Major Engine Issues

Featured Replies

Basically, stupidly the last owner of my vehicle cable tied the bottom cover of the timing belt on, this cable tie give in and got caught in my belt.

The belt jumped a few teeth and has caused 2 bent valves.

The problem I have is, I am paying a garage to do the work and they are worrying me about if they fix the whole top end and the rod is bent then it was all a waste of money..

but another problem I have is... if I buy another engine will I get the same issues soon?

Any help very very very appreciated as im clueless with this sort of thing...

Thanks!

Jake

does 12 hours labour to check rods sound right?

Not really! I assume the head is off as they've had a look at the valves, in which case the sump can come off and the rods out within an hour.

The rods will be fine, it's always the valves which yield first due to the MASSIVE difference in strength between a conrod and a valve.

Like hitting a nail with a hammer then checking to see if the hammer got damaged, simply retarded.

pretty much as above, the hydraulic tappets have probably taken a hit so will need replacing as well.

As they've got to take the top end off to do the work, it should be obvious how much mashing has occurred in the combustion chambers. If there's the odd mark where there's been contact then redo the whole top end and refit the head, compression test, just to be sure and off you go.

However, if the whole piston and head look like a train wreck and/or there are broken slabs of valve in the chamber, than it more likely that there is bottom end damage.

Summary I s'pose.... Did a valve head break or fall off?

 - NO: Rebuild the top end only is likely to get you on the road again.

 - YES: It is likely that at least one of your pistons and rods and the head have taken a beating. It's more cost effective to source a replacement engine.

All they need to do if the head is off is measure the piston protrusion. A bent rod will be shorter so piston will be lower than its opposite.

^ Neat. Thanks for sharing that tip.

Hard to spot a bent rod from underneath with just the sump removed. Piston protrusion will tell everything you need to know really but if it's just clattered the valves the bottom end should get fine unless the valve head has fallen off lol..

Valve guides will almost certainly be cracked too so I would get a new set fitted as if one breaks apart afterwards it will ruin the piston, head, injector and turbo lol..
