Skoda Fabia TDI Flashing 'Glow Plug' Light

Featured Replies

I am the proud new owner of a Skoda Fabia 1.6 SE TDi (2011).

The glow plug warning light has started to flash on some recent trips. On those occasions, I have not noticed the 'engine fault workshop' warning, but I believe 'Limp Mode' was engaged - if 'limp mode' limits the revs to below 20 or 25k.

So what to do? Any advice? I understand it could be one of several problems (brake light, exhaust gas pressure sensor, EGR, etc), but it would need to diagnosed, obvs, using a VCD to read the error code, or something like that.

I read on another thread here there may be folks around who have the necessaries (a VCD) and might be willing to run the test for "beer vouchers". That would be good. I'm in the Matlock area.

Thanks.

Welcome.

Before doing your own diagnosis, has your car had the VW Group Emissions fix, so the new Engine Management and the Flow Device fitted,

so that your car had 24 months of the Trust Building Guarantee from it being carried out meaning you could have Skoda pay to have the diagnosis carried out and any remedial work carried out maybe?

Thanks, Offski.
I have just checked using the link you provided and the answer was (per the screenshot attached). A service action is available for the vehicle. But should I have this done?

(MOT was passed recently.)

I would not have it done.

But first find out your issue now, see the expense if any resolving the fault, or parts then maybe consider to you want to have it done.

Study the subject first as there are may threads on the subject, including in this section.

1.6TDI CR owners will be along with help for you hopefully.

Up-date: discovered my brother-in-law has a suitable diagnostic device. We get "Error code P0403 exhaust gas recirculating control circuit"

Hi Parkino,

Have you tried using one of the diesel fuel additives which help keep everything clean?  I use Millers Eco Power Plus (made in Brighouse), there's also a range of additives offered by www.wynns.uk.com , or Redex, or Forte supply extra strong stuff that the garage trade use.  As Offski says, others on here with your engine type will be better placed to advise.  What mileage has the car done?

Accuracy.

@RichardatWakefield Thanks.

I haven't tried anything yet. I'd like to hear more about additives. (Earlier this morning I made a short trip and the light didn't appear. So I'm inclined toward loose wire/fuse issue. But I'm concerned that the fault will be causing the system to get dirty.)

The car has clocked just over 80k.

A good clean of the EGR might sort out your problem but apparently its a pig of a job to get to and in the end it might need replacing anyway.

If you are feeling lucky you could take your car for the software update and then your EGR will be covered under warranty (providing they don't figure out its faulty before they flash the ECU). The only downside to this is your car might experience other issues due to the update so you might need to get somebody to roll back the software but this is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for a new EGR

The electronics on the EGR on these fail most of the time and no end of cleaning will not sort it out! Had exactly the same issue with mine. £500 later from a independent skoda specialist and its been fine ever since. Dont try and do it yourself, they are a pig!!

@ttalps2000 Right, thanks. I wasn't going to be doing anything myself, that's for sure. I've had it less than three weeks so the dealer has agree to look at it. I imagine they'll attempt to clean rather than replace, so we'll see how that goes. The fault is intermittent so it may be sticking. Thanks for the info on the cost of replacement - I just spoke to a local skoda specialist and they quoted £700-800.

They used an electric motor on them rather than vacuum like the older systems. My specialist used a re-con unit with a 12 month guarantee. Genuine VAG one fitted was around £700-800 so is about right.

Fuel wise i get 55-60mpg on a 25 mile commute each way each day. Mainly motorway but usually around 50-60mph in traffic. As said above, untill it is nice and hot the MPG wont increase much over 45mpg from my experience.

Demand a replacement unit not a clean!

When the codes were read on mine, on a generic code reader you will get the egr failure code. On VAG and most bosch decent systems you should also get a "low signal code"
