Felicia 2001 1.9 D Temperature Problem

Featured Replies

Hi to all Skoda lovers. I just recently purchase Skoda Felicia Diesel 1.9, 47 kw, 106.455 km, in garage spent most of time. On test drive, all was great, few weeks later, I noticed that a Temperature for engine coolant is hoovering around 110C. So, I started to investigate, and I am stuck... Any help is much appreciated. The conclusions are:

1) With laser thermometar I measured temperature of engine block in range between 105 to 110C.

2) Fan kicks in only sometimes at temperature above 110C.

3) I changed Thermal Sensor, put original with green belt as it was.

4) I changed Thermal Switch on a fan, nothing changed.

5) Both hoses from and to radiator gets warm so thermostat is opening circulation.

6) Sometimes radiator is cold for a very long period of time.

7) All fuses are OK, checked and replaced.

8) During drive, open road, temperature is not falling down, usually goes a little above 110C.

9) There is back flow to the coolant container, so pump is probably working OK, no noises.

10) No building of pressure in hoses or in coolant container.

11) No lose of coolant, all markers that I put is on same spot.

Any idea how to solve this problem?

Regards,

Tsweeyo!

@Tsweeyo - Firstly, you're correct that "normal running temperature" for this engine should be 90C.

Secondly, have you checked that the thermostat is opening properly and fully? Your (6) makes me think that you may have a problem with the thermostat itself, and the engine is being saved by the electric fan.

HI Ken... I will change thermostat, 10€ is part, no problem. Few services that I visited, all repairman said to me that is thermostat is OK. I have one more question, regarding thermostat, I have two options to buy, pictures are enclosed. By chassis number, shops can't really tell which one goes in my Skoda.

Thanks again.

This engine has been in production for so long that you need to be able to identify the part in this specific unit. If the chassis number is returning 2 different stock codes, you'll need to examine the actual part fitted, and I can't do that from the far side of the continent.

Yea, I understand you. :-) Will do. I'll send remarks after I change Thermostat.

Regards and thanks Ken.

Thanks Mr Wino.

I suspect it is either a foreign object before/inside radiator or the radiator itself is clogged.

I don't think much will change by replacing the thermostat. Disconnect and flush back & forth the radiator then flush back & forth the whole cooling system. Have a look at thermostat with that occasion. First you gather evidence then you buy parts.

I've never, literally never, seen a case of this. How is it supposed to have got in there?

Very simple. The thermostat breaks and pieces of plastic/metal flow in there. Very common on Felicia with made in China thermostats. "Literally" never say never.

Is the radiator fan on this car single speed or dual speed?

OK, that makes sense, but in this case the OP may well need a new thermostat anyway. I'd suggest that @Tsweeyo should suspect this if the old thermostat isn't all there!

It should be dual speed but given the fact the OP said the radiator is sometimes cold yet the hoses are warm, it is normal the fan kicked in so late, probably on low speed.

Hi all... thermostat is with me, 750 rsd or little less than 6€. On Saturday morning I will change it. Fingers crossed.

Hi guys...

Thermostat was partially stuck, so temperature is in OK range now.

Can kicks in at around 100C, but rarely temperature gets above 90C.

Thanks all for your time and knowledge.

Regards,
