What cars has been owned and tested befor choose Superb III

Recommended Posts

I Always loved Citroëns.. I've owned the C5 160 excl aut (2012 <3) before that DS5 Sport 160 aut (2012) C5-2 and the xantia Excl (all were estates) (my father had a GS, guess that's where it started)  The C5 Tourer exclusive aut, which is the car I'm gonna exchange for a Skoda tomorrow, is (and there is no car even close) the best car I've ever owned/driven and I'm sad to see it go. (never had any issues with any of them.. great cars) I love the comfort and the quality of the ride (ds5 perhaps were more style than comfort.. thats why I traded it for the TOTL c5 but it SURE looked amazing <3). The interior of the C5/DS5 is (based on a couple of testruns in Superbs (first was smallest diesel (120hp? with 7dsg) one Style (second highest level in Norway with 150hp and 6dsg) and finally 190 L&K 4x4) approx the same as the Superb. Even as a "fanboi-in-spe" I can't say there is any big difference :D and the black leather in the french lady looks a bit better than the brown ventilated I'm getting (BUT.. that was my thought initially I'm SURE I'll deny I ever said that in a couple of weeks. The Skoda interior Is absolutely growing on me, just by watching the pics on this site. :D)

I chose the Superb sedan/combi l&k +++ because of all the gadgets it has, how it looks (it does look seriously nice!) and it's 20% more roomy than my c5 tourer.(??).. (that should in fact be impossible?)

I wanted to buy a brand new car with all the gadgets/engine needed to keep for a while. And the Superb seemed like the perfect choice. I tested the Mazda 6 optimum 4x4 (and really liked it. Its a beautiful car and drives and feels really nice) but in "the finals" I liked the Superb a tad more (but just a tad, and the Skoda had the glass roof (Which Mazda does not have at all in Norway) Also tried A4, Passat and a mondeo, but did not see any reason to choose those over the Superb (and the a4 is too small anyways and not even in the same category imho)  (yes, perhaps some bits in the interior were a bit more "solid"? i'm not sure, and even if so.. not worth it to me (over a maxed out Superb)   Hope I still feel the same in a year! :D :D

I almost feel sick waiting for tomorrow!! hope it works out nicely!  (anticipating some problems in the start since this is a relatively new "construction") ? :) but keeping my fingers crossed and hope the (new to me) dealer is "awraight" :)

I like how you see the progression in the cars people have owned :D. You went from 3x "learning to drive" to 2x "completely insanely fast cars" to "I need more space" to "**** the space, I want another fast car" to "Damn, I really need the space" :D

And having passed my motorcycle test in November, I have no need for another fast car at the moment (my Honda VFR800F ticks the fun box now) hence ordering a brown Superb Estate  :D

Hillman Minx side valve, 3 speed column mounted non synchro gear lever. (When I looked it up I noticed 0-60 time of 39.7 seconds!!!)

Austin A35 Van (modified with rear seats fitted and my first re-spray job)

Ford Escort 100E (the estate version) from late fifties. No heater; vacuum powered windscreen wipers and a brick on a piece of string as brake assistance.

Jaguar Mk 7. Can’t remember engine size but it had 2 petrol tanks; 4 cigarette lighters, a decanter and two tumbler glasses in the back.

Jaguar Mk X. 3.8 engine and first car I owned with all round disc brakes. Also taught me about triple SU carbs; the hard way!!

Then followed a period of works vans/land rovers which are not worth mentioning here.

Ford Zodiac.  Mk3 2.5 litre and 0-60 in about 14 seconds. Went all the way to Cornwall from furthest East Anglia in the days before motorway loaded to the gunnewls with people and holiday stuff.

Ford Capri Mk1 2.0 litre which dropped its timing belt/chain which took a while to sort out.

Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 1.8  hatchback. Just boring work car.

Vauxhall Carlton or Omega (cant remember which it was but it was like driving a 3 piece suite)

Ford Sierra 2.0 litre saloon (two in 5 years). Good comfortable workhorses that never left me down.

Renault 19 1.8 16S (inherited as a company car; great fun but did my back in)

Renault Laguna (much more sensible swap with a colleague)

Ford Scorpio Diesel (again inherited and which blew an engine in fine style just North of Yeovil)

Ford Mondeo Ghia.Mk 2 Nice cars to drive and yet comfortable for passengers as well.

