Article from Parkers' about diesels in the upcoming London pollution zone (ULEZ)

Featured Replies

I've posted this complete as it could impact most of the diesel drivers in this forum.

(From Parkers' newsletter here)

Drivers of diesel company cars registered before September 2015 might be charged a £12.50 daily rate to enter a large part of the capital from 2019.

If confirmed, the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) will also apply to central London, meaning affected vehicles will attract a £25 levy for going into the heart of the capital once the Congestion Charge has been taken into account.

Who will be affected?

Anyone who has a diesel company car which fails to meet Euro 6 emissions standards and is not set to be replaced before 2019. This means that all pre-September 2015 diesel cars could be affected by the £12.50 levy. A petrol-engined car in comparison has to meet Euro 4 emissions standards, generally applying to those after 2005.

Some cars sold before this date were Euro 6 compliant, however, and as such will be exempt from the charge. To find out if your car qualifies, contact the manufacturer of your car.

The extended ULEZ has a proposed introduction date of 2021, and will stretch as far out as the North Circular and South Circular roads.

Also note that as of October 2017, Pre-Euro 4 vehicles will be liable for an additional £10 charge for entering the existing London Congestion Zone. However, this only applies to much older pre-2006 vehicles.

What should I do if my car doesn’t comply to Euro 6 standards?

First of all, click here to double check at the Vehicle Certification Agency. This will confirm whether your vehicle is Euro 6 compliant or otherwise.

If it definitely isn’t, consider how often you drive into London and whether it’s enough to warrant replacing your company car early.

If it is, approach your fleet manager and let them know that you’re considering an early change in preparation for the expected ULEZ expansion in 2019.

Will there be any exemptions?

All residents living in the ULEZ will be granted a three-year sunset period with a 100% discount until October 2021 – provided they have registered with TfL.

Vehicles that have a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicle' tax class will also be granted the same exemption until 26 October 2025, provided their vehicle doesn't change tax group. UK-registered vehicles do not need to be registered with TfL, but those registered outside the UK do.

Unless the vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards, Blue Badge holders will need to pay the charge from 8 April 2019.  Find out more here.

London-licensed taxis are exempt and are subject to a 15-year age limit.

So just diesel company cars?

The article was aimed at company car drivers, but the charge will apply to all non-Euro 6 diesels.

no fabia VRSs or mk1 octys without coughing up ;)

My diesel Vitara was registered before the Sept 2015 date but luckily is Euro 6 compliant. I wonder how long it will be before it gets clobbered by Euro 7 or whatever they come up with next :(

The London Mayor this morning keeps saying on the media round 'Check your car & it very likely is compliant'.

There must be lots of diesels that are pre 2016 that are not.

What a Mickey take with the Leaders of the Local Authorities that border the ULEZ and refuse to have signs erected in their council / tax payer land.

What's crazy is when TFL puts a ULEZ camera up at a set of traffic lights that causes all the non-compliant cars to take a detour past the local primary school in order to avoid the camera.

What the Mayor should be doing, is first putting a ULEZ camera outside the primary school to prevent a rat run, and only then putting one up at the local traffic lights.

Children deserve clean air outside their school, not a rat run for dirty diesels.

I saw a now deleted post on Twitter this morning. A chap so annoyed that he was having to sell his classic Citröen DS because of ULEZ.

He deleted it after being told by many people that as it's from the 1960s and therefore over forty years old and ULEZ exempt.

How many more Muppets haven't bothered to check the facts before whinging online about it.

The Lady on the Channel 4 news is 79 next year and her husband is 80 and friends from the coast will not come to London to visit them & pay £12.50 to do that.

In their older than 2005 petrol or pre September 2015 diesel obviously.

£6.50 a gallon or so to run vehicles, maybe with very good fuel economy and certainly as good if not better than newer ones.

Proper toddler politics that will only hurt their own residents. With any luck it will bite each and every one of them.

It is not just Tories it is the Labour party that are going to appease voters by dropping the Green stuff, well in London.

All the Labour Mayors fault, not the Ex London Mayor & Prime Minster that knocked about in old cars.

The same carry on with house building in England now, forget about pollution and waste water just get the houses up & change any regulations current or recent that were there to help the environment.
