1.5 SEL first gear issue.

If you read the post before the post with the video you will see the question asked.

Point being VW Engineers are and were just messing about to get the emissions required under testing, and the figures needed for tax bands.

Be that petrol or diesels.

Ooops, my bad, regarding the Ateca being diesel - apologies. I'm sure there is a place for alternative fuels for small passenger vehicles, but I can not see JLR selling many petrol (or electric/hybrid) Range Rovers, or Porsche selling many Cayenne's in the near future. Any UK Government will talk the talk about providing the infrastructure to support EV's, but where will the money come from? I was in Hong Kong last October when Tesla opened a 50-bay charging location/garage for Tesla owners. Other than London, I cannot see that happening in the UK.

Sorry to go so off-topic.

Thought it was only me that spotted the hesitant DSG DIESEL in the Ateca Honest John video. For a moment I thought I was going mad and it's not even APRIL 1ST yet.

I’m curious if westie38 might like to retract the comment that the video proves the 1.5l unit will kill someone. Not least because when that review was made the 1.5l unit was still in development and the Ateca was using the lauded 1.4 unit as well. So that engine isn’t even in the picture there.

I believe Skoffski posted the vid with the intention of showing that throttle response is something that many customers of VAG vehicles make or break a purchasing decision or that they get a pedal box to help address the issue. It relates to the 1.5 in so far as it could be a compounding factor for the problem that unit has. If you combine low sensitivity throttle response with an bad ECU and or some misbehaving anti stall function then it’s a recipe for kangaroos.

I can’t see it happening either tbh but sooner or later something will happen. I’m not much good with politics but the UK has awful public transport outside of London and main cities and we can’t rely on fossil fuels indefinitely. So at some point they’re going to have to cough up some cash and get it done.

Ways of doing this include introducing a tax on electricity for EV chargers so that it’s more expensive that electricity for your home (but is still cheaper than fuel), they are already cutting massively the grants for electric vehicles. They’re already updating the VED system so that low emission EV and hybrids don’t enjoy free tax anymore. We’re talking about the UK government here remember. They’ll find a way of taking money from you. They’re not about to let their lucrative double dip on fuel come to an end without an alternative revenue source lined up.

Porsche already stopped selling any diesel passenger vehicles and new Range Rover Evoque launched not with  a diesel but a 2.0turbo petrol with 296bhp called the P300 (300PS) for £51,000 if you can afford one of course.:tongueout:

I don’t understand though why it only seems to affect the 1.5l unit. Why not the 1l as well? I know it’s emissions are lower to begin with but they’re not super low for 1l of displacement. Seems to be 1l 120g/km and 1.5l 125g/km? If that’s right then they’re only 1 VED emissions band apart. 5g/km for an additional 50% displacement seems disproportionate. Unless it’s because the 1l is tuned less and the 1.5 much more stringently.

@westie38,  Maybe it is England that is dragging its heals on the infrastructure & the Westminster based UK government.  There are 4 countries that make up the UK.

@Stevieweevie

As to EV Grants .   You can get the UK EV grants, and in Scotland 6 year interest free loans to buy EV Cars, Scooters, Motorbikes,

and grants for commercial vehicles that are different from in England / Wales or Northern Ireland.

Scotland does produce a lot of renewable electricity, or has the capacity to produce, but the generators are paid not to as there is not the demand always or the storage for Electricity that could be getting generated, and not the facilities in enough areas to produce hydrogen.

You have to give the 1.0litre more revs than the 1.5litre so it is only slightly more economical than the bigger engine (which is less stressed) and therefore the emissions are similar. Our 1.5TSi 148bhp Karoq has averaged 45.3mpg over 12,500 miles with a best of 63.2mpg figures which I suspect would be hard to achieve in the 113bhp 1.0Tsi version.

Thanks everyone - changing from my 1.5 to a 2.0 diesel looks like the only way forward, the fix may still be months away, if indeed it actually works.

I suppose you've got to stick with Skoda as no other manufacturers dealer would touch it!

I suppose all the other manufacturers have also heard of the "characteristic" relating to the 1.5TSi EVO VAG engine with it being used in so many different VAG products.:x

Probably down to the 1.5 having ACT and achieving those figures running on 2 cylinders.

