Fitted the new plates that arrived today to the Superb.

Today I acquired a driving companion:

We then went shopping and I managed to find an excellent parking space so I didn't get dented:

Oil change and vacuuming interior. Exciting times...

Changed the headlight bulbs to Philips extreme night vision (or whatever they're called) that claim to be 130% brighter than normal bulbs, after one of mine went again. Also changed the spark plugs from NGK to Denso and changed the ignition coils. May just be me but engine feels smoother and just better in general after, so pleased with that.

Drove my mk2 for the first time in 6 weeks, had to charge the battery up overnight first!

For a car that's coming up to 10 years old it still drives like new.

Gave it a good 3 hour clean, polish and wax. Black is definitely the best colour when clean!

Yesterday I had a puncture on the Octy repaired and then cleaned out the inside.

Today Mrs H has deemed the Fabia too small for her plus dog, Samuel and Elena plus the chariot thingy for Elena so I am going call Skoda and see about handing the Fabia back. We will either get a new petrol 1.4 Octy hatch or a used Mk2.

Had a similar quandry re swmbo citigo last yr when Spud arrived. The travel system wheely bit only fit with rear seat folded down.. but it wouldnt fit in a furby either! Or a corsa, micra, yaris, polo, ibiza, clio, i10/i20.. it was tight in a fiesta and just slotted into a 208... we got a new travel stroller instead - MB Nano - which folds down to fit in aircraft over head lockers :) cheaper than a new car!

Also, FWIW if your into ERF car seats when they go to stage 2, Axkid Minikid will fit in the citigo, with passenger seat slid forward the same amount as it does in the Octy...

I put the car in for an MOT and it passed with no problems.

Gave the barge a wash then finished with Sonax BSD and gave the seats a clean with the Dr Leather wipes seeing as it's going to a posh wedding tomorrow. :)

not tonight but late last night in the dark I gave it a load of oil after my wife advised me the warning light had come on...

Got home and noticed the mileage

Bit of a panic yesterday when the brake pad warning light came on.

Ordered some discs and pads to collect, just in case. Bit of investigation this morning and I found the pad sensor wires had snapped. Joined the bare ends together and liberally applied some insulating tape and all sorted.

Plenty of life left in the pads and discs.

Also put my summer tyres back on freshly shod with a new set of uniroyal rainexperts. Seem very quiet compared to the cheapo old summer tyres.

  • 2 weeks later...

Started peeling into this...

KtP7gLc.jpg

Mmmmm, crusty. The damage turned out to be really only confined to the very lower inch or so of that wheel arch.

smccFrH.jpg

Except, since I had the carpet peeled back in the boot so I could check for burning and whatnot; I spotted a little patch of seam-sealer that had started flaking back and showed a nice big rust blister. So I hit it with the wire wheel...

NhrYI9F.jpg

Uhoh.

And, by the time I'd gotten it wire-brushed back to actual metal on all sides...

CqLUhw8.jpg

The worst part of it is, it was completely hidden on the outside by the undercoating; and the only sign of it being there was the lifting of the seam-sealer, behind the boot carpet. :x

It does perhaps explain the clunking, though.

Some weldage occurred...

ZmuY0eX.jpg

And a brace, just to make sure. (Yes, the weld looks nasty. I had to build it up out of a few thousand very very gentle tacks; even resorting to using over an inch of stick-out on the MIG torch like a stick electrode to try reduce the power even more, because the machine was just blasting right through all the sheet metal even on its lowest setting.

It's strong, though. 3mm sheet all round.

And the wheel-arch...

KBy0QyZ.jpg

Ugly, but solid. Yet more 3mm sheet. It's the thinnest I had access to. I hate sheet-metal work; don't really have access to machines gentle enough to weld it without just vapourising it.

Fitting this weekend!

Changed my factory fitted H4 headlight bulbs back to Osram Nightbreaker Ultimate, as the first generation Nightbreakers went off after two and a half years so factory fitted bulbs came back until today, changed the cabin filter and used a disinfectant spray. Now smells great and finally we can drive safely at Greek dark roads.

Great improvement, even compared to first generation Nightbrakers.

Maxidot cluster has just arrived. Hopefully fitting that soon, too.

Tightened up the loose bolts on the steering rack, and changed the pooched wheel-bearing that she failed on. Both items were last touched by a Halfords Autocentre; guess where I won't be going back to. (Honestly, I didn't even want to end up there in the first place.)

The wheel bearing was screwed because the nut was barely even up against the washer on the back of the bearing. No, seriously. I pulled the split pin out, took the little locking retainer thing off, and then was able to move the nut with no effort whatsoever, with my fingers.

The 5Nm that The Manual gives as a final finishing torque might not be a lot, but it's a lot more than the not-even-finger-tight they got it to. Booked back in for a re-test on Monday.

Yesterday the Superb had it's MOT and sailed through... :)

Washed it. 10 minutes is all it took.

VCDS and activated Hill Hold and XDS

Well happy now.... :D
