Bridgestone's the new Continental?

Featured Replies

Morning!

I was at RRG this week to get the vRS fixed, and I noticed that all of the new Octavia vRS's for sale have Bridgestone's on instead of Continentals. I only saw the 18" wheels, none of them had the 19's so I don't know about them. I asked the service bloke and he wasn't too sure why they'd changed, but thought it likely be related strongly to cost/better deal etc.

However, I'm curious, have any of you fine people bought a new Octavia vRS recently with Bridgestone tyres? If so, how are they? I'll be looking for 4 new tyres soon and haven't really heard anything about Bridgestones, so peoples opinions on them would be welcome.

VW fit all the 18" shod GTI/GTD/GTE/R Golfs with Potenza S001's....maybe theyve gotten a good bulk deal or have some loose agreement with Bridgestone that they have extended to Skoda?

There's bridgestones on mine.picked it up back in April and I don't mind them they've been good over the conditions we've had. Just need to see what there like cold weatherwise now

Decent grip and cheap at £99 a tyre, but noisy, very noisy.

That would be an instant deal breaker for me tbh. I have Conti Sport Contact 2's at the minute and find them to be really noisy, are the Bridgestones even worse?

nothing new, they change periodically, my 2008 Octavia came with Bridgestone Potenzas

My L&K came with Bridgestones on 18s a year ago.

Leon Cupras came with Bridgestone Potenza and they were slated by almost everyone in the wet. My Cupra has Continentals and they seem pretty good so far.

How did you find them andyvee? Mainly in terms of noise, dry and wet grip, and steering feel?

Noisy and not good in the wet. But I don't really rate Conti SC2s either. SC5s were pretty good, but wore quickly.

Cant wait to replace them with Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's, but the winters will be going on at the end of the month so it will be a while before I wear them out.

My old Astra had Bridgestone tyres R050 potenzas I think & to be honest, I thought they were Rubbish, in both dry & wet, that was on a standard size 17" alloy but when I upgraded to 18" alloys, I had falkens & rainsports 2 & 3, definitely much better I thought over the bridgestone's...

Even with having the vRS for only 3 months, I found the CSC 5 much better grip wise in dry or wet conditions.

Have a look here

I just purchased all-season tyres 4 of them.

Cheers BATVANVRS, i'll have a look at them, keep us posted on what they're like to drive :)

And I was (and still am) leaning a little more towards the Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's as there's so many people give them excellent reviews, and they've got good rim protection too.

Im not overly enamoured with the Potenzas on my Golf....previous one had Goodyear F1s on the front and was unshakeable in the dry and v good in the wet....doesnt feel so stable on the Bridgestones but they have only done 1400 miles so time yet.

Mine came with S001's on 18's.  Lot of tyre noise and they're pretty poor in the marginally damp, let alone wet.  Okay in the dry, but really that's it. Okay.

They're certainly nothing special and not the tyres for me.  But at the same time, they're not bad enough to chuck 'til I've had some mileage out of them.

I'll be replacing with F1's or PS3's, although I see Hankook's are getting quite good reviews.

Gaz

I've driven several hundred miles in a my vRS with the older Conti SCS2 tyres and my vRS came fitted with the Bridgestone last December.

My own opinion is that the Bridgestone is slightly better than the Conti. They're both loud but the Bridgestone seems to grip slightly better and feels more secure but has NO rim protection at all. I can't comment on wear rate.

Would I replace with the same? Not a chance - the transformation that my mk2 had when I put the GoodyearF1 on is more than enough to persuade me to go the same route again when it's time to renew them. Much better grip, feel and awesome in the wet.

If I didn't buy the Nokian tyres, my next choice would of been the Eagle F1 AS2s but for the £10-£15 per corner difference, I thought to go with the Nokian Weatherproof purely for the fact that it saves me a lot of bother & hassle of getting winter wheels & tyres changed over & winter is fast approaching! I will keep you updated with how I find them ;)

I had Goodyear Efficient grips (225/40/18's) on my Mk1 Octy VRS and was highly impressed, so will be going with those when the Bridgestones (not to impressed) are ready for replacement.

Just had a quick look on Blackcircles and they are £85 fitted, which after getting standard size rubber fitted (205-50-17) on the Mk1 is a bargain!

Have Goodyear F1`s on my car since 6,300 mls now done 17,100 mls. So much better than Continental Sport 2. Wouldn`t ever have Bridgestone`s as fitted to Leon Cupra. Went on a demo in Leon Cupra and broke traction from standing start from lights in dry, brisk take off only,

My experience of Conti SC2 is that all four needed replacing at 26k (after rotation), they tramlined and were noisy. But grip was OK in wet and dry.

Switched to hankook and they're a lot quieter, grip is the same and no tramlining.

I really like the Conti SC5, I do agree they wear fast but, I'd rather have tge grip than the longevity especially the way I drive.

I don't think so no.

I'd say the Bridgestones on mine are reasonably quiet, except for over naff road surfaces. But even then less bad than the SC2 I had on 17" on a previous car.

Mine came fitted with the Potenzas (2 weeks ago).  Not had a chance to try them in the rain yet but I think they are noisier than the Goodyear EGPs on my Mk2 FL vRS.  When they are due for replacement I will get Goodyear Eagle F1s.

Got 'em on mine. Only done 2.5K and they just about seem OK, if a bit noisy.

My biggest moan is the lack of traction when setting off from a start. Even in the normal mode the traction control light frequently comes on.

Cheers muchly guys

Don't think i'll be going anywhere near the Bridgestones, not really what i'm after from what you guys have said. Think it will almost certainly be the Goodyear Eagle F2's :)

I went from a VRS on CSC3 to a VRS on Bridgestones and found no noticeable change in noise. I must confess, neither were/are great in the wet but on German tarmac neither preformed badly, and in the summer both grip like bitches to the smooth surface of European highways. They do like hot weather as performance really improved the warmer it got. I had a right blast on the twistys going over the alps the long way on way from Innsbruck to Lake Garda, Italy. I think these tyres suit Southern Euro countries more than UK.

Additional comments, Rim protection on Continentals much better and they tramlined. Bridgestones gave considerably more (secure) feedback as the tyre walls are very stiff in comparison and possiby hurt the ride. They are massively affected by tyre pressures as well.

Performance in UK during a summer and two winters, they are both competent but I'd rate the Continental over the Bridgestone for grip. Neither liked cool weather as grip dropped off quickly and adding water made it worse.

For UK, I'd buy a different brand if buying new, but as they come fitted, I suggest a good long fast summer trip to Southern Europe and over the Alps to wear them out, neither will dissapoint. They are great tyres but not suited to the UK climate.

I don't think the manufacturer thought about the varied climates when they specced them. It would be interesting to know what our Scandinavian friends have fitted as standard.
