Intermittent front wipers kaput this morning

Morning peeps.

Set off for work this morning (in the Polo) after scraping a bit of ice off the windows.  Soon realised that my front wipers weren't working on the intermittent position (at any of the delay settings).

I definitely didn't try to wipe the screen with the wipers still frozen to it.

They work on continuous, and single-sweep by pushing the stalk down briefly. Just swapped a different 20A fuse into what I think is the appropriate fusebox spot, F46 on Polo, (F41 on Fabia), no improvement (couldn't check the one that came out, I dropped it down behind the plastic trim, d'oh!)

Any ideas? Anyone had this before?

Faulty bonnet switch?

Bingo!

Had a battery charger on it last night. Obviously failed to shut the bonnet properly afterwards. Cheers Lee. :)

Why doesn't this affect the continuous wipers though?

Glad that's all it was :)

I don't know why it only affects intermittent. I was able to find this on the Internet but it doesn't say much other than it's a safety feature...

Blocking windscreen wipers
If the windscreen wipers are operating in the
intermittent wipe mode (speed-responsive inter-
mittent mode or rain sensor mode) and at the
same time the bonnet is opened, a signal is
transmitted by the bonnet contact switch F266
to the onboard power supply control unit.
The control unit blocks the movement of the
windscreen wipers until the bonnet is again
closed.
This function is intended as a safety measure
when carrying out work on the car.

I guess it's more obvious that they're on if they're on continuously.

Whereas you might have them on intermittent, then open the bonnet while it was 'on a break' and cause a collision.

Anyway, I owe you a pint.

I quite like my arty, sun-dappled photo too. :)

Yes it's very arty :sun:

I've just had this very same issue. Typed 'intermittent wipers' in the search bar, found this, checked my bonnet as I topped up the screenwash the other day. Bonnet not shut properly!

All sorted so another 'Thanks, Lee' from me

^ Nice one Lee :)
