MFSW retrofit - what went wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

recently I own a (used) Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo.

I like it and I'm very happy with this vehicle.

Now I would like to retrofit a multifunction steering wheel - only the keys.

I've found a how-to for a VW Polo (http://www.uk-polos.net/viewtopic.php?t=54171).

After changing the airbag wiring loom (part# 5E0971584A), I upgrade the two cables.

First the LIN from BCM (white plug), pin 17 to pin 10 on steering plug and the second +12V cable from pin 15 on light switch to pin 9 at steering plug.

I also bought the buttons (left & right) from ebay with part# 5E0919719F. Hope these are the correct buttons?

After everything was assembled, I've start testing the upgrade.

Turning on the lights, the buttons are green illuminated. So connection should be correct.

Unfortunately the buttons don't work correct. Exactly not a single button works. Only if I press the left wheel down, the volume of the radio increase although radio should mute.

What has gone wrong? Have I used wrong parts?

Do I have to recode these button-set with VCDS? I've just activated them by setting the hook at “Multi-Funktion-Steering-Wheel (MFSW) installed”.

Maybe someone could help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance, regards

Okay, yesterday I've checkt the VCDS Output.

Here comes the original output without installing the buttons.

In my opinion, the buttons should get listet.

For comparison here comes the outputfile of a Fabia II with standard multimedia buttons (file found at german Skoda forum).

Perhaps the buttons are broken?

Or the ebay seller has mistakenly sold the wrong parts (there is no part number on the buttons).

There are also buttons, which look the same, but have the part number "5E0919719A" or "5E0919719B" (DSG).

These buttons are only for the Skoda Octavia III, I think...

Maybe someone out there, retrofitted 5E0919719F buttons and can give me some tips how I could find the error.

Thanks in advance, regards

Ive got a Yeti MFSW on my fabia, which look the same as in the pic you linked.

Works faultlessly

Is there anything else needed to fit the Yeti wheel or is it just a case of straight forward fit and code it?

Hi. I also bought a set from the same seller and had exactly the same issue. I was lucky to have asked eddie_nl to fit for me. Eddie had done this mod previously without issue and could not figure what was wrong so he very kindly removed the complete steering wheel from his own car and connected it up to my fabia, result was all working perfectly. I returned the buttons for exchange and await the replacements arrival. It is slightly disconcerting that it doesn't appear that my set of faulty buttons was an isolated case. Contact the seller and send em back.

depends if youve got a MFSW already?

If you havent, theres a few wires n a few bits of coding. I didnt do it myself, but PM me if you want more info (:

Ive got a few pictures too.

Not a very good pic, but shows it abit.

It works, lights up n everything how it should. The left controls do the radio, the right does the maxidot. The Fabia 2 never got the right controls from the factory, just the buttons on the right stalk to do the cluster. So i never touch the right stalk controls, just use the steering wheel ones, otherwise it gets confused n doesnt work properly until rhe ignitions off and on again. Dont touch the right stalk though and its faultless

The phone controls work too and all info on the Maxidot, even though you might notice that the headunit is an aftermarket Zenec unit.

Hello

@Blackray

Thank you for telling your experience.

That helps a lot

@fabiamk2SE

Can you confirm the partnumber of the steering wheel buttons you used for retrofitting?

Are 5E0919719F (5E0919719G for DSG) the right one?

As described, there are for example 5E0919719A and 5E0919719B

Both of them are for the Octavia III and allegedly don't work for a Fabia II.

Don't know if this is correct, but I think so.

I cant really. They came in the steering wheel. It came straight off a yeti and straight onto mine, how it is.

If you can find the oem number for the Yeti (which i think will be the same as the Octavia) then its that.

Maybe they dont specify it as a fabia number, as fabias never came from the factory with left and right steering wheel controls. They only had left.

So by saying it fits a fabia, theyd be saying it fits a fabia steering wheel, which it doesnt.

Hello,

here comes a small update.
I've got some spare parts. The seller sent me some new buttons.

Now I've got some buttons with the number 5E0919719G. Although these are actually for cars with DSG, they will also work in cars with manual transmission.
After activating them with VCDS and everything seems to work correct.
Thank you all for the great answers, that was very helpful

At first I ordered the Buttons with the number 5E0919719F.

These are the correct buttons. But obviously the seller sent me some faulty buttons.

Therefore I returned them and told the seller to send me some replacement. A few days later I received new buttons. Not originally ordered 5E0919719F but 5E0919719G.

The only difference is that the buttons with G at the end also can used in cars with automatic transmission (but also work in cars without automatic transmission).

After everything works, I will not send them back.

  • 6 months later...

Hi all sorry to jump in on this post but I also have a 2013 mk2 fabia vrs dsg and would also like to retrofit the buttons to my existing steering wheel as it already has buttons for the radios controls but no buttons for the maxi dot display so just to confirm is 5E0 919 719 G the right part number that I would need and is there anything else that I should be aware of before buying parts?

Cheers in advanced

Without any warranty, this should be the right part number.

is there anything else that I should be aware of before buying parts?

You have to remove the airbag to replace the buttons. This could be dangerous and should only be carried out by trained personnel.

Maybe you have to code something with VCDS, but I can not say with certainty...

Sorry, but maybe someone with a DSG can help you.

Hello exantas,

no, unfortunately I do not have a current full scan. I would have to do a current scan.
However, I should have a (older) scan in which the multifunction steering wheel with the buttons already works.
Do you need any special information?

Best regards,

Hey,

I want to add similar to yours MFSW, on my 11' model Fabia 5J. I am trying to find out if my existing slip ring will work or I would have to change to a later version one.

So I thought that slip ring number might show on your auto scan.  Do you have by any chance the part number from the slip ring your car has?

Thank you for your time,

exantas

Hello exantas,

I apologize for the late reply.
I'm sorry, I do not know the slip ring number. I do not think this is listed by VCDS (the slip ring itself has no electronics).
My Skoda Fabia is a 2014 model. According to ELSA, it will probably be one of the last slip rings built in (with ESP) - I suspect 6Q0 959 654 D (for ESP).
6R0 959 654 (for ESP) I think rather not, because my vehicle was first approved 02/2014. I'm sorry, I can not say for sure.

There is a similar post in the German-speaking Skoda forum:
https://www.skodacommunity.de/threads/multifunktionslenkrad-beim-fabia-5j-nachruesten.71838/page-3

The user "boehmec" owns a Skoda Fabia MJ 2011 and has successfully retrofitted the multifunction buttons.
The user writes that he did not have to swap the slip ring. Only the airbag cable was changed to one for multifunction buttons. And of course, the additional LIN bus line and the power supply had to be installed.
I also understand the German language, if necessary I can help with individual posts from the German-speaking forum.
Please let me know if I can help you.

Best regards,
2014atmc

Thank you for the reply.
I managed to go over the thread using google translate.

On boehmec case he retrofired the old style of steering wheel - airbag cable. At this point there is only one way for me to find out - by testing it myself.

Fun fact: when I open Etka and set my vin number, the program is giving me
5E0 971 584A as the part number for the MFSW airbag cable.