Ford Mondeo Estate Mk 2 as above

Mercedes C class C200(W202) elegance saloon. Smooth yet moved when asked..

Vauxhall Vectra ©  2.2 Elite. Went like stink but was still a bit bland.

BMW E39 525i saloon. (another back breaker! Only had it for 6 months)

Mitsubishi Pajero (import) 3.5 v6. Imperious gliding above the lesser mortals :p

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 v6. Bouncy, bouncy but a good 4x4. 20mpg did for it though.

Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4 petrol (two over 5 years) Good honest proper 4x4 and like Skoda you got a lot for your money.

Mercedes C class S204  1.8 Sport Estate. Yet another back breaker, do I never learn! Greta engine and auto box, shame about the suspension.

There are probably some more in there somewhere but the memory dims with time. Gone are the days of carrying a tool box and a bag of spanners around with you. No need to carry vital spare parts in the boot. My pal had a mark 1 zodiac and carried spare half shafts around!! We changed one out overnight on the A30 just west of Exeter in about 1964. Happy days :sun:

Lol ! I know you are Sagalout but I always kind of read it as Segalout ! I was expecting you to be about 35 !

1996 ish '89 "G" reg Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 SRI Saloon - Pokey engine, pretty good mpg, good interior for the time & a car to respect rather than love though. I have to say that when I took it to the dealers for a service & got a Vectra courtesy car when they came out I couldn't wait to get back in it - early Vectras were terrible!!

.

I used to have a K reg 1993 Cavalier 2.0 CDI which didn't have the red top engine, but loaded with spec... Ie.. Passenger airbag, valor seats, full electric Windows and sunroof, electric clock and CD player !

Quality car that was.

My 10p's worth on this thread:

1. 1982 Ford Fiesta mk1 which was my mum's runabout which I used after I passed my test in 1993. It had a 957cc engine and I worked it hard. Clouds of smoke would blow out of the exhaust when I started it up ☺

2. 1986 Ford Granada that belonged to my parents. A comfortable car but old and a little unreliable.

3. 1987 Peugeot 309 - the first car I actually owned. It broke down on average every 1000 miles. When the head gasket and starter motor went at the same time I decided enough was enough and it had to go!

4. 1992 Ford Fiesta mk3. It had a 1.4 litre engine which was surprisingly nippy and surprised a few people who assumed Fiesta = overtake!

5. 1997 Nissan Primera. Rock solid that car. It never let me down.

6. 2002 Honda Civic SE Executive. The first car that made me realise gadgets in cars were good!

7. 2007 Honda Civic ES. First car I bought new. I loved that car. Bulletproof reliability and amazingly quick. I only got rid of it when I started doing mobile discos and needed something bigger to lug my kit around in.

8. 2012 Hyundai i40 Premium. A nice, quiet cruiser, just lacks a bit of 'je ne sais quoi.'

9. 2016 Skoda Superb L&K. To come...

That's a varied selection there.  I'd be interested to know what you think of refinement and comfort levels on the new SIII versus the Beemer?

I just find the interior quality of BMWs a good 2 pegs down from that of VW Group (Including Skoda). In reality I'm choosing between a bottom of the range 5 Series (which admittedly now comes with Sat Nav and Xenons, the 2 features I've really missed after my MkII Superb) or a high spec Skoda.

That's the thing I'd probably take the Beemer again if equipment was equal, but to match equipment across the brands creates a car that isn't available at my company car grade.

2003 Skoda Superb I 1.9 pd 100 - er Superb - sold last year but still going strong

2006 Fiat Panda Eleganza 1.2 (second car) - actually pretty good and we still have it

Yeah the 'entry level' Beemers are now decently specced. I'm thinking a few different options now for my next change and one of them is an entry Beemer/Audi. Would miss a few things from the L&K but xenons, cream leather and sat nav would be three 'must haves' for me - all now on the entry levels models. I agree with you on the interior quality in the 5 series but the refinement levels are a notch up IMO.

A chance to reminisce...

1966 Morris Minor Traveller - Taught me to drive and car mechanics

1971 MK1 Escort 1100L - Taught me ditches were not good!

1968 Mini - 1300GT engine connected to the 1000 mini gearbox, Mk2 Cortina Peco rear box - rapid 0-60 times but never managed much more that 80

1969 Cortina 1600E - Loved that car - kept me skint during college as it wasn't economical

1971 Mk1 Escort 1600GT - later they called it the Mexico. Not a good example it had had a hard life by the time I got it.

1977 Mk2 Capri JPS 1600 - Black with all the striping

1981 Escort XR3 - non injection but for some reason was as fast as one!

1978 Mk4 Cortina 1.6GL - mega skint and needed to sort finances out. Bought cheap , tidied it up and sold for double money

1980 Mk3 Capri 2.0S - with the fishnet recaros. stunning example

1987 MK3 Capri 2.8i - brand new and one of the last. Such a fun car for a 22 year old!

At the point the cloud of sensibility came over me!!!

1987 Cavalier 1.6 LX

1981 Escort Cabriolet 1.6i - 3 cars as one (engine, shell and interior) all made up the fun summer car.

1982 Escort 1.6GL (wolf in sheep's clothing) - bought to sell

1978 Escort 1.3GL - accident damaged - bought to sell

1982 Nissan Sunny Estate - accident damaged - bought to sell (actually bought this car twice as damaged)

1978 MK2 Escort 1.6 Sport - low miles, owner needed money - bought to sell

1989 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia - heaps of fun and cheap insurance!

1990 MK3 Cavalier 2.0i GL - Superb Motorway car

1987 Mk2 XR2 - Stolen recovered. Sold to my sister who still owes me half the money! It was then stolen from her place of work and they paid out double what I paid for the car!

1990 Astra 1.8Sri - Stolen recovered. I really wanted the GTE but was going through divorce!

1997 Golf GTi 16v - First company car. 5 door model in black. put 100k miles in 3 years and never missed a beat

2000 VW Passat TDi Sport - 2nd Company Car and my first time with Derv. Loved it. Drove better at the end than when I got it (another 100k miles)

2003 Toyota Avensis 2.0 T3x - again a Company Car. Boring, sensible but did the job

2003 Yaris T3 - for the wife (2nd one!!)

2006 Zafira Design 1.9 CDTI (150BHP) - Left the car scheme for this as I was a home worker by now. Had a tuning box on it and was bonkers to drive.

2009 Mondeo Titanium x TDCI - Still not in the car scheme. One of my favourites. Wished I'd got the estate version

2012 Yaris 1.33 TR - for the wife - replaced the previous Yaris

2014 Nissan Qashqai 1.5Dci Tekna - Still got it

2015 Skoda Superb ---- Back in the company scheme again as I'm travelling 115 miles a day minimum. Love it, family prefer the elevated position of the QashQai, but this is far more practical and bury the right foot and she picks up well.

I wish I still had some of those cars today...  However, as I seem to have missed my 50th Birthday last year (family reasons) I'm going to have it again this year and plan to treat myself to a BMW 330 Convertible (about 10 years old) to keep for the summer.

Yes indeed, these were the years that I owned them, only had two brand new cars of my own, first in Oct 1999 Nissan Primera and Oct 2015, my new Superb SEL Exec.

Here's my very short list:

2006 M reg Ford Escort 1.4 - piece of junk but my first car so I remember it better than it actually was. Got me backwards and forwards between Birmingham and Cardiff as a student, never had to do anything to it other than tyres and break pads either. No idea what mileage it was on.

2008 Y reg Ford Puma 1.6 Zetec in silver - bought from a relative. I really liked this car, it was a lot of fun to drive and was surprisingly quick too. The engine died about 8 months after I got it, thanks to a leak into one of the cylinders which blew a hole in the cylinder. I got a reconditioned engine put in, which after 12 months also got ruined when the cam belt went. The guy who fitted the reconditioned engine swore he'd put a new cam belt on... webuyanycar offered me a bit more than the scrapyard and claimed they were going to scrap it. Imagine my surprise when 18 months later my allegedly scrapped car nearly crashed into me on a roundabout! Will never go near webuyanycar again, lesson learnt.

2009 57 Reg Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI Elegance in brilliant silver. I really wanted a Mondeo at the time but they were a bit more expensive and when I took the Octavia out for a test drive I was really impressed. Ok, not the most exciting car to drive but it ticked all the boxes and was huge on space which was essential for me with my daughter due in 3 months time and the step-kids to fit in too. And I'm still driving it today! Almost at 105k miles now (20k when I bought it) and it's been a fantastic car.