ACT only kicks in under very specific circumstances when cruising, unlikely to have anything with kangarooing or hesitation. It works seamlessly on the 1.4tsi ACT  CZEA engine.

xman I think he was refering to the ACT making the 1.5Tsi engine more efficient despite its larger displacement because it can run on 2 cylinders above 1,400rpm whilst not going uphill of course. When I drive the wife's Karoq I find it is sometimes best to stay in 3rd gear in town and revs above the crucial 1,400rpm point to keep in ECO mode rather than change up to 4th gear and labour the engine which will result in all 4 cylinders requiring more fuel to maintain speed. Seems to work for me because I nearly always achieve over 50mpg driving her car.

I rang Skoda late Yesterday as I STILL don't have the promised replacement car (until a fix is available).

They said a fix will be available sooner than thought so they don't need to take a car off the forecourt, instead Enterprise will be supplying a vehicle and should be in touch shortly.

If my hire car does indeed turn up does that mean a fix is maybe under a month away? interestingly they did say if the fix didn't work we will then look at the other options open....didn't sound that confident, interesting times ahead!

Just call and message Skoda UK Customer Services this morning and tell them to have the Courtesy Car with you by this afternoon and your car uplifted.

Unsafe car, you are not prepared to drive it, or call Skoda Assist.   They are messing with you.  Enterprise is a National Company with thousands of cars ready to day for Hire.

http://skoda.co.uk/about-us/contact-us

VW Group had a contract with car suppliers because of their Emissions Scandal' and the need to have the fix carried out.

Thousands of 'Management cars' all around the UK by the number they apparently sell as 'Ex Management Cars'.

Just take care the car provided is not one another 'Customer / Owner' rejected.....   There will be plenty of those owned by VW Finance and in the Official Dealership network.  Un-fixed obviously...

I’m currently in a hire car provided by skoda Uk, again not a skoda off the forecourt, I’m in a Tiguan, when I spoke to customer services on Monday she had no update on a fix and didn’t seem that confident on when one would arrive.

I’m to just treat the hire car as my own until I’m told otherwise.

Just had a call.....Got a Tiguan arriving in the next hour and a half. Did your car stay in the dealership or is it on your drive still?

Unfortunately my relationship with Škoda UK has, this week, ascended to high-farce. I should have received a long-arranged phone call from them on Monday morning - which never came, then there followed a succession of excuses and re-arranged calls that always failed to materialise. I had explained to them that, having bought the 1.5 manual Karoq  at the end of last September, I was well-aware of my rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 AND that I had an appointment with my dealer for this coming Monday morning. I really do get the impression that they don't want to speak to me.

I suspect that the folk at Škoda UK are in a complete 'bugger's muddle'; by now, as well as irate customers, they will be fending off questions from the media and the DVSA. I'm so glad that I don't work there.

My car is in the dealership, I took it down and picked the Tiguan up there. It’s staying in the dealership until I hear otherwise, I’m amazed they couldn’t give me a skoda from the fleet they must have, it’ll cost them a fortune renting this Tiguan.

Mine is going to be hogging a valuable space on the drive, we have The Mrs Car, 22 year old's car and the 21 year old's car on top of mine!

They can come and get it, might encourage them to fix it/sort something out if it's taking their storage space up.

I'm not going to want to give the hire car back, auto TDI 4x4 (perfect round here when the weather turns) not allowed 4 x 4 or Auto normally on the company list B)

I like the Tiguan but I actually prefer the interior on the karoq, I miss my reversing camera and heated seats! The 2.0 tdi is a nice engine, it’s obviously a nicer drive as it doesn’t bounce down the road, I can pull off smoothly in it, who’d have thought eh!

Skoda UK are coming to their senses.

Corporate Responsibility if they are aware they have customers with unsafe vehicles out on the road.

The risk of Rod McLeod, or the head of VW UK Managing Director Alex Smith in a Coroners Court, or a Civil Court will not be something they like.

VW Group defending actions against them would be a major issue if their vehicles were to cause fatalities.

Heated seats, fantastic on a frozen morning....Mrs little Corsa has them and a heated steering wheel, only work in the quarter to nine position but nice to have!

It's a right ball ache finding her a new reasonably priced car with those 2 features plus auto which she lists as a must along with extra grunt now She has finally got used to the motorway and finds the Corsa a bit underpowered!  She had done less than 5,000 miles from new  in 8 years (well ex-demo with 255 on the clock) but now has to commute to Trafford Park and back each day so it's time to replace the Corsa!

Once had a VW Jetta as a courtesy car when a clutch went at 11,000 miles on a 2014 Superb and it was an absolute BIT*H to park due to it being the base poverty spec model not even having rear sensors on a £20,000 car.

So is your golf any better?

Does your wife need to guide you in while parking your steed? :kiss:
