard...some had black pack and sunset glass but they all pretty much came on pictoris wheels and didnt have the sound generator either.

Honestly youre not missing much without DMS though, if my 150 TDI is anything to go by then normal throttle is the best.

It does help being able to put the steering into sport though as on regular Octavias normal is a bit light. I am sure its way less of an issue on the vRS with its more focused progressive steering rack.

But then if someone were to ask them to list their biggest markets in order, which would come out on top? Driving on the left, or driving on the right?

Take into account most manufacturers have a dedicated factory in china for the chinese market, ive a funny feeling what it would be.

My minor annoyance comes when I unlock the doors the alarm beeps twice - fine. But then if I use the key to unlock the boot, it beeps twice again. Do they all do this? I know I can disable the audible beeps but it's either on or off, no options. Is there a VCDS change to solve this? It's the small things......

True but I actually like the automatic (un)folding, just not every time I unlock the car!

Mine don't unfold until I switch the ignition key round to position 1. Wonder why yours is different. As mine is different to yours, then perhaps there is a way of changing it.

Mine also unfolds when I unlock the car.

It would be nice to have them unfold with the ignition at 1, as your car does.

Yeah looks like its been changed recently. Rediculous. Talk about changing the car for the worse part way through. Stupid.

Now I don't agree, I am used to mirrors flying in/ out when locking/unlocking the car as that's how the Freelander dies it.

It's useful as you know if the car is locked/unlocked

I dont mind the Mirrors Folding when I lock the car. But its a bit silly that they unfold if Im just unlocking the car get something.

Its no biggie, just silly :)

+1   (from a distance when you think you have forgotten to lock it)

All I do is press the lock button again to make sure. Although most of the time I am locking it after having driven it, so the mirrors will tell me if its locked or not anyway.

<OT>

I avoid to spec them since it happens to me to park in very tight spaces, at a few cm far from a wall.

I hated the possibility to see the mirrors crashing into the wall, while automatically folding or unfolding

The thing most annoying me is the softness (above all along quick bends) and height of Elegance suspensions.

Mercs unfold when you open the door. Need to check if it's the front only or any door.

  • 2 weeks later...

Water spilling out of the doors after a downpour is really annoying. Schoolboy error design fault.

I have the same problem...thought I'd mention it on cars first service 2 weeks ago...service guys immediate response "it's supposed to do that!" Just so happened that Skoda UK posted up a similar thread on Facebook so I left a sarcastic comment about the free shoe wash...Skoda got in touch and phoned me to get the issue resolved, Visit to dealers yesterday armed with video of it spewing water everywhere, car is now booked in and new parts on order.

Whats the solution to this?

There was a drizzle the other day, and water gathered in the door. Only my catlike reflexes saved me from wet shoes. :p

Dealer ordered new seals..will give update after 19th when they've been fitted.
