looking at 2nd hand vrs's

Featured Replies

hi looking at 2nd hand vrs's looking to trade in my Suzuki swift sport , seen a few for sale with 90-120,000 mileage ,how far can a petrol engine go for??? I know diesels can go double if not triple what I am looking for but tbh I don't do that mileage

so looking from going 129bh in a no weight car to 200bhp in a Octavia my budget and part ex probably allows me 4k

are there many problems or should I stay as I am for now , always liked them

Hello,

Not sure if you are still looking at an vrs? I have a 56 plate petrol version. Mine had 70,000 mls with full history when I bought it last March. For me I have had a few issues with mine. The first problem I had was with the rear wiper motor. This was replaced with a brand new item. Since replacing that last year it has now started to play up again. Then a fuse kept blowing which also affected the air con circuit. This turned out to be an oil temp sensor. After that the air con had also given up! You can imagine by this time I was having second thoughts about the car... Thankfully the company where purchased the car from repaired the air con for me after a lot of hassle with a new compressor. The other day tone of the lambda sensors has gone faulty and shows an annoying light on the display. This is getting repaired on Monday for around £100.00. But, hang on a minute! today the air con seems to have gone wrong yet again!!! I am now not sure I would recommend one of these unless you have a spare few quid available. It may just be bad luck for me but I am just sharing you my first year of ownership with the not so reliable vrs...........

Over to you and good luck if you proceed in getting one

Its an 11 year old car!!!

If you want trouble free motoring this is probably not a route to go down.

If you cant repair cars yourself at that age its a bill waiting to happen.

id look to see what sort of service history a 2nd hand car has got and weather the clutch, duel mass fly wheel and timeing belt has been changed.

I don't have the vrs one. I've got the 2 liter bkd diesel engine.

clutches normally last between 125,000 and 130,000 ish miles depending on how you drive the car.

If it's any help, I've had my 07 plate estate for a year now.  So far it's been a reliable work horse, taking everything from the daily commute and family life to hauling mountain bikes, rubbish to the tip and five people with all their holiday stuff.  I know there are some horror stories about reliability such as chains on the FL models which is why I went for an 07.  I had a full service, timing belt done and new tyres all round as soon as I got the car.  I've then slowly picked away at small jobs that might not have needed doing such as coil packs as preventative measures but so far - touch wood - it's been a good car.

I've also done a few mods to the car that have made it a lot nicer to live with and again, it's taken them with good grace and hasn't decided to throw a massive wobbler as yet.

The only thing that has happened reliability wise was a sticking front caliper that created a lot of smoke & drama on the way to work one morning.  In the big scheme of things that's not a huge amount in a year's worth of motoring.

If you do your research and are willing to travel for the right car then you might be lucky and not end up with a lemon.  I travelled from Scarborough to Newport which is about 260 miles to get my car, but it was the right car for us.  Some people wouldn't do that but petrol estates in blue, with a reasonable spec and mileage aren't exactly filling the fourecourts in Scarborough.  At the time there were three cars for sale nationally that might have been suitable, two of which were in Wales for some reason.

Good luck in your search and if you find the right car, post up some pics.

edit : I've just looked on Fuelly and over the last 10765 miles the car has averaged exactly 35 mpg which is pretty good considering.
