I'm going to be dead before this stuff becomes mainstream. I have a better chance of getting my hoverboard and George Clooney clone.

I'm confused even more.....

I didn't think you were that OLD )))

I'm not 'that' old. But I think I would still win the wager :D

I've been waiting for these next gen batteries most of my life. not holding my breath

but to answer my previous question I see Renault have a van that is electric and has a range extending fuel cell, well sort of

GCR

Has an article about the Zoe for hire in the Outer Hebrides charged by the wind....plenty of it there I guess.......(waiting for the obvious response)))

now if we could get the next gen magic batteries, and run a range extender from the deathly cow methane, we'd have a winner :)

There is a prize (possibly) for the first person to get a pinapple on topic in here.

I get my pinapples from the local supermarket , now if I take my octavia 2.0tdi to said supermarket after I have the 'fix' to reduce my NOX emmisions will I be using more fuel to get there or alternatively will I be able to get there as quickly if there is reduction in the power of my car?

I managed to put my porridge pot into my big mug of tea I was so surprised by that answer :D Unfortunately the mug was nearly full at the time. I think it is technically known as hydraulicing your mug

Well done the man to get back OT!

Check out the latest mining news around graphite extraction ......much demand leads to great supply ....it's plentiful and relatively 'cheep'! (Python)

I don't doubt any of it. But these next gen batteries have been' just around the corner' for decades and they still aren't here. perhaps in the next 10 years I'll see them, but even then I am not going to expect to have them in any appliance I own in that time.

The very latest Graphene report

Google

Hannah Francis the Age Graphene 31 October 2015

Eg Samsung batteries with Graphene components already

I haven't seen any mega battery's on the shelf?

Here is an article you will like

In my life we have had

  • SP2/11/7 etc
  • Duracell (wow they did last a bit longer)
  • Ni Cads, recharables that worked (slight voltage drop though, oh and memory problems)
  • Lithium Ion and lithium rechargeable types (better - withought the memeory problem.....except that's not totally true)

Overall the battery has improved a bit, but nothing stella in the last ......well lets say 40 years to be kind (to me). And in that time, we have been promised a miracle battery every few months. nope, the tech might be there, but the battery isn't imho :(

VAG will be back in profit before the Miracle battery hits the shelf. There's a prediction you can take to the bank..........probably :D

Or mets win the World(?) Series also?

Btw, you do realise that the conspiracy theorist will have a field day now. The ' we have the miracle battery but the car manufacturers wont let us build it' will start. Also the 'Oil companies don't want it to happen' and the 'Governments can't stand to lose the tax from the lost oil revenues'.

That is an American sport of some sort, but that is all I know :D Do they have high emissions (back on topic for the win)

There you go again, talkin' dirty.

Actually it's an interesting point. If we had the mega battery in our cars, ones that would charge in minutes and power the car for an age, how would we refuel them? The Power Station's would be in overdrive to produce the extra juice, especially in winter when we all need our heaters etc and that would necessity more stations as we all have electric cars, probably nuclear Power Station's too. Either we would have to have very high current handling recharge points, not just you average 16 amp or we would need very high voltage outlets, which aren't necessarily safe. I think we should stick to petrol and diesel and wait till the VAG 'crisis; blows over in a few months and then carry on as normal (which is probably what will happened).

The use of batteries, mainly Lithium ion, LMP and simiilar mean that electricity will be stored from the grid and act as a buffer so that local demand can be met from the charging stations charging at 50 Kw/hr and even more powerfully ones are planned.  More renewable sources plus more nuclear here and in France, provided by EDF will provide all the base load we need topped up by wind turbine, off and on shore, that is required and all without CO2 being produced except in the production and decommissioning phases. Cars will need less battery storage as they become lighter from use of composite or aluminium material rather than steel so less power needed.  Battery cars can place the weight right at the bottom of the car for better weight distribution than an IC car.

The charge points are quite a hassle as I am finding as my company, part of its massive other divisions rather than the logisitic division I work in, as we have to deal with 43 different boroughs in London where we only deal with one authority in Paris.  The charge points require big investment and putting them at the public places such as near tube stations etc can be awkward with all the admin but thankfully the supermarkets have latched on as a winner to bring people in so park up, often charge for free at 43/50 Kws and come back to a near fully charged car when shopping done or just having a Costa etc. Trick is to arrange this for people who want to hop from outer London to inner London.

We cannot afford to let the current sitiation with deadly pollutants like NO and PMs continue and we need to and will commit to lower CO2, whilst not deadly like the former CO2 is contribting to climate change and if we exceed the 2 C rise in temperature most scientists agree the affect on change in weather patterns will kill millions not just the hundreds of thousands premature dying from NO and PMs.  Like the Tesla provies, electric cars can be fun as well as ones like the Leaf and Zoe being practical for most people, just needs taxation to make the the lecky cars the cheaper alternative via taxation and price those diesels with high NO and PMs, ie non-Ad Blu/SCR, away from being a choice for most people.

It's a monty that fast food and fast charging are coming to an outlet near YOU.

To not is to fail to compete.

Winning combo.  Just need induction loop type charging so no leads etc just park over the charging unit and it happens automatically and the same for diesel/petrol stations, just park on the spot, get charged up, nip in get a coffee etc, come out to a topped off car.

Audi reveals their new Alstom hybrid

Audi is introducing their plug-in hybrid locomotive built by Alstom and set to be used at the Ingolstadt factory in Germany. The Volkswagen Group is going through some difficult times due to their heavy-polluting EA189 TDI engines, but they have announced plans to focus on greener cars and now they are also making their transport logistics more eco-friendly by using a 1,000 bhp plug-in hybrid locomotive manufactured by Alstom. It will serve its duties at Audi’s Ingolstadt factory and will cut annual CO2 emissions by up to 60 tons compared to a regular locomotive, thus enabling VW’s premium marque to get closer to a CO2-neutral status at the factory. No less than 15 trains arrive every day at the Ingolstadt North railway station for Audi packed with pressed parts, transmissions, engines and also with cars from other Audi sites that are ready to be delivered to their rightful customers. The automobile plant in Ingolstadt has 18 km of railways and employs 17 locomotive drivers in charge of allocating the wagons to the various plant buildings. Each day, a locomotive has to perform up to 75 shunting maneuvers and annually it operates on average for 3,800 hours.   This new plug-in hybrid locomotive from Alstom can run on full electric mode for up to two hours and it doesn’t have any emissions when used in the plant buildings. During breaks, the battery is plugged in for recharging (with CO2-free electricity) while in motion it’s supported by a diesel engine.

Sorted, rail the EA189s around and then they can just drive the last few miles, shame Skoda trams cannot be used here.
