LED fogs testing

Featured Replies

I've tested some different bulbs against each other... Here's the an H16 4300K super bright. There's are slightly more expensive. 20180921_101418.thumb.jpg.77981a6aebc3e58bf0f44c990f34c546.jpg20180921_101424.thumb.jpg.3d09994574974de17d0ab4b7f5ca0c7b.jpg20180921_101555.thumb.jpg.3115e6d1902fd1966d1ebf02dd697154.jpg20180921_101543.thumb.jpg.5d387fcd55b28faed1887479c65673c2.jpg20180921_115045.thumb.jpg.b4aa2cfa7d92bd5720267432ffcb6ea7.jpg

Four different bulbs including the original, from left to right. COB LED H8 4500k, high quailty halogen H16 4500k, original H16 4000k, and super bright 4300k LED20180921_114916.thumb.jpg.94ff3561d1dced2f2d3a6700becd7da8.jpg

The lug sizes are similar, H8 has about 1mm more on the lug at 8 o'clock. Easy to modify with a dremmel.

Modified H8 to fit H16

H16 COB LED, if you are buying make sure it's JP and not 5202, the latter is an Audi fitment.

It's not clear from your images, but with the LED bulbs does the position of the LED chips line up with the filament in the halogen bulbs when side by side?

This is key for the light to be usable and not ruin the beam pattern when installed in reflector units. The Osram and Philips LED fog bulbs are crazy expensive, but they do line up with the halogen variant so the beam pattern should be similar.

yes the COB Led one on the left is the exact same height, the one on the right is 4 mm lower but has an extra LED projector on the end. I'll test them in the evening in-situ if it doesnt rain tomorrow.

Interesting

look ok forward to the insitu pics.  Are the LED bulbs better than the halogen?

  • Author

they are visibly brighter and should last much much longer, dont generate anywhere near the heat and use less power.

Main thing I can see with my led ones are the light is crisper. Plus they fit in well with the xenons and the DRL's, as supposed to having the old 'yellower' fogs

Any chance you can add some Philips X-treme ultinon led fogs in to the mix?

Or perhaps a clone of them which are somewhat cheaper: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Brand-new-LED-fog-6000K-H8-H11-H16-LED-fog-valve-X-treme-Ultinon/32611184356.html

im only testing 4500K LEDs as these are not a colour match for the vRS HIDs, 6000K = blue/white

I'll take a picture of them tonight, but I feel they don't look too bad in comparison

How do the LED's handle the dimming feature of cornering fogs?

Do they stay on until they reach a voltage threshold and then switch hard off or do they dim?

The dimming feature is done using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) not voltage reduction, so works OK with LEDs

these are some 6K leds you can see the colour difference blue and daylight white, this is what im trying to find the best LED in the correct colour. hopefully i can get some comparisons tonight, it was too wet yesterday

I don't believe they fade like the halogens do when using them for conerning. I think it's a hard on/off with LEDs in there.

Yep, that's what I thought.

Depends n the led driver even with PWM. You sometimes get annoying flicker as the car tries to dim and then a hard off. Can be distracting.

mine just go on or off with all the leds ive tested.

Depending on the chip which is used on the leds will depend on how much they can dim. Our DLR's dim and they're LED. They're either on daytime or nighttime setting.

There isn't usually much scope for dimming. When they reach a certain voltage, they just go off, so you couldn't take them down very far.

Im mainly looking for brighter fogs for the occasions that they are useful / required.  Ive got the Osram Night Breakers in mine and they arent really bright enough IMO - They are H8 and so 35w - If I could get an H11 in they are 55W.  Im wondering if an H11 can be modded to fit an H8 or is a high quality LED H8 the way forward.

As promised, a few photos of my led fogs. Hard to try and not get a glare from them, as they are quite bright.

From the close up one, you can see it's marginally bluer, however it's a vast improvement over having halogens.

Look good - is that an H8 bub then?

Yep. H8 bulb butchered to be turned into a h16 bulb. I say butchered loosely, just a case of trimming the positioning mounts.

Picture has a h16 bulb on the left and h8 on the right. You can see the slightly larger mounts.

Are they easy to change on the vrs or have I read something daft like the whole bumper has to come off to get at the spotlight back cover?
