Usually yes, as the DSG is heavier than the manual gearbox.

I'd rather sacrifice a couple of MPG and keep the DSG though :)

oh yes, I can't give up an autobox. I do 25-30k a year at the moment and i would really miss an auto.

I wish! Most of my miles are short urban trips. From £15 of Momentum 99 I got just over 80 miles, which I think is about 22 MPG :(

If that's a petrol model, it might be similar to my experience. Most of my mileage is very short urban driving transporting an elderly relative to shops, to church, to us for feeding etc. Mainly 0.5 to 2 mile hops with huge waits in between.

I think I've quoted this before here:

Petrol Automatic Omega      7 to 9 mpg

Diesel automatic Discovery  18ish mpg

Diesel Automatic Jeep GC     22ish mpg

Diesel manual Octavia          45ish mpg

Nothing has changed my view that the advice about diesels only being suitable for those covering long motorway miles can be shown to be nonsense. A cold petrol engine has fuel poured into it until up to temperature.

On long motorway runs the Omega approached 40mpg, with the Octavia 60 to 70.

Because of paranoia caused by having a succession of old Land Rovers, I've generally kept a book in each vehicle recording mileage and fuel input. The figures are based on that.

Diesels do give better mpg no doubt. However petrol engine cars take less time to warm up and don't have dpf filters so for short trips low mileage user's petrol is best. I know this from my own experience. Also did I mention duel mass fly wheels on diesels expensive when they go wrong. So what you save in fuel you end up losing in repairs in the long run.

I had a vrs petrol tfsi and now have pd170

on my daily comute of 10 miles the diesel wins hands down it hits 30mpg after 3 miles it took the whole 10 miles for the tfsi to hit 30mpg

Not all diesels in the mk2 range have dpfs so that doesn't add up .

And both petrol and diesel have duel mass fly wheels so that doesn't add up ?

Like I said diesels do give better mpg. Dpfs are fitted to later models for emission reasons. And because there is more torque on a diesel engine can cause dmfs to fail more frequently. It does add up. Unless you cover lots of miles. Which I don't.

so, 2 tank fulls in and they have both given me 500 miles each.

I've had my Octavia since last July and I'm really impressed with the fuel consumption compared to any of my previous 3 Citroen Xantia or my last Citroen a 2002 C5 2 litre HDI ... I reckon on any of them my consumption would be about 42mpg but the Octavia on a brim to brim check is consistently around 52-55mpg...I get around between 500-560 miles on a tankful

I'm not sure if it's my driving style, the type of journey, the remap or a combination of all of these but current calculations (http://www.mpg-calculator.co.uk/) show that I have averaged 61.58mpg over the last 2189 miles (161.6ltrs).  The trip computer is showing an optimistic average of 67.9mpg (approx +9%) over the same period.  I do a fair amount of motorway driving, about 80%, the rest is stop start town stuff.  I'm more than happy with that return which in theory will give me 812 miles to the tank (assuming it's 60ltrs).  I'm not going to see if I can get that though.  Can't wait till summer when my mpg should go up a little more!

If you think it's fuel type or some strange additives then I just use whichever standard diesel from any supplier I just so happen to be passing when I need some.  Murco is my most common fuel as it's near my house.  I have tried Millers Ecomax which did improve things a little but now the cost of the additive is more than the benefits gained.  I did try the 2 stroke oil thing as well which made no difference at all.

The car has been serviced once a year but using the longlife oil, it is still on variable servicing intervals but it just gets done once a year anyway.  Tyres at the moment are Goodyear efficient grip performance and the previous set were Dunlop blue response. No noticeable difference between the two so far as far as mpg goes, need summer to come along to make a proper comparison.

New to the thread, little late on the topic.... Bought a 2006 Octavia tdi 1.9 Pd 105 DSG 96,000 miles, 2 owners averaged around 7000 a year from new.... changed oil and filters, mpg on a hilly 15 mile commute to work is 50-55mpg... On a motorway at 60-65 mph GPS indicated I was getting 60-65mpg which I think is quite realistic for the computer.... Well now I’ve taken advantage of remap courtesy of Remap Kings, November £100 off all remaps, the car is running 140hp but I think that is quite conservative..... The car honestly pulls like a trooper now, it’s no bmw M car I understand but I’ve surprised a few VRS drivers with the DSG transmission.... I’ve even managed to record a 0-60 time of 8.4 seconds and a quarter mile of 17.2 seconds, I truly believe I can get a very low 8 0-60 time as the traction light was flickering in 1st 2nd and 3rd being in the wet.... Personally I think Remap kings figures are understated as it feels more like 150/160hp.... Regarding economy town driving MPG after remap has dropped from low 50’s to about 45. Motorway about 5-7 mpg also speed dependent... Just needs polybushing now and a coil over setup fitting, oh and maybe some decent braking hardware.... 😂

The most I got for a full tank out of my 1.9 TDI 2005 estate was 730 miles.    The light came on around 690 and the needle was pretty low at 730, so rather than push it I topped up.

Economy has been poorer this year due to working from home and less driving.   Lowest mileage for a tank before the light came on was around 550 miles, which personally I find disappointing!

Needless to say it's at its best in the summer and immediately post-service (the occasion of my 730 miler).

But all round for a large car it's very good economy.
