Initial impressions - disappointed

1.4tsi manual SEL hatch with dcc

Delivery was almost 2 weeks ago, but I havent had time to drive it much.

Today is the first time I have taken it out to stretch its legs, a 60mph run up and down the motorway, 10 miles.

To say P7s are noisy is a gross understatement, I initially thought wheel bearings had gone. They ruin the car.

Tried the dcc in comfort vs normal mode, couldn't detect any difference.

Steering was numb and no feedback whatsoever.

Lots of others things too but too depressed to write them down. If only I had some proper test drives and tried other makes. I realise now that I probably made a bad decision, an impulse buy pressured by the scrappage (ending then in Dec), marketing, gushing reviews etc

Live and learn.

  • Ok ok, I'll check the tyres.   I am just going outside and may be some time.....

  • Why do people give up so young. Our neighbour at the last house told me as he turned 65 that he could not see himself driving much longer and the car would have to last him.   Me and the Mrs

Disagree in all the above, except for the tires; can´t comment on them, as my car was delivered on Hankook. I find the Superb 1.4 TSI smooth, comfortable with the right kit and look. Tried multiple other brands and models; and just ordered another Superb. Each to their own, I guess.

Sorry to hear that xman. I genuinely look forward to every trip in mine and its not just because of the power on tap. Currently faffing about with Ecomode ( again ) to see what I can eek out of a tank.

Lets hear what else you don't like about the car.

Love driving mine. Big, comfy and can carry 4 people & luggage hundreds of miles without much effort.

Yep, it ain't no sports car, suspension a bit bouncy, P7s are crap tyres.

I have the "drive mode" selection but only ever used in eco or normal. Sport will apparently make the steering stiffer/more feel?

Really surprised to hear that @xman. Agree entirely on the tyres, but not the rest. Any chance you could jot down what else is disappointing? There are so many things you can change via menus for example – it may be that you just need to play with it more.

Sorry to read this xman

I think the tyres are a given based on my own experience and from what I've read on here.

What about DCC in Sport mode vs Comfort/Normal ?  What about just switching everything over to Sport mode and see if the steering feels that little bit more involving and heavier/direct?

In contrast (and this is very subjective), I tested pretty much everything else I fancied/could afford (C class estate, A4 avant, A6 avant, Octavia vRS estate, Mazda 6 estate) and the Superb Sportline was by far my favourite.  Well I thought the Mazda 6 was actually much nicer to drive (think big MX5) but as an overall package it fell short of the Superb and it was noisy without the P7's!

@xman I'm curious to know what tyre pressures you're running? I've got the P7's and don't find the noise objectionable, but then I came from an Alfa Romeo Brera.

Have you tried sport mode for the steering?

I've not actually explored the personalisation menu so I don;t know what suspension modes there are. My car sits in Comfort 99% of the time anyway.

What car did you come from xman? Like some others I am surprised at your comments as my my17 220tsi is a smooth glider.

Do try the sports mode if you prefer firmer feel to steering/suspension. You should feel the difference in the steering response quite easily if it is working properly. You can also select each element in the 'individual' setting so you can have sport steering with normal drive etc.

Also, we sometimes expect too much from a brand new car at first as we are 'listening' more actively than after a few weeks. I heard all sorts of noises at first that now seem to have disappeared:biggrin:

p.s the P7's are noisier at first, they do improve a little with mileage but mine are going soon with 4mm still on them.

added p.s.

Agree P7s are rubbish but like others have mentioned my own 220 is a joy to drive. Active suspension is noticeable on mine. Try going over a speed hump at speed in comfort mode and then try the same in the other modes. You barely feel them in comfort.

Play around with personalisation and put the steering in sports mode and that will make a difference.

It isn't a sports car and was never intended to be. It was designed as a very comfortable cruiser. Not sure if you have bought it from new but you also have to run it in - the tyres do get slightly better with more miles on them but are not the cars strongest asset. See the running in TSi engines thread.

