You get a Mk2 Fabia vRS for less than that,

but 'buyer beware.'

There is a good one advertised in the Briskoda For Sales, and from time to time other Briskoda members sell good ones that they know are not Excessive Oil Users.

Haven't really considered a mk2 tbf always liked the old diesels what's your opinion on the mk2 vrs?

Its a great car, I'm looking at getting one in the next month, but for that budget, you can only get the oil drinking CAVE engine, so thats always a problem. Some of the engines had issues due to quality control and bad parts. A lot were rebuilt and sorted, but some might not have been, so you should enquire as to the service history

Make no mistake, its a BRILLIANT car and a very big improvement over the dirty mk1 diesel, but as with any car one should be cautious buying one to make sure its in good shape.

^^^Do not go by 'looks' or thinking it is in good shape,

as that means nothing, some of the best looking need a new engine or DSG.  You need to really know Warranty & Service History, and out of warranty history, and then you want a 'Valid Warranty, a Warranty that will pay for parts & labour if others would be doing any work required.

Even a Skoda Warranty can end up not paying out when Skoda UK say 'Known Issues'.

& you do not only get Oil Drinking CAVE for that price, you can get a 'Non Oil Drinking CAVE engine one,

one with its 3rd engine fitted from new, maybe a great running engine with the best bits fitted,

& you can pay more and get 'An Oil Drinking CTHE', or one needing a new water pump, or with Timing Chain issues.

Best do more research. Pinned at top of Fabia Mk2 Section a good start.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/294051-cave-cthe-14tsi-just-reply-please-if-you-have-had-an-engine-replaced

last page last post might be a help giving you a clear idea just how careful you need to be, buyer beware!

Below not just the Fabia, or starting in 2010, Seat, Skoda, Audi & VW Twinchargers in various vehicles, 150, 160, 170 & 180 ps.

2009-2015 as it turns out. Even earlier than 2009 in VW's.

Engines stopped being rebuilt with replacement rings 2011 by Skoda UK, the short units were supplied, later Base Engines, then the CTHE introduced and engines replaced with them as well.

& you get oil users from late 2012 on with the CTHE engine as well.

CTHE have required Warranty work on early models. even new oil squirters and breather mods, Software Updates.

DSG from 2013-2015 a Service Campaign Software Update 34H5, and from 2010-2013 and later Service Campaign 34F7, Oil Change and Software Update/

Would you advise to stay away from mk1 diesel VRS then? If so why?

If you want a Manual Diesel your budget will get you a Mk2 Fabia from 2010 with a 1.6TDI CR 105 ps.

But be aware that one might have had the VW Fix', which might be something not worth having.

You can remap a 1.6TDI CR and have 140 bhp or so and have similar to a Mk1 Fabia vRS.

Awaoffski knows more clearly so it might be worth asking him. As far as I know they do not have major reliability issues like the Mk2 CAVE engines. Some people found engine replacements fixed everything and it ran fine afterwards, some still had issues afterwards.

Like with any car its worth finding out the major known issues for the exact model you want, and inspecting one in person to see if it has the issues. For a tenner you can get a bluetooth OBD2 scanner that will tell you any issues registered on the car computer which can be VERY helpful as it needs no technical experience. That, and check the MOT history with an app :) You might see advisories like 'turbo oil leak' which will be very helpful in stopping you from buying a lemon.
