Sat Nav Update Misery

Featured Replies

That's 100% an MIB1 Amundsen unit.

If the SD card you have is ~16GB in capacity it will not work with this unit.  You've been sold the wrong one.

  • If, and only if, you have an Amundsen MIB2 Satnav, with a 14.8 GByte SD Card, then the procedure to update it with the 2018/2019 maps is as follows -    Download link   http://infotainment-c

  • Reformatting the card will not (absolutely will not) remove the data required by your sat nav to allow the card to work. You do not need to "Update" the unit with the new data on the SD card.

  • If you’re worried about formatting the card, just delete the ‘maps’ folder then replace it by unzipping the new download. It probably takes longer to delete the folder than to format the card but you

Interesting, my next question is the image below shows the 2 unzipped files using 7.08 GB on this SD card. What about next year, or the following years' updates. Not a lot of room left for these on an 8.0 GB SD  card, or are Skoda expecting me to fork out for a new SD card each time the capacity is too small?

You need a card with part number 5E0 051 236 for your unit. The letter which follows will dictate the maps version the card came with, but shouldn't be relevant as you're going to overwrite the maps anyway.

What is the cluster size on that SD card?

Mine originally used 16KB clusters and the 2017 maps wouldn't fit, so I reformatted it to use 4KB clusters and even the 2019 maps fit with space to spare.

Many thanks for your efforts. I have forwarded this thread to my Camberley garage who say their Mastertech discussed with Skoda UK and were advised that the part they sent was the correct one for my vehicle, bearing in mind they had the Reg. and VIN No. I'm seeing them on Friday with the SD card still loaded with the unzipped new map download, as well as a USB with the same unzipped files, so they can try and resolve this issue quickly, I hope.

I have even removed the unzipped radio icons file from the SD card to ensure this was not interfering with the car's ability to read, still not reading it. Based on what you have said and the multiple attempts I've tried I'm inclined to agree with you guys

Petrol Dave: As you'll see from earlier dialogue, I've had no problem loading the 7.09 GB data to the 16.0 GB SD card in all 3 formats mentioned earlier, as to cluster sizes associated with those format, I've no idea.

If the master tech had to ask Skoda then I guess he's been given wrong advice. It's possible that the later 16gb card will work but unfortunately I don't have an  mib1 unit in the workshop to test an MIB2 card in. In the absence of such test I'm inclined to believe that it won't as it's specifically listed as an mib1 card for an mib1 unit, and an MIB2 card for an MIB2  unit in etka.

Just a thought, you didn't get a card with the car when you bought it I presume.

Yes, it had a 4GB Skoda SD card as was supplied originally with the vehicle, which had not had the sat nav updated. It was fine until I tried to upload new maps in Aug 2018 as per the simple instructions. The card (after a diagnostic) I was told could not accommodate the new updates, hence purchase of a new SD card.

Have you tried reformatting the SD card with a 4KB cluster size (after saving a copy of the original data on my PC). This greatly reduces the space wasted by the hundreds of tiny files in the update and in many (most?) cases lets the newer maps fit.

That worked for me when the newer maps wouldn't fit.

You didn't go to Sparshatts did you? They gave me completely wrong advice on what SD card I needed when they failed to supply one when I bought my Octavia second hand from them in July 2016.

Skoda didn't do a 4gb card as far as I'm aware.

That's my understanding too.  MIB1 units (such as markie1810 has) were supplied with an 8GB card.

Skoda managed to release an update which was too big to fit on the card unless it was reformatted with 4kB clusters, as suggested by PetrolDave.

I strongly suspect that the original card and a 4kB cluster size will fix all of the issues.

It MAY interest some to know that, following my first post which was met with more or less resistance depending on the loyalty to Skoda vs, how technology works, or should work...
I found the quickest, easiest and most reversible way to update the MAPS is JUST to copy the maps of choice, in my case, the UK, ONLY to the original SD card from the unzipped file downloaded from the site.

The damage caused to my sat nav from the different ways the post codes are handled or stored from the original to the updated system (The original needed a space in the post code and the new system falls over at the space so you go from a sat nav full of locations to a sat nav full of "errors"), was just too much and comments like "Mine works fine", are unhelpful to ignorant.

If ALL you need are map updates, then the maps folder has all you need.
The rest of the data on the card just seems to be there for historic reasons,  laziness, or the lack of understanding by Skoda employees charged to update a system they don't understand.

That sites like This exist with the blind leading the blind with not one Qualified Skoda employee with actual computer literacy or programming skills shows the
low regard Skoda consider after care leaving the support of technical systems to armchair experts.

That NO skoda agent will update your sat nav demanding you do it, shows a cavalier attitude or at least prior knowledge that the harm the updates can do.
My local agent flatly refused to do it though as I don't (now) trust them to sit the right way on a toilet, I take my VRS to a local garage who seems to know far more about my VRS than the local agent does who can't do a thing to my car unless there is a fault code for it...

If your downloaded update does harm to your sat nav you can bet your life that Skoda will wash their hands of it as YOU did the damage, and those here who tell you that their system updated with no issue will be falling over themselves to tell you as much, as if that fixes anything.....

The space a comprehensive "How To" PDF would take up on an already bloated SD card would be insignificant and a lot more helpful than the owners manual.
It would also have the advantage of being "current", but, that requires someone to take ownership of the issues and that isn't about t happen.

IF I offend those who genuinely try to offer help and support, I sincerely apologise.
To the "google it", "Mine worked fine" and "You're doing it wrong" brigade, I most certainly do not.
