I've got a slurper!

Featured Replies

The dreaded low oil level has pinged on at only 7k miles. That's a major minus point of our blossoming relationship. Luckily I found some magnatec at the services on the M5, serves me right for not checking the level, given their reputation, but the last three cars were teetotal so I've grown complacent.

By the way, is there literally a catch in removing the dips tick? Mines seemingly locked in place, and I gave up trying to force it earlier.

Magnatec isn't 504/507 approved so not the correct spec oil afaik. You need Edge 5w30 if buying from the Castrol range.

The disptick can be resistive to being removed, don't force it too hard or you'll break the retaining bits. If you tilt it slightly when pulling it should come out.

No point in using long life oil if it's consuming a litre every 1500 miles or so! Magnatec is fine, it's fully synthetic though a 40 rating at high temp would be preferable for engines that use a lot.

Mine did the same about 8k after the service.

I'll be checking it every 1k now. I keep some Edge in the boot just incase. Luckily I was about 2 mins from a Halfrauds when the light came on.

There are a lot of comments on here about the Oct-IIIs drinking oil, but I've not had an issue (yet!). Mine's on 14,000 and had a new metal sump fitted 2,000 ago with a full refill of new Castrol, which seems to all still be there (admittedly I've not checked in 2 weeks or so).

Forgive my ignorance, but is there any reason it just suddenly 'starts' consuming at an exaggerated rate? I've got a lot of 'continuity' kit in my boot ATM, but not oil (again, yet!).

@Ads230, mine doesn't consume to be refilled too. Something must be different in usage (long or short distances, high rev high speeds or normal driving) or oil type.

My mk2 petrol that was remapped from day 1 didn't use much, my remapped leon cupra didn't use any, and my superb 190 can run between 17k services on a litre. It seems to be random, I used the usual run in procedure too.

@nidza / @stever750 - Cheers, that provides some assurance then. Mine's yet to be remapped (Shark, later this year), but I'll keep tabs on it to see if it makes any difference to consumption.

I also ran mine in from 2,200k when I first got it, so i hope that's gone some way into 'easing it in gently'... unless the other half has sneakily been topping it up each time she hoons it about!

Will follow this post to see if any of you lot have any major changes.

Yeah I grannied mine 200 miles in traffic to the west country on August bank holiday friday then, drove it like I'd just stole it from then on, oil level hasn't changed over 2,600 miles

Is that the usual ?

What engine is the thread about a Euro 6 TDI?

Long Life Oil and Long Life Servicing is not why the recommended oil is what it is with VW Group.

As to 5w 40 FS VW 502 00 in a TSI engine, that is Simply Clever use of oil, Long Life oil meaning Short Life Engines in the TSI case quite often.

No point, unless the oil you put in does not suit the DPF, then the cost of the new DPF will outweigh the savings made on the oil.

Good point, though I suspect that might be a marketing ploy? Magnatec ain't cheap anyway, that wasn't the motivation. As it happens I've since bought a couple of litres of halfrauds vw long life rated stuff, which will suffice I told I find the ideal stuff from Opie and start buying in bulk again...

Keep an eye out @ costco, they generally do Edge for 20 quid a can every 3 or 4 months
