LED DRL updates

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My current LED DRLs are throwing errors every so often so think the driver is dying.

They've down a fine service but thinking something with bit more longevity would be good.

What are people running in theirs?

I'm still waiting for a company to offer a guarantee that lasts 30000 hours of use...or whatever they say the bulbs will last for.

After just three years I have to replace some interior led bulbs that should have lasted till I was dust!

Assuming it's the P21W/1156 bulb in the fog/DRL housing, I use 1156 Morimoto XB LED's in my Octavia.

They've been fitted for ~2 years and over 50k without issue.

Unfortunately, they've been discontinued, the new design from the same company is the X-VF.

Very simple: Use the original bulbs! Mine are now over 6 years old (and 90.000 km) and are still the original ones (as are all the other light bulbs on my S2...)

I found some LED bulbs that claim to be 15 W. Since the regular bulb is 21 W and I read somewhere you need 10-12W+ in order for the bulb to pass CANbus inspection, do you think they might work?

There is a guy having them on a Passat 2013+ with no issues, so I'm guessing they might be good. I'm not too keen on adding resistors.

I've had no luck with any LEDs I've tried in our Superb other than the interior boot lights. The rest have either died quickly, turned purple, or melted the housings. Having said that I have not splashed out on expensive LED bulbs....

They're not shy on their pricing! I think I may have to wait till next year and I go out there to get those. Morimoto is supposed to be the best in retrofit world.

These lasted about 18mths and only get the warning randomly. They are still working mostly so looking for ideas

The morimoto stuff certainly isn't cheap... Everything I've had from them has been very well made.

Mine were about $15 per pair as they were in the 'closeouts' section on theretrofitsource.

I use them as both DRL and indicators but for the latter I had to remove the bases and fit PY21W bases as they don't make them.

I'd never noticed that both LED sidelights had stopped working until it failed the MOT (so they popped in a couple of standard  501's to pass).  Yesterday, the same type of LED units failed in the front footwell lights and one of the door mirror puddle lights has blown. They've all been fitted for three years, so I'm going to have to find some good replacements, and I'll have to replace the lot -  sidelights, interior, puddles and boot. The LED DRL's I have, which were fitted at pretty much the same time, are perfect.

If you scroll down, the first comment is a Passat that has them fitted.

I've bought a set of these

VANSSI 1156 BA15S LED Bulb 18-SMD 6000K White Car LED Turn Signal Reverse Backup Brake Stop DRL Lights(Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01EQSPG7I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_rIkm6s5udpJbI

They've not thrown any errors and pull around 5w on my bench supply.

Nice and bright too and clean white.

I bought some Osram ones for mine and they look good. I had to buy a link in resistor for them and swap the wires around as the bulbs are polarity sensitive. I've also used Osram side light and number plate led's but I haven't got the resistors for them yet. I tried to buy resistors that will plug inline rather than scotch lock them onto the wires. I try not to cut wires if I can help it.

Forgot to say this ones I've had in since 2014 were a straight swap for the original bulbs.

No resisters and no dash warnings.

Just to add, i used these resistors off of ebay for led's  and they are spot on. Just plug and play, no buggering about with scotch locks or anything.

The bulb holders on the p21w drl bulbs had to be swapped over as it was near on impossible to find resistors that had the same holders as the skoda. But that didnt take long.

They look better in the flesh. No lights on the dash all is looking well. I used the link from WaveyDavey, thank you.

My car has only the fog lamps below, in case I decide on the retrofit (either the version you're talking about here or the version with the DRL LED strip built-in), I'm guessing I would need a new wiring loom for the DRL part of the light, right?

I don’t know I’m afraid but I’m sure some one more technically minded may know.
