New battery recommendations?

Featured Replies

As part of ongoing diagnostics, it looks like my battery is the cause of a number of issues.

  • Left main head lamp does not come on
  • Constant Engine light on all journeys. EPC usually follows.
  • Battery light is the last to turn off after ignition
  • Having problems trying to get diagnostic codes
  • Reading won't go above 12.6V

It's an Exide EB500 and I noticedthat it is smaller than the cradle it sits in under the bonnet, as in much smaller. Dad fixed up the car after Ma killed it, so I'd imagine it was put in as a stop gap. I recently put a new stereo in which I was advised could pull through more power (maybe the straw that broke the camels back?)

It starts every time, but I'm sick of the EPC light (brake light always comes on and is fine)

I've got it on a trickle charger, but the diagnostic light is staying Black (needs charging) and giving a constant reading of 12.6V

So, what I'm completely ignorant of is how to choose a new battery? Am I only limited to the size of the cradle? It would be good to get a higher power one to account for the new stereo.

varta silver e44

+1 for Varta

And me......

Great, brand fairies, ze Germans thank you for your slavish loyalty.

I think the OP wants to know if he should fit a LARGER battery in his 1.4 PETROL Fabia which has a DIFFERENT sized battery than a diesel Fabia.

I say it's not necessary because the alternator should keep up with the daft stereo, just buy a new battery, recommended fitment for your car will be fine since it's a small petrol and doesn't need the brutal cranking power of a diesel.

it can accommodate the e44 and for the sake of a few quid why wouldnt you fit the best you can.

Nope, not a brand fairy, just someone who was recommended a particular battery and had good experience so sharing with others who are asking.

Hardly makes me a brand fairy does it you d!ck.

Needless and humourless, it wasn't the answer to the fecking question he was asking, which was the tongue in cheek point I was making.

Miele Hob, Miele Freezer, Miele Washer, Miele Dryer, Miele Vacuum and a Varta battery in the car.

Vot kan I say, Inglander? Ze Krauts..... zey make ze good kit, ja? :D

Yep, fair point, but you could have just said that couldn't you.

It's a shame you feel the need to add to your usually very informative posts with "needless" sarcastic or sniping comments, like the pointless one above about being a brand fairy. Needless and humourless indeed.

Spec of the EB500 appears to be ample for your car/engine, no need for anything bigger.

What can I say, Englander. The Germans make good stuff don't they :D

My old car had a varta which was on the the car 8 years and was perfectly fine when left weeks at a time over winter.

But Varta is accurately pronounced  'farter' in German, isn't it?  Don't need any more of those in any car I drive... :D

German for slip road (off the autobahn) is 'Ausfahrts'. Literally 'out drives'. Or.......... 'out farts' :D

My opinion is bigger is better.
Or buy agm battery.
I have this kind
Original Varta AGM Batterie 12V-68Ah-380A -7P0915105
I bought used I paid 20 Euros. The battery was manufactured in 2014.

He's always been a knob.

Hey, at least I haven't got a MASSIVE inferiority complex which insists on being taken seriously ALL the time and can't even handle a gentle ribbing.

Q: My battery is knackered, should I get a bigger one?

A: GET THE SAME AS ME, I HAVE THE TOP OF THE RANGE XYZ3000

Can you see why I might take the mic from time to time? I could be extremely rude but I never am, just a quip to '*****' self-importance and boorishness.

he asked for a battery recommendation, he got one!

The OP also mentioned

Reading won't go above 12.6V

So a check on the charging system is in order, as in a tired old battery once the engine is running and the charge light out should show readings of 14-14.3v

Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up getting this badboy for 60 quid http://tinyurl.com/jezc2pt

Guaranteed for three years so I should be golden.

Unfortunately it didn't fix my problems. It turned out the front headlight isn't on because the H7 connector came loose, and arced to the point that it's melted the plug  :envy:

Oh well. I'm also having the brakes redone as they were getting to the dangerous point :s

One day, I'll figure out why that engine light is always on  :notme:

Hate to but in guy's, but if you watch "super cars, super build" Quest channel, you would of seen the makings of a Lamborghini being built, then a 'Varta' battery fitted........ I was a little gobsmacked to say the least..

People probably reconmend Varta as thay are fited to most cars by the factory. I was also going to reconmend buying it from Tayna as they are cheaper than ECP, but it's too late now

Shame it didn't solve your problem. What have you been using to read the engine codes? It might be easier to take it to a dealer for them to have a go.
