Anyone noticed... ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Has any owner of MK3 noticed that in the rain, at approximatly 100km/h, watter blocks their view on the side mirror like on the picture bellow?

This is from my car and it's left side driven.

Best regards,

New one on me, driving on the M25 quite a bit I use my mirrors an awful lot (there's some appalling driving out there) and have never noticed that.

I think it's because of the shape of the mirror and the vortex between the mirror and the door. The wipers also push water towards that side of the screen. We had this problem on the Wife's ex Fabia MKII Vrs. We fitted wind deflectors and this altered the air flow and solved the problem.

It only seems to happen on the drivers side.

The mk2 fabia suffered from this, when my mrs had one we tried the skoda wind deflectors, which helped a bit till they fell off, I dont think the mk3 octy is as bad as the fabia, but overall I think the mirrors on the mk3 octy are crap compared to the ones on the mk2 octy

Rain-X on the side windows, always done it, keep the glass completely clear.

Indeed - I would apply some "rain-x" style repellent and see how it improves things....

Same here.

Or slow down in bad weather :-0 :-0

This is not bad weather, only rain.

Had a Audi A3 (2013 model) did the same. Rendered the mirrors useless.

The shape of the mirror isn't exactly the best IMHO, given the huge amount of noise generated at highways speeds. Design isn't a valid excuse for bad aerodynamics.

Yes I agree x-rain would probably remedy the situation but it would not solve the problem. I did not buy a car for 22k € so I can apply x-rain to it. I could do that to my prevous MK1. Oh I didn't have to because it did not spill water to my side window. Even if it was raining cats and dogs.

Slowing down is also a option but why should I? If the car would have been designed as it should then we wouldn't have this debate and I could drive as I feel I can in the rain. Of course in legal limits.

Then you have 3 choices:

1. Live with it.

2. Make use of the suggested fix.

3. Try to reject the car due to badly designed mirrors.

I suspect it's not the only thing you'll find that doesn't work how you want it too.

I'll give it a shot with #3 and see what happens.

I was just wondering how many of you MK3 users have this problem?

Never seen it.

I have seen the water spinning in this location, but it did not block mirrors. Could be related to wind direction

The OP is seriously going to try and reject the car here?

It's annoying yes but so is a door sill full of water emptying over your shoes after a rain shower, or, parts breaking within the first few months, or, rear centre headrests unable to adjust, or...the list could be endless.

Advice here is to lower your expectations. I have :-)

I found that my passenger door did try to soak my foot the other week, but since then it's not happened again oddly.

cHeaper and better value than the sidewindow deflectors, bonus is rainx works

I do wonder what the design aim of the mirrors was. They've got bad aerodynamics and they don't even give a good rear view. They seem to be pretty hopeless all round.

I don't want to reject my car. I like it. I just want it to be fixed.

RainX and sidewindow deflectors are not a fix for me.

It's like ordering a refrigerator and then when heatwave hits, it's not working. You say to yourself, OK it's broken.

You take it to be repaired and they say there is nothing wrong with it's designed to cool up to 22°C room temperature. And you go WTF?

Yes you need a room temperature below 22°C for refrigerator to work. Would you say OK and buy a nice air conditioner for that refrigerator

or would you blow up in the guys face and demand it to be repaired or replaced?

Ok I exaggerated a bit but I hope you get my point.

The only thing I would agree is something like this. The black rubber on the A pillar.

I think the issue is like many manufactures is Econ/Green vs design/cost. Manufactures are under increasing pressure to make the cars more efficient, you cant help but wonder that somewhere there has to give, maybe this is one on them?

Not suggesting it is nor am I say it's right, just suggesting a reason.
