Did they buy back many here?

No.

They did buy back in the UK.  Not the Euro 5 though,  the ones that dealers first registered them sold just after,  which they were not to,  and euro 6 emission petrol and diesels with the irregular / implausible co2 g/km results which was lost in the confusion as VW admitted to many,  then announced in dribs and drabs there were fewer.  Sales were suspended, orders canceled and there were buy backs,  late 2015 early 2016.
