Been to look at a vRS today (BK15 ACF)

Featured Replies

Took an afternoon off today to go look at a replacement car for our Elegance hatchback. Pootled away down the A1 - M62 and found my way to Stockport where a really nice looking vRS Estate was for sale. Had a look round, took about 5 minutes to decide it wasn't the one for us, then gave him the keys back.

Faults blatantly apparent were only one key fob working (Kessy, so it even gives you a warning on the dash to replace the battery), rear wiper hanging in bits to the point that using it would've scratched the rear screen, and didn't even get to look under the bonnet...

But most importantly, lifted the spare wheel cover in the boot and everything was soaking wet. This was explained away as having just come back from the valeters so they'd have washed the carpets in the boot. Everything was bone dry, but I could see where the water was getting in over the rubber seal on the right hand side bottom corner of the tailgate. I think either a twisted tailgate or a shunt on the drivers rear corner has pushed something out of shape.

So, looking for a cheapish vRS? Keep looking in my opinion. No doubt it'll all be dried out now ready for some unsuspecting buyer. ;)

Wow, that sounds like a ropey example and best avoided! Hope you didn't have to travel too far.

MOT until March 2019; 71,000 miles on the clock though, ridiculous mileage for a 2015 plate vehicle.

Taxi I'm guessing.

Mine is a 14 plate with 85k on the clock, not all that high for a modern car IMO. The car the OP has viewed sounds a mess and best avoided!

Anything over 10k, possibly 15k, a year will be business use and should be viewed accordingly.

Taxi, courier, that sort of thing, i.e engines thrashed from cold etc.

Or just somebody commuting to work.

Don't be daft. No one is going to spend vRS money on a taxi, and not going to spec full leather heated seats, kessy etc. and ignore sat nav. Back seats looked like they'd not been sat on even.

At 25k miles a year it's not doing stop start driving, it's doing motorway miles all day and that's not a bad life for an engine, shocks and springs, and seat bolsters.

I agree mine has been a company car (I know this as it belonged to Lex Autolease through VWFS before I bought it) but the mileage alone bears no relation to how the car has been treated. My car has never been a taxi, VWFS don’t allow private hire use, it was just a company car doing 25k miles a year with a single driver, it was not a pool car. A good way to get an idea of use is to check through the nav history (if fitted) to look at the kind of places looked up and look at how many phones are on the Bluetooth history. Mine had 3, all with the same name which is the name that matched the original lease paperwork. I have done just over 10k in it since December as that’s just the length of my commute. Not all private buyers do a low mileage, but yes, the average annual mileage is about 10k per year.

Really?

My VRS was sold with 23k on the clock.

The first MOT shows 42k on the clock..........either the new owner has a fantastic commute to his (or her) office every day.  Or he (or she) is using it as a taxi.

It was sold in Rochdale........a taxi is my guess.

Your vRS was bought second hand. Not the same as someone spending money speccing up a vRS from new. But besides, you're guessing again as to who's using your old car for what.

People buy cars and drive them, but just because someone drives a lot of miles a year doesn't mean they're a taxi driver. The days of living where you work are long gone, and people live where they want and drive to work now.

Our Jetta was sold with 145k miles at 8 years old and we did 80k of those in four and a half years. I'm not a taxi driver by the way, just my wife taking kids to dance lessons and going shopping mostly.

To back up Rustynuts, As a self employed Fleet Trainer I do 20k miles a year in my VRS and you will not find a better looked after car. Some of us do a fair few miles as part of our jobs and not as Taxi drivers either.

I'm also going to add, I'm doing in excess of 22,000 miles a year, mainly commuting to work, then my own use.

I can't find my unique specialist skills being required locally, so I have to travel to work. The car is warmed up and driven with care, mainly in eco mode and on occasion I will give it a little push through the bends

Services are never scrimped on or put off because I need to earn a living and no car means no work and that means money.

I do a 32 mile each way commute (with 50% lift share) and some European holiday driving and cover about 15k a year. Probably doing the type of driving that's very good for most engines

I am a construction manager and do 50k a year, picked mine up with 8k on the clock about 8 months ago and I am now on 33k! I will probably be selling mine in a year's time as I don't want it to lose too much value, hopefully it will be worth 12k at 3 years old and about 70k.

As mentioned above, I need my car for work so it will always be looked after. I wouldnt like to drive a vrs as a taxi. It's a little stiff around town. Great for journeys up and down the motorway or over the peak district but can be a little harsh over bumpy city roads

I had a slow nov-jan hence the slightly lower mileage this year but things have picked up. Last week alone I went to Portsmouth, Bridlington, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool!

Colleague got a 67 plate Passat GTE Advance in November. Now on 33,000 miles. Commutes 95 miles each way Mon-Fri :o

Downside to hybrid is it needs serviced every 10k - it's had three already! Oil hardly gets discoloured at all between changes...

That's a big commute. I do quiet like those Passat gte's

That is big! I thought mine at 68 miles each way was bad enough. Again, my specialist skills aren’t required near where I live, but living near where I work is prohibitively expensive, need to commute and save before moving closer.

You might even see him...M60, M56, A55 and A483 is his daily route, I pity him TBH!

So who was selling the car? Was it private / indi dealer / car market or main dealer?

Edited by Guest

Private buyer and 20k miles a year for me as well.

Lee

My Octavia is a motability lease car and as I live in a village with no shops, doctors, or any other amenities it tends to do lots of miles my last 3 motability cars all did about 20k a year just doing hospital visits shopping and getting me out the house so I don't die of boredom.

Only two. And they're specialists who sell their trade based on actually having those particular cars. Hardly a benchmark really.

Well I’m the opposite to many folk I guess.

My max mileage is about 5000 per year.

I use the railway mainly for my commute and work.

My car is detailed more often than required and sat on the drive gathering dust most days.

I wish i could could buy a car off a guy like me. :D

Ha ha. That’s funny. My cars don’t get too much use and are always clean

I think exactly the same ......”I wish I could buy a car off me”.

Hows about making dreams come true.......you buy mine and I’ll buy yours.
