What have you done to your Superb III today?

Thanks Gregor, great instructions. Any recommendations for an affordable OBD scanner I can buy to clear the faults?

For Skodas (and VAG in general) OBDeleven is probably the best, as it does coding and adaptations and more detailed VAG specific fault codes. It has a dedicated hardware device. It's pricy, though.

Carista is pretty good too, and also has a dedicated hardware device, and does a lot of the above VAG specific stuff (and specific stuff for other marques too). "Car Scanner" is an iPhone app that I used before I got OBDeleven, and it has similar functionality in that it can do coding. But it's not as widely used OBDeleven, so there's less support for it on the internet. I used it with the Carista dongle, but it should work with any good OBD ii device. Advantage is that unlike Carista and OBDeleven, it's a one time purchase rather than a subscription for the app.

OBDeleven, Carista and Car Scanner will let you configure things on your car like having the rear lights on with your DRLs and loads of other stuff.

If you just want basic OBD fault code reading and clearing, then an app like DashCommand and a bluetooth scanner like this would do. Don't get a WiFi one. Bluetooth is better because you'll still have you phone's internet connection if you connect via Bluetooth, where as if you connect via WiFi, you won't. And if you're diagnosing a fault, you'll want your internet connection.

But I'd personally say that OBDeleven is worth the investment because it's as thorough as you can get on VAG cars without going all out and running VCDS on a laptop..

Complete 60000 service done today :

- Engine oil + filter change

- New air filter

- New cabin filter

- New wipers (front + rear)

- DSG6 oil + filter change

All DIY 😎😁 !

I plan to write a "How to guide" for the DSG6 oil change, but I may need some help for technical translation.

@J.R. Would you mind my asking to you per PM? I know you have very good skills in French. ;)

Thanks in advance.

No problem if its translating from French into English, I can do it the other way but ideally one should translate into and not from ones mother tongue.

Pictures paint a thousand words

@J.R. Thanks. I'll send you a list of french to translate into English. :)

@Danoid. There will be pics, for sure, but sometime, it's better to write explanations to go with the pics. ;)

Paid £725 for a new water pump and thermostat housing to be fitted.

5 hrs labour. 66reg 280. 65000miles.

Had had a coolant leak since before last November. Dealer service didn't notice the level was at the bottom of the possible range or top it up. Been Topping up with proper coolant as required once a month. It increased a couple of weeks ago to needing a bit more and I could see 'wet' against the block but nothing hitting the ground ever.

Local garage at £60 p/hr. They'll be servicing it from now.

It is a common problem in all engines.  Skoda knows it and if it is out of warranty it helps with discounts on the invoice.  I have worn it for the same thing last week and have not seen anything.  38k kms.  190 TDI 4x4.  Time will tell, but if you lower the level, you either drink it or throw it away.  A Vag error that the customer pays for.

  • 4 weeks later...

Upgraded the pedals, and fitted some nice OEM Prestige mats.

I know you only see the pedals for a second or so as you get into the car, but for that second the view is now much improved.

The mats are way nicer than the 3rd party crap that came with the car. Luxurious!

The delivery arrived from Kopacek in a TV box. The kids were very disappointed when I opened it up, but I was delighted!

Is it upside down? There were no instructions, and it went on easy this way.

Corrected, thanks to @MartiniB’s eagle eye.

I had to glue the bloody accelerator peddle in place as it kept falling off…

Anyone know where one can get the matching footrest and, preferably, not at a ridiculous cost?

Take it the footrest fits the automatic then as kopacek say only tested on manual

Thanks going to order one

Finally changed the screeching rear wiper. Standard Bosch everyone is using as replacement. A tenner well spent.

Took a few seconds to get off and another few more to get on. Can't believe what the dealers want for a replacement.

Picked up the Sportline today after its fifth annual service, hence my fifth annual post.

Pros:

The Marshall Škoda dealership in Croydon has been very easy to deal with, from sale to after-sale servicing. Very pleasant people, well organised and, considering Covid, reliable.

I got a very detailed printed description of exactly what was done and what was not done. I even got a video sent to my mobile three hours after I delivered the car showing it on the rack, the camera moving under to show the tyres, dampers, exhaust, etc. and that all was well. That's a first.

I got a call to say the job was done and how much it would cost, which was the same as when I booked the job in. All in all, painless, and cheaper than the fourth year service. £234.00.

Cons:

I was charged for replacing the battery in my key fob, which would have been fine, except I changed it myself two months ago. I asked if they checked the condition of the car battery, which is the same one since new. They said, oh, the battery gets checked in the sixth year. WTF? On the detailed work sheet, the battery was checked, but the condition not noted. It does start up first crank even when it's been sitting for a couple weeks in the cold. Do I replace a five-year-old battery now, or wait for it to fail? (Got to pay for the service first...)

I asked them to check the top window trim on the near side doors, which has been popping up. This has been a recurring problem. They took two annual services to finally replace (successfully) the off side window trim, but this time they said that they couldn't see a problem. Indeed, since the weather turned colder, it has ceased to be a problem. The next time it pops up, I think I'll resort to a tube of silicone glue.

The eight-mile drive from my house to the dealership at 7:30 am this morning took an hour. The drive home at noon today took longer. I have a respected mechanic literally around the corner from my house that does VAG cars and MOTs. Since the car is well out of warranty and "goodwill" is probably (definitely) a stretch, I really don't know what's stopping me taking the car to my local from now on...

I have to say, this car still drives like the day I drove it home five years ago. Mind, I put 1,007 miles on it last year. 2K miles the year before, but 6K miles in 2018 when we drove to Sicily. There's only 20K on the car.

I've gotten used to the size and don't even notice it anymore. I could house a refugee in the boot. As often as I scan the new car articles, I think this car is a keeper, at least until the council gets my area wired up for electric vehicles that have to park/charge on the street. So, I'm guessing 2024. Might even have to be a Škoda.

@freelunch the last time I took my car for service at Marshalls Harlow, got pretty much the same video walkround and they fixed the trim issue. Car was under warranty then.

But trim issue has came back again weirdly. Was the second time I used them but one thing has made me switch to a VAG specialist (barely any cheaper to be honest) and that is I saw on the service notes, there was a measurement of tyre thread, of my spare tyre. 5mm.

Yea right, I don't even have a space saver. And it's hand written, not like someone just entered it copy pasta on a PC. Can't trust them like that..

I recently swapped my standard rear discs and pads to EBC greenstuff pads and EBC discs.

My originals had only 25k miles on them but the pads were nearly worn through and the discs looked horrendous (like they all seem to).

I've only covered around 80 miles since replacing them but so far they're excellent.

The caliper carrier bolts were not the best fun to remove! The lack of space on my 272 involved a few swear words on my part 😂

X-Ice Norths replaced with Hakka 8s in the same size (215/55R17) Friday. Car drives better now, though the tyres really are obviously noisy.

Snow when I got home last night - that was a revelation how good the grip is. Also 5.3l/100 on the trip home ain't too shabby for a half-full car (full set of tyres + rims in the boot) and winters on but summer limits, so lots of 100km/h where shortly it will be 80.

Pretty happy with the bi-xenons though more light at the end of the beams would be good (which is why I'm currently looking at extra lights).

Today I replaced the timing belt, water pump, idlers, aux belt, coolant bottle and coolant.  Very satisfying once it was finished and the engine was running.  That first start up is always tense!  Anyone attempting yourself, the top belt cover is a pig to get off, clearly designed to be fitted as the engine was being built, not to be messed about with afterwards.

Nothing done on my Superb directly. But I've just been finishing this How to guide:

Enjoy ;) !
