65 VRS lights terrible.

Featured Replies

Hi everybody.

I received my brand new Vrs in September, absolutely love everything about it apart from the headlights.

We had our first half decent drive in it this weekend over the Lecht in the dark, it handled beautifully but with the lights on dip we could only see 7 or 8 metres ahead of us. Useless on such a mountainous route.

The cornering lights work fine and the main beam is fantastic but the the light pattern doesn't change and there are no settings for AFS on the Amundsen infotainment system.

We're driving up to Wick (near John O Groats) this week before driving the 700 and odd miles to Portsmouth towards the end of the week so I'd like it sorted before we leave if it is an issue.

Thanks for any help.

I should probably add the lights were set to left hand traffic from the factory. I'm assuming this is correct meaning we are driving on the left and that it shouldn't be set to right hand traffic for a right hand Drive?

Just checked mine. Left hand driving. I'm in Manchester, so hope it's correct.

If you have Amundsen, it should change the lights to continental mode when you are abroad, and back again.

Did you have the light switch on AUTO? - AFS only works with the light switch in AUTO.

Also - what Drive Mode were you in? - Eco disables the swivel on cornering, and vRS (Sports) mode provides the most swivel.

It could be that they have not been adjusted correctly from the factory - try getting them checked at a MoT station or your dealer to make sure the base setting is correct. You can't manually adjust them, they have to be hooked up to the computer to adjust the height and aim.

mine are fine, impressive on full beam and ok on dipped they are fine.  maybe get them checked by the dealer, perhaps thy arent levelling correctly

Lights were on auto and driving mode was on normal. The lights seem to be permanently on city mode. Driving at 60 on dipped lights is terrible. I'll try and get it in to the dealers to see if it's disabled.

Looking through the manual there should be options in the settings menu.

I'll double check with next door when theyre in as well as they also have a vrs.

I'm pretty sure AFS doesn't work when switched for driving on the right

There are other posts about light brightness on mk3 Vrs, including from me compared to my mk2 L&K's with Zenons.

The lights on my Octavia MKIII Vrs ( 63 plate ) are Super Dooper. Well pleased with the xenons

I did try searching but most of them seemed to talk about the brightness. The brightness seems perfect it's just an extremely short range.

Should there be options in the setup menu to switch on and off AFS?

My Superb had this issue-the AFS was working, but the settings were too low and it was almost dangerous to drive down an unlit country lane even at slowish speeds-certainly the national speed limit was impossible. I had them raised by the selling dealer FOC and now they are excellent.,

Do the lights do their swivel on startup?

It seems like they need adapting with vcds , my R36 bi demons pointed on the floor , took it to Mike Holroyd who said they need adapting , he ticked the box and hey presto super douper

Yeah they do the full dance and corner correctly they just don't seem to adapt to driving speeds.

What options in the settings menu?

I'm on my 2nd O3 with Xenons and haven't seen any options for AFS in the menus?

I suffer exactly the same as you with my new Golf R, it has those fancy lights that do the start up thing but IMO on open moor roads are downright dangerous, I struggle to do the NSL.

Im glad to see that its not only who question the AFS.

My beef with it is that beam has a wierd habit of focusing on the bushes on the other side of the road. Even in speeds up to 90kmh.

If I flip the lightswitch to dipped beams and back to auto the beam seems to correct itself.

mine does the same.  I was going to put a thread up but hadn't got around to it.  Its become evident again with the clock change and more country roads.

Anyone know if these lights are supposed to "reach" forward when you get up to speed?  Mine stay stuck about 2 white lines ahead at all speeds.

Ive got VCDS so can check settings if anyone knows of any?

To adjust mine they made a physical adjustment with the setting screws and then an adjustment on the on board electrics. As I said, they now are spot on ( sorry!)

You have to put them in to a mode to adjust them :) if you just fiddle with the adjusters they end up all over the place

just to confirm does the mk3 vrs have the motorway and country light as per 1:28 in this video? =

Mine seem to be stuck in town mode no matter which speed I'm going.

I know it's not the same car, but there is a "Motorway" setting for lighting on my new Leon - accessible from the infotainment unit.
