Smartlink Unlocking/Activation option

Featured Replies

I think we will all find that more and more electronic type features will be installed at build but enabled via a code (and purchase) on delivery or later. It's cheaper to build cars like that.

This has been the case for a long time which is why many features can be enabled via VCDS.

Presumably car companies will catch-up with the smart phone industry & start to offer "In-Car" purchases to enable cornering fog lights or enhanced-EQ on  head unit after purchase for a more direct revenue stream (cut out the dealerships).

This is one of the reasons most dealerships cant activate extra features after build (even though its technically possible).

  • I asked the same question to Skoda CZ, as the Skoda NO seems as confused as Skoda UK regarding SmartLink.  Here is their answer:   Dear Mr. Kristiansen if you ordered 2016 Octavia with MIB 2 inside

I had an Amundsen+ in my Yeti - I had SatNav.

I read the options and obviously assumed Mirrorlink was included in the package I ordered.  I also assumed I'd get a CD player capable of playing MP3 CDs.

Obviously I was wrong, however even the dealer is unsure because this is the first batch MY16 vehicles to arrive with them.

Probably a bit naive to think you would get smartlink for free, when it says it’s a paid for option, you could just pay the £150 to get it activated?

Interestingly SUK told me that I couldn't do this despite the infotainment saying I could.

I await with interest the VCDS fix...

Previously the bolero had no sat Nav, then they added amundsen, now they still provide amundsen but you get a bigger screen. The withdrawal of cd was discussed a few months back in the yeti forum.

But nowhere was it ever suggested that they would make smart link free.

why would vcds with their known stance against piracy enable us to avoid paying a software licence?

How is it different from their software allowing the enablement of chargeable optional extras?

Besides - as SUK say I can't purchase it, unlocking via VCDS would not be depriving them of money.

This kind of thing is not activated in the same way, I imagine it would be unlocked by the central skoda system that controls the component protection, did skoda give a reason it couldn't be anabled on your car?

It is a licence key or SWaP code that is loaded to the infotainment unit via ODIS. VCDS will not be able to do this.

Nope, no reason.

If I'm honest, I suspect they are incorrect and going off MY15 info.

So you have a My16 car?

if you enable say cornering fogs you are enabling a chargeable option but you're not bypassing a software licence. I just know Ross Tech are very very anti piracy so I just don't seem them assiting people to in effect bypass the licencing of android auto, apple car play etc. Imagine them taking on Apple or Google? No I wouldn't if I were them

Nope, no reason.

I'll have a 'chat' with one of my contacts :)

I have received an update from the dealer.

Basically, at the moment, enabling Smartlink is a factory option only.  It may become a dealer option in the future, but due to licensing issues with Apple and Google, there will be a cost attached.

Fair enough, I can live with that, but does this mean I have a completely useless USB socket taking up space under my head unit?

So all the cars made from ww23 with Smartlink installed cannot be used unless the Skoda dealer taking the order specified the activation code on the order system.

The fact that most dealers werent aware of the activation code means that no car built will have a working Smartlink.

No, you can use the Bluetooth as per normal. Not sure about the USB. Dealers should have been aware as it was showing in the configurator on the web and on their system

Bluetooth works fine but it was the dealer who got me so excited about what you could do with SmartLink in the first place ... and now it doesn't.

When did it become an option to order? I ordered beginning of June and went for Smart Link and Smart Gate.

it's a MY16 option, I ordered it on 8th May, so it would have been available from week 22

I ordered smartlink mid May. Waiting delivery end of July - August :(

No, the USB socket has always been there, long before Smarlink even became an option. You can use it for its original purpose of playing music off a memory stick or phone or for charging a phone.

Several people, including Iamholam and me, got Smartlink added in May onto orders that were placed in April. It was listed as an option on the configurator and in the brochure from early May.

Did you and Iamholm get your car yet....and has Smartlunk been activated from factory?

I requested Smartlink and was told it was standard on Irish MY16 builds. Now Im woŕried that Smartlink may be fitted to all MY16 cars.....but not activted.

Im quite sure Ive read that someone on this forum had been in contact with Skoda in Czech and they said it could be enabled on all mib2 cars. Dont remember wich thread I read it in tho.

No, but it was added onto the orders, with a price increase, before the cars were built.

The UK brochure claims that it's optional on all UK models, but apparently it's standard on the Columbus. I think at least one person has reported here receiving a UK car with Smartlink enabled.

Gentlemen, could someone be kind enough and explain once and forever what exactly is qualified as MIB I and MIB II?

My O3 with Columbus was delivered at the beginning of November 2014 and now I'm really interested in finding out whether activating/retrofitting SmartLink is achievable in any possible way...
