Long term effects of disabling stop start

Featured Replies

Just curious if there are any long term effects coming from disabling the stop start system as I know one way its done is by tricking the ecu into thinking the battery voltage is lower than its threshold for stop start. Could this not cause the charging system to try and over charge the battery in an effort to get the battery charged to the level it wants to see?

From my understanding, the change is to raise the battery voltage level that must be met for stop/start to kick in. It doesn't actually change the battery voltage level or the level that the car thinks the battery is at. Therefore no change to the charging procedures for the battery.

Yup, this is it exactly. It’s basically saying to the car “Only run start stop if the battery voltage is higher than this value it will never reach”. It’s one of the few things I plan to change with my OBDEleven as soon as I find the old Android Phone I have knocking around somewhere.

I've done 30,000 miles with mine deactivated via VCDS, no issues.

thanks all just curious as my car was charging at 15v for a while but seems to be ok now

While the weather was really cold?

I still do this manually since my habit is to lock the car as well on start so I press 2 buttons  at once.

+1.... I still do it manually and I don't even think about it anymore. I like the ability to use it every now and again if I get stuck in really bad traffic.

I also press the two buttons on start.

I read elsewhere on Briskoda there is another setting you can alter, and that's the one that stops the auto stop start kicking in if the outside temperature is too low.  Change it to disabled if the temp is below 30 degrees C for instance.

yes only had the car since January

Always used to use it on my Manual  mk7 golf. But since getting the vRS Automatic it had to go.

Then 15V is OK as the charging voltage for a lead acid battery is temperature related.

See Figure 2 here:

Are they lead acid batteries on the vehicles with start stop technology I was under the impression they were AGM style https://www.google.com/url?q=http://pmmonline.co.uk/technical/stop-start-battery-technology-questions-answers/&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwjWitXQ9-baAhWoAcAKHaC9D8sQFggNMAE&usg=AOvVaw2ZEKtkOr3cq1npbyNhBeuV

AGM ARE lead-acid, it's a style of construction but the chemistry is unchanged.

You will buy more fuel unless you're not bothered about your engine whilst stationary at traffic lights. Can't see any benefit to disable it personally, also needs 95% battery charge before stop/start kicks in.

Must admit it was a pain on my 64 plate VRS Tdi DSG because would cut out every time I came to a stop at a roundabout, and then when I reversed into my drive trying to switch from drive to reverse. That's why I selected a manual VRS this time.

AGM batteries do like slightly higher charge voltage.

In the instructions to my CTEK charger it says to use winter mode when charging AGM batteries as it bumps up the voltage a bit.

Jury is out on start stop in terms of engine longevity as the increased wear is now mitigated by better engineering but also, by definition, idling is bad for engines.

Also remember that start stop reduces emissions, the more it happens the less nasties you'll be breathing in while in urban areas.

Just had a message flash up today re Start/Stop Error. Then Orange Coil light started to flash. I was actually in stop start traffic which I'm not usually in. Switched off ignition, then back on again. Coil light went out. Will put OBD11 on it tonight when I get home.

OK, results from the scan: Fault Code P211100 Throttle Actuator Control System- Stuck Open-Intermittent.

And

B202300 - Intermittent-Function Limitation due to active protector function.

Visit to the garage 19th  June.

It sucks with the DSG box. Always press the button.

True... If everyone used it. Also, if it only happens when vehicle is up to running temperature as cold engines produce more emissions. Also the act of restarting will produce a little more in the way of fumes. Ok if stopped for two mins. pointless if, as described by shyVRS425, it cuts out at roundabouts (Potentially dangerous) and when changing from drive to reverse to reverse  in to his/her drive!

Following, mines has an intermittent issue

  • 3 weeks later...

Visited garage today. All they found was the same as my OBD11 “Throttle Actuator Control System- Stuck Open-Intermittent “. And that was all they said. Fault isn’t there at the moment come back in if it reappears. So I have disabled the stop start again and see how I get on.
