Think the big difference this year is that the Merc is not eating tyres in a few laps like before, which really helps during the race being able to stay out longer get a good lead and not having to worry about the undercut from Ferrari and Red Bull particularly at Monaco.;)

The undercut could have worked at Monaco unless Bottas was used to slow the opposition before the planned stops.  The safety car made life easier in that respect

The same as every year then?

Renault qualified ok but only managed 2 points in the race and clinging onto 8th place in the constructors just.:tongueout:

Well, I think Vercrashen should have had more than a 5s penalty, since that was both an Unsafe Release and Causing an Avoidable Accident.

. . . and should have been called in to serve that penalty?

Agree personally caused Bottas puncture and ultimately second place in the race. Pit lane drive through would have a fair penalty IMHO.

I don't get the point of these "add the time at the end of the race" penalties so early in the race. (fair enough if it's the final 2 laps etc)

If you've badly affected someone else's race enough to warrant a penalty, chances are that (probably except Monaco) by the time you finish the race you could be 5 seconds ahead of them anyway. It seems only fair that your race should be affected as much as the poor guy you hit.

Maybe they should add +1 second to the penalty for every lap that you stay out instead of coming in to serve it ? or make it a certain stop/go time if you go in, or double that if you want it to be added on to your race time ?

Sobering thought Ferrari 139 points (both drivers) after 6 races and Lewis (on his own) 137 points. Demonstrates how far off the pace the red team are.

But are they that far off?  They've been clearly fastest at 2 of the 6 races so far.

It's seems this year they have a "diva" as Mercedes described their own '17 (and to some extent '18) cars.

When their set-up hits the sweet-spot like in pre-season, or like Bahrain or Baku, its as fast and sometimes faster than the Mercedes.

After a few years of this, Merc and Hamilton now seem to be used to doing damage limitation and maximising results when their car isn't perfect, Ferrari aren't.

Based on the last couple of seasons it could all turn around. Ferrari had the better of the first half in each of the last two years but lost out in the second.

Here's hoping they and RBR improve a little and make the races more fun.

A bit of light entertainment:

I never watched this before:

f**k me!

No wonder no-one's got near that time in 20 years!!

The camber nearly spat it off the road hundreds of times...

WOW!

How about this:

My favourite Monaco clip:

Back when F1 on TV was free. Ben Edwards and John Watson were a great commentary team too...

V12 noise, four wheel drifts.

I still remember watching this session live during my lunch break at the NAAFI.

Bergers lap above was over 14 seconds slower than this years pole, but it looked so much more fun.

They banned F1 cars from the speed challenge after that as it was getting a bit scary.

Strange that a professional team can't run an F1 car in the timed event when they let amateurs run even less suitable machinery flat out. I'm thinking of the spectacular Penske Indy car and Group C Jags that still take part. Heidfeld did look like he was very close to a huge crash the whole time to be fair though.

Gasly dismisses rumours about his future as "bull****", and points to a meaningless stat to show how he's improving - namely that he finished within 10 seconds of the winner at Monaco (conveniently ignoring the fact that he was on fresh soft rubber and Hamilton was driving as slowly as possible to win).

Clutching at straws?

Rumour has linked Hulk to the RBR seat too.

Ferrari should be fast in Canada with 2 long straights so no excuses regarding qualifying. Let us see if they mess it up again.

So Honda, with all this massive progress you've been apparently making, how come 3 of your 4 cars are slower than  all the Renault-powered ones this morning?

That question comes from a Mr Marko of Kitzbuhel.

Looking very ominous after FP1 if you aren't in a Mercedes.

FP2 all about Ferrari. Leclerc-Vettel 1-2

...oh and now ALL the Hondas are slower than all the Renaults. What's that about?

...and Hamilton hit the wall.

Ferrari further ahead in FP3.  Mercedes finally going to be beaten?

New spec Merc engine blows up as well...Stroll getting his 6 race old one back.

Wait until Merc turn the boost up for qualifying then see Ferrari 0.5second slower than pole time.:tongueout:

Pole sitter 0.5 faster than last years pole!

Renault qualify P4!!

Exciting that.
