And for those whose OCD needs them to remove the old stay. It took the second bang on the head to sort my OCD out and refit the stay.

I left the stay fitted "just in case" but have never needed to use it - I fitted Superskoda stays

I bought a pair but only needed to fit one, have kept the other for my neighbour, they were dirt cheap on E-bay, less than a tenner the pair I'm sure and came with several sets of different ball ends.

Fitting to the RHS was easy and I just used a suitable washer in the hole that held the rubber grommet for the OE stay to make up the diameter and a pair of clamping washers either side, at the bottom end the ball joint stud fitted straight into one of the wing bolt holes. I gave the pistin rod a slight tweak at the end to stop it being strained.

I did not fit a reinforcing bracket at the top, if you open and close it with care there is no more load or deflection than given by the OE spindly stay.

Found the listing, they were £7.28 delivered with the different end fittings when I bought them:

This link still good. Purchased for a little more £8.59 delivered!

Cheers

My single one is still doing the job, you will need a few washers for the fixing to where the bonnet stay usually hangs from the bonnet, one of them needs to be a spacer between the threaded fixing and the larger hole left after the grommet is removed, keep the old strut and grommet under the boot floor in case its ever needed.

So my eBay struts plus washers all arrived over the weekend. It took me about ten minutes to fit them (i used both) - very simple to do. There is a link to another post in this thread somewhere with a detailed write up on how to change them.

I would say the bonnet needs lifting to 30% until the struts take over, then they are quite sprited in taking the bonnet up!! IMO it looks much more professional and uncluttered without the bonney long arm rasied - all in all i'm very pleased with this 'mod'.

Since Febi Bilstein  (advised in many forums) gas springs weren't available, installed Krosno (Poland) 23183, generally used for SEAT Ibiza III hatch tailgate.

http://www.fakrosno.pl/en-GB/aftermarket/products_and_services/gas_springs/aftermarket_catalogue

Matched perfectly.

Length 527mm, stroke 210mm, 350N.

+ 10mm ball studs M6 & M8 from ebay.

Thread length for M8 (for hinges) was 10mm- but better would be around 12...13mm. For M6 thread length 10mm is more than enough.

+ M6 wide washers and M8 Std washers from DIY shop.

And yes- old metallic strut and it's yellow fastener is removed from car ;-)

@NikTheGeek There are loads on eBay so many that I was concerned about not getting the right ones or a cheaper copy. I ordered from a place called Opie Oils based in Cornwall, £25.75 including postage, 350 Nm ejection force. Here’s a link, they still have them in stock:

Hi Gusto, i ordered  the above, they came today.

I didn't think about about fittings, can you remember what ball fittings you got, and from where ? Thanks.

Thanks to Gusto and others who have posted on this subject.

@NZ100 yes! I’ve never opened and closed a bonnet so much in my life after fitting these.
Did you remove the original bonnet holder or have you left it there as a back up? I was going to remove mine but I ended up leaving it.

Hi Gusto, i watched a video of someone fitting their's and they had to undo everything again to be able to take the original bonnet holder off, so i decided i was going to remove it before i started.

Things do look neater with it off. I'll store it with the bolts you take off, with all the other bits and pieces I've taken of other cars.

great thread, just fitted mine this afternoon. I had to buy a M10 spline from local autopart shop which fits into a 10mm socket and it worked a treat. Moment of panic when I realised the female bit at the thin end of the strut was 90 degrees out from fitting on the wing ball stud but a slow twist sorted that out. very pleased with result for a grand total of about 55 quid.

Just got the Superskoda kit 40€ plus postage but include some other items, that’s £35

How quick was delivery? Looks like its a cheaper option than my attempt. I do have my eye on a few Superskoda bits though.

Order placed last Wednesday evening shipped Thursday arrived this morning, Monday

got some other genuine Škoda parts around 30% of uk cost.
shipping is 10€ so needs to be factored in.
oh and the bonnet fixing pin has a longer shank to clear the hinge.

Anyone else's go really rusty over the winter?

Bought mine on ebay and was shocked to see the state they are in after just a year. Most worrying is the little clip that holds the ball in the socket looks well rusted and like it could snap then the bonnet would come crashing down.

Forgive the dirt of the car :)