2016 Skoda Superb 2.0TDI SE L Exec hatch in black magic and black leather with Pegasus wheels, plus heated windscreen and nozzles, spare wheel, colour maxi dot, TSR (to hopefully allow Lane assist through VCDS), mats and a rear wiper. Hopefully it will arrive over the summer in July/August. My first new car.

I didn't test drive anything, not even the Superb. I knew I wanted a Skoda and I considered a new Octavia, but to be honset it was only very slightly cheaper once I'd specced what I wanted and I think the new Superb looks fantastic. With all the reviews saying such positive things about the Superb, I only briefly entertained some other options (Qashqai, Sportage) but whilst they looked good they just weren't what I wanted.

Several Ford and Vauxhall company cars over the years (mostly awful)

Had a Triumph 2lt Vitesse convertible through the stinking hot summer of '76 (great fun)

Triumph GT6 (great fun)

Triumph TR7 (not so great fun)

Nissan Silvia (lovely car)

I have a mk1 Audi TT roadster. 52 plate 88k miles (brilliant little car)

Running at present a Superb2 4x4 Elegance 190Tdi estate. Great buy and why I've ordered another Skoda.

Passed my test in February 1986, then had

1)      1973 (bought 1986) Morris Marina 1.8 DL Coupe  (orange)

2)      1976  (bought 1987) Opel Kadett 1.2 hatchback (chevette clone) (orange)

3)      1985 (bought 1988) Skoda Estelle 120 LS (nylon velour seats, rev counter and alloy wheels) (red)

4)      1984 (bought 1991) Ford Sierra 1.6 L in putty colour

5)      1990 (bought 1992) Toyota Carina 1.6 GL (metallic grey)

6)      1992 (bought 1994) Honda Accord 2.0i Executive (Seattle Silver) – This had a Japanese spec with an American wiring loom.

7)      1996 (bought 1996) Honda Accord 2.0 iLS (Beaujolais red)

8)      1998 (bought 1998) VW Passat 1.8 20v automatic – Dark metallic red – Only lasted 4 months as it could not drive in a straight line despite numerous alleged fixes

9)      1994 (bought 1998) Rover 820 Si (British Racing Green).  The best seats in a car I have ever sat in for comfort.  This car was also great fun as I fitted self levelling suspension, and as Lancashire Police used them everyone got out of the way.

10)   1997 (bought 1999) Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 iLS ( Verde green)

11)   1997 (bought 2001) Ford Sierra 2.0i Ghia (White)

12)   2002 (bought 2003) Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi Elegance (stone grey)

13)   2003 (bought 2004) Ford Mondeo 2.0 TCDi 130 – Pepper red

14)   2005 (bought 2005 new) VW Passat 1.9 TDi 130 Highline estate (metallic black) – had it for 5 months due to a collapsed rear suspension which wrote off the brand new caravan, did a straight swap for

15)   2005 (bought 2006) Ford Mondeo2.0 TDCi 130 Ghia Estate (pepper red)

16)   2007 (bought 2008) Honda Accord 2.2 CTDi tourer, changed due to buying a bigger caravan (Alabaster silver)

17)   2009 (bought 2009 new) Kia Sorento 2.5 TDI (black) – written off in October 2010

18)   2007 (bought 2010) Honda CRV 2.2CTDi (whistler silver)

19)   2010 (bought Jan 12) Honda CRV 2.2 i-DTEC (Deep Sapphire blue)  – current car, however this was written off 2 weeks ago by some idiot not stopping at a mini roundabout.  Caught on my dashcam, so not my fault which has been accepted.

20)    2016 – I think it will be a Superb 2.0 SE-L estate in Moon white.

PS Currently driving as a courtesy car, a 2015 65 Kia Sportage 2.0 TDI with 12K on the clock.  It is awful with a rock hard ride, and the fuel economy is awful considering it is only a 2wd, rather than the CRV 4wd.  It has 3 redeeming features, glass sunroof, reversing camera and Xenon headlights.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have looked at Honda CRV, VW Passat GT, Form Mondeo Titanium X, and Nissan XTrail

My list is not so long, but it looks like this:

1974 VW Type 2 tintop (stolen)

1992 Peugeot 205 'Style' (!)
1999 Focus

2005 Octavia II

2009 Superb II

2014 Octavia III (written off)

and now waiting for insurance payouts to collect 2015 Superb III SEL 190 DSG Estate...can't wait!
