Hi all, can anyone help please? I am new on here and a first time Skoda owner, I have just purchased a Roomster on a 58 plate. I am very happy with this quirky looking car but I have an issue with the headlights. I have owned it for about 4 weeks but have only just had to do some night driving. I find the headlights all but useless especially with oncoming traffic on country roads. Is this a common problem for people (I haven't read anything so far) my question is, is there an upgrade for the headlights and if so could you point me in the right direction please. Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. The type of headlights you can determine your best course of action.

Can you tell us whether yours are projector style or reflector type?

Thanks for the reply's, they are projector style headlamps which I believe uses H7 headlight bulbs?

Usually if you go on a headlight website that sells bulbs (like hids-direcr.com) you can enter your numberplate and it'll say what bulbs you'll need

The headlamp beam can be raised or lowered by the control dial on the dash. Check it is in the 0 position as the previous owner might have lowered the beam if he was carrying a load to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers

If they are projector lights using one bulb and a 'shutter' for main beam, then I would highly recommend a £30 set of HID's for much improved output and beam pattern.

Yes double checked the dash adjuster for beam and thats ok, I have decided swapping bulbs over for a set of Philips X Treme +130, how does that sound?. Thanks to all who have replied so far.

Your call. I got through any number of different performance bulbs, even 100w ones and only the HIDs improved things sufficiently.

If you seek an 'independent' verification so to speak. Send Slotty a message on here. I fitted HIDs to his Fabia MK2 after him having much the same journey as I.

The swear filter prevents me from typing his reaction, suffice to say he was pleased with the results

Be careful fitting higher wattage bulbs

Hids are the only decent upgrade especially if you have the de modules (would not advise if you don't)

But the difference is amazing on xenon over halogen

Andy, welcome to the forum. I fitted Philips Extreme soon after picking up 'Derrick' (Diesel, get it?). I do a lot of country driving and have found them more than adequate. Hyphons has given the website I used. Be aware that the bulbs can be a bit fiddly to change but not impossible. Follow the manufacturer's warnings about touching the lens surface, otherwise enjoy the drive.

Projector style headlamps are with two H7 bulbs.

They do look like this:

They were optional in Finland and as I heard, they're not available with right hand steering.

I don't have tested standard lights but these are kinda decent.

Hi Andy, I've so far gone through the "plus 100%" and now on the "plus 130%" H7 bulbs, also got the appropriate white-light LED front sidelight bulbs (they have resistors that mean they consume same current as originals, so don't throw up error codes.)

And LED rear numberplate bulbs and interior bulbs, transforms from "dingy pub" to "operating theatre", great for map-reading at night (when stationary!) Just the bootlight still to do in LED.

As to whether you find the light output sufficient for your eyesight and driving style, only you can judge.

Welcome to Briskoda BTW, I can recommend FREEDOM membership, it helps to keep the site running well!

PS Almost all the exterior bulbs were from Powerbulbs, based on the far side of Wakey from me.

I've heard of people complaining about the headlamps before. I've defo got the projector lamps in my SE but I really haven't found a problem, being on the wrong side of 40 I've not got to have brighter lights for doing any jobs blah blah but not had a problem with the Roomsters lights even on dark country roads.

This said I'd love to see the difference of HIDs in the Roomster lamp units. Just got some Night Breakers for another vehicle that I own but it's not yet on the road but looking forward to seeing those as the lamps on that car really are poor.

I can totally endorse Barrie's comments re the HID's I had standard bulbs in my MK1 Octy and wasn't over impressed compared to a Mk1 Fabia, went up to Osram night breakers and deffo noticed an improvement, however switching to 35W HID's was highly illuminating! When I got my 11 plate Roomster I was appalled at how poor the lights were. In the wet I literally couldn't see the kerb of roundabouts etc. I immediately switched to Philips Extreme Vision which made NO PERCEIVABLE DIFFERENCE! Unfortunately although they're switched on via VCDS the static cornering lights won't work so I sometimes turn the front fog lights on just to illuminate a kerb at a junction. As the darker nights are nearly on us I will be fitting HID's very soon!!
