Hi

My 2006 fabia vrs may be on the way out which it saddens me to say.

For the last 9 months have had the amber engine warning light on and this is code P2100 which is throttle actuator (I bought an OBII device). No issue and it went through an MOT fine.  I did notice the main pipe off the EGR valve to the intercooler pops slightly off and I cannot get it to stay on, plus there is a lot of oil in it which I clean out regularly.

Anyway, this aside it ran totally fine.

This week I had another fault where my traction control light comes on intermittently and now seems to stay on. I reset it but it is code P2102.

tic

Put the car into my local mechanic and he has it run through the diagnostic and it came up with a few faults, one of which was low manifold back pressure (or similar). Since it went on the diagnostic it does seem to have a worse throttle response, randomly being ok or either not picking up when I press the throttle. Was fine before it went on the proper diagnostic and reset the codes that way.

Apparently the other mechanic reckons it may be either the turbo on the way out an/or the ecu burning out and developing faults.

I have an MOT until Jan and was aiming to keep the car for as long as possible, as it is quick, economical and i really like it.

Any ideas on what i should do next? Is a new ECU a reasonable option or is this a bit of a nightmare?

Car has 2013,000 miles but apart from the above runs sweet. hate to get rid of it but mechanical says part x it before the MOT runs out as it will fail.

Cheers

I'm bored and I've just worked out that that car has done on average, 501miles a day over the past 11 years, no wonder the ECU is getting worn out?

Anyway, what is the correct mileage?

If you ever suspect an engine ECU, maybe get it checked over by somewhere like BBA REMAN - other places are also available, by doing that you should be able to dismiss that possibility?

Sack him, he's a moron. It's an electrical fault, probably engine bay wiring loom related.

yeah, may well have to do that.

Update:

Driving today it was fine at first but then i noticed on motorway had little boost and the throttle seems to be giving hints only as to what the engine should be doing. Hills are hard going, it struggles above 60 and i cannot feel the turbo, so driving to Corsham today from Cardiff was hard on the vertical bits.

Coming back though was ok. Only difference I noticed was that the traction control light had not come on, but was on in my earlier journey. On the long hill up from Bath to the M4 i had boost and it was fine.

Driving home from work was crap, even refuses to accelerate sometimes from the lights, then I keep my hoof planted and it will suddenly pick up and shoot off, though not at the usual boost level. I can also hear the turbo spinning as i could before the issues.

So I am a bit flummoxed!

I am wondering if it is ECU after all or as you say wiring or a connection. Will take ECU off tomorrow and see what I can see (I am an electrical engineer so not totally useless).

First option may well be sending it off to a specialist to see if they can detect any faults and/or repair it. If not then it is something more tricky. The fact I have the two standard faults P2100 and P2102 plus the traction control light coming on and off makes me wonder what else it can be.

Welcome any ideas you guys may have.

Does any one know any ECU people in the Bristol/Cardiff type area rather than me having to send it to the other end of the country?

Cheers

yeah, it could well be.

probably going to book it into a place I spoke to earlier in Cardiff, they are German car specialists, ECU specialists etc.

Guy said it may not be ECU, could be sensors somewhere sending it into limp mode randomly.

Had a trip today about 1.5 hours away on motorway and sometimes I had boost, others I had none. Even pulled away on a roundabout in 1st and utterly bogged down which was frightening.

They charge £65 to plus it in to a proper Skoda diagnostic to tell me what is wrong, so is with a punt I think.

I may be way off but what about cleaning out the turbo with mr muscle or similar? that and cleaning my intake/egr helped me when i had an overboost code

Computers don't "burn out" hahaha

car went in today.

they found wiring issues that needed replacing.

then when they ran the diagnostic again it showed a fault with the throttle body sensor/valve, so need a new one.

May get it back tomorrow. Curious to see if it fixes me traction control and engine management lights and if it drives ok.

Got car back with all faults mostly fixed.

Drives normally again now. Seems the error was breaks in wiring loom within the engine bay, wires also coming from alternator to ECU were damaged. The throttle position actuator also had to be replaced.

Only downside is that now my alternator seems to need replacing and the garage did not fit the undertray very securely which meant i lost it in the fast lane of the M4 a day after getting the car back, with no safe way of retrieving it.

Appalling

since I got the car back I car hear my alternator rotating which, being an electrician, I know is not a good sign. Odd that it was silent when i dropped it off but I put that doen to coincidence. Was driving it friday night and my radio and the backlight flickered then turned off totally. When I stopped the car it came back on, but I was worried I had lost all charge in the battery and it would lack the guts to start it back up.

Tomorrow I will call the garage and complain though I am not optimistic they will cough up for a new one.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hello

After having had my car back for a month now it generally runs ok but feels down on power, particularly where the turbo is concerned.

Photos attached/below show the new alternator I needed and also what i think is the throttle body/position sensor next to the EGR valve. In the past the hose to the intercooler had always been working loose but now it seems to stay in place.

Since I got it back though I dont get the turbo boost I used to pre-issue. Even on a hill in 3rd from about 2000rpm I put my foot down and the engine revs ok but the amount of boost feels totally different from how it used to be i.e. a lot less.

I am wondering if the electrical issue from the alternator to the ECU that was causing my faults damaged the turbo in some way.

Is this lilkely or a possability?

I welcome any further advice.

I had the amber engine warning light for a while which would not reset and the fault was P1200 (if i remember rightly) on my OBD code reader which was linked to throttle position sensor. I assumed that bt changing the ASV this was resolved, though as you can see below it would not seal to the pipe and kept popping off no matter what i tried.