I will refrain from further comments until I get a few hundred miles under my belt. Maybe my views will change. I have access to a few cars but even our lowly 09 fabia htp has quieter tyres/ride (not engine though). I traded in a Mk1 Alhambra, which is still is head and shoulders a better smoother ride. One of the things I should have gone for is the narrower 17 inch tyres and taken more notice of the P7 comments.

Give me a few weeks to form a more objective opinion.

Yes ordered and bought new. Now got 25 miles on the clock.

What size wheels is it on?

235 45 18

The only place my 19s with the Pirelli rubber on are obnoxious is on the dumb concrete bits on the M25. Apart from that I can't honestly say its been noticed at all. Mine already had 3k on when I got it though, so the car has settled maybe.

Hopefully they will get quieter. Though in 45 years of motoring my experience is that brand new tyres always are quieter than worn.

Had my 1.4 TSI for 6 months and although the tyres are not the best dcc is excellent. I remember people commenting on transport blocks being left in place, maybe with a look?

Have not noticed any more tyre or toad noise with my superb compared to my old vrs. If anything it is much quieter in the Superb. So can not even agree with the P7 comments.

I also disagree with all OP wrote except for tires (no idea there, got Hankook). DCC is probably something I love the most about this car. Steering is perfectly responsive (specially on sport, where the cornering support is turned off (not sure how to explain this function). 17.000km on clock, loving it. I did have some issues however, badly configured doors (i heard a lot of wind noise in cabin - seals didn't do their job), standard Skoda/VW issue with arm mount bushes (I think, not 100% that's how they're called in English - my mother had same issue on Octy 2014) and few other minor issues. But every thing was fixed under warranty.

Other than these issues, I simply love the car. And I was deciding between 2015 Audi A6, E220 (Benz ^^), Mazda 6 and some more.

i can confirm, a lot of cars are much quieter than Superb III

even twice cheaper Hyundai Sonata were quieter after 105 kKm on ODO
and 1/3 cheaper neighbor's Peugeot 508 too

and two years older E-Class with 110 kKm on ODO

Well, mine is just as quiet as the rental 520d, F-Type, E-class and pretty most of the rental cars I’ve had in the past.

I guess it's all subjective really.

I've got an SE-L on the same size wheels. Mine went straight from the dealer to National Tyres to have a set of winter boots put on it, so I can't really comment on the noise from the P7s, that said, running Sottozeros, I can't imagine the P7s are going to be any noisier, and I only find the tyre noise irritating on concrete motorways.

Depending on you DCC mode, the steering can be light. I've got an individual profile set on mine, some aspects like the steering and ACC is set to sport, drive is eco and such. I do a lot of miles for my work, and having owned VWs, Vauxhalls, Mercs and Toyotas, and I drive my guitarist's 2010 Passat Highline too, the Superb is definitely the most comfortable and informative to drive of the bunch.

Again when I was looking to change, I looked at all sorts in my budget such as new C Class Merc Estate, A4s, A6s, Rav 4, and the Superb came up trumps for me again.

Mine is just a week old and it’s as quiet as my old a4 (14 plate  from new )if not quieter, and as for the p7’s they are no louder than any other tyre I have had ,Dunlop’s on the Audi,  but I do drive around all day I a van full of tools, so every thing seems quiet, just turn the radio on.

cant believe people drive around listening for tyre roar or rattles, I think this p7 thing is a bit of a myth, it’s the poor state of the roads

A 10 mile motorway trip is no way to assess suspension or steering response, wait for a decent drive and after trying all settings of DCC, etc. My first impression (first day), that the car was unstable (or gittery) at high speed (herself had the same impression)) but this settled very quickly in the following day or so.

Whether its the P7's or not, I immediately noticed increased road noise over my previous Seat Exeo ST 170 Sport but got used to it, noticed it again after getting back in following receiving a loan Octavia for a few days , I do hope a change of tyre will decrease this but have learned to live with it. The Superb is a very comfortable and sure footed car, it is a perfect long distance cruiser and where the car comes into its own, so wait till you do more than 10miles

Maybe there are few frogs in the Superb vice the VRS;)
