Crikey, that's more than a bit forensic!!!   A couple of months ago my car was cased at 4 oclock in the morning, by a young scummer on a bike, riding up to my car and calling someone to disc

I've worked out where BMW have got their inspiration from, for the new M4 grill

I'm beginning to think 400-499 bhp isn't enough

Future Green option?

They have lost the plot now in Germany. Where are they getting the designers from?

Specsavers.

Sadly not.

They are pretty bad at eye testing & prescribing but they would have given anyone showing that to them a hard slap on the back of the head.

The sad thing is, we will no doubt get used to it and just prepare ourselves for the next shock. Very few cars have remained hideous to my eyes really.

There are exceptions of course

I think BMW are very focussed on the Asian markets. And that in-your-face look is what they like.

But that's a horror show, I couldn't pay real money for a car looking like that not matter how well it drives.

Yes, they love Edwardian looking grilles and walnut/brown leather interiors.  For a country on the bleeding edge of tech, why they have a love affair with the Jags/Rovers of yesteryear is a mystery to me?!?!

Look at the Skoda Superb that's exclusive to the Asian market... it turns out you can make the interior look even more bland and boring than the Euro version, who knew?!

I'm beginning to wonder if putting a numberplate in the middle of this grill will look really odd, especially on certain colours?

I'll see that, and raise fitting one to a side of that grille!

A serious question.

Are front fog lights low down a thing of the past so no longer required, or not required to be low or are they hidden there someplace?

Likely any drivers of them they just need to see or not and a radar can do that job.

Front fog lights are not mandatory.

When they are fitted the law still states that using lights below a certain height when visibility is NOT restricted is an offence, BUT DRLs are an exception covered under later lighting regulations.

Which is how/why low mounted lights can be turned on when visibility is good.

Cheers,   i should have said,

'no longer required on top of the range expensive and potentially quick cars', i did not mean, as in required by law.

I have never seen the law saying using front lights below a certain height when not poor visibility below 100 meters is illegal, vehicles with maker lights along the front lip spoiler are not uncommon.

Just that using Fog lights are illegal when not foggy / poor visibility.

Using lights that dazzle and can annoy or disturb other drivers are something for the police to bother about, and fog lights in the dark when not foggy.

As to police taking action on offensive lighting, they are possibly driving a BMW with exactly such lighting these days.

i know Front Fog lights are not mandatory,

i have had enough without them including Mk2 Favia vRS where Skoda just said they have them and sales adverts still do on used ones.

Loads of threads like this over the past 9 years about Mk2 vRS

Bl00dy joke though when you do not have them in the very worst of foggy conditions.

So surely Halo models of a car from a Prestige car manufacturer will have something that does the necessary.

Well, there used to be a statement in the Highway Code that "using front lights mounted less than 12 inches above the road surface was illegal unless visibility was under 100 yards". If you'd asked, I'd have said you were old enough to have learnt to drive on one of those editions of the HC too.

Bug-ger!

My current M4 doesn't have fog lights. It does have the Icon adaptive headlights though, which are the clever ones powered by Voodoo. They not only swivel with steering also turn each side's main beam off independently once it cannot steer the light far enough away from oncoming or preceding traffic. It seems to work reasonably well as I very rarely get flashed (ooooh missus!-thought I would get that one in first)

Do not miss them at all and have driven in fog/mist several times. No idea if they do anything clever, although I believe they can drop their light output depending on speed and road conditions.

This video is of the prototype electric i4 but it gives an idea of what the M4 will look like. I've been looking at pictures of old cars 20s,30s,40s etc and note (as I'm sure everyone is aware) they nearly all had huge grills, but we tend to forget this. Maybe with Audi and BMW both chasing the huge grill look (why does an electric car even need one :D ) we will get used to them after all and wonder what the fuss was all about?

the issue isnt, imo, the huge grill itself.

its the fact that that bmw huge grill is god awful looking, at any size...

It actually doesn't look too bad on the latest X5.  The 1 series and even the new 8 series are a complete mess and the photographs don't do the ugliness justice.

A journalist summed it up quite nicely recently by saying BMW's new front grill looks like someone has dropped their trousers and bent over because it looks like someone's butt cheeks.

Many people would find that appealing

So somebody has done a render based on the new M4 render and........

I think the big nostrils look better  :o  Sorry to say I can see the Gerry Anderson Thunderbirds look is growing on me and I can see it working on the road. It's going to take a period of adjustment, but yep, I think it's a sleeper that's growing on me
