test drove a fabia 1.2 htp and it sounded soooo fun!!!!! it was nippy enough got to 80 and was still pulling lol! it does sound like a mini race car:rolleyes: . 206 is awful really tacky - suzuki swif looks alright but the interior is naff - yaris would you like to drive in a whale not sure what its like in the interior but they are hideouse! the jazz is alrigth but didnt win car of the year for 3years running, seat ibiza might be an option but proprably less refined, mazda 2 and fiesta hmm dont go there! i would recomend the fabia and its probrably much more safer than the rest of them if any accidents happen, 12volt(brisky member) could back me up on that

I have driven both, when it came to buying a car for myself I chose the Fabia (albeit a VRS) because it was a much nicer car overall.

I drove a Peugeot 206 all round Scotland one summer, I did like it but when I sat in a Fabia I preferred that.

I would suggest you test drive both twice and then make up your mind.

I had the 206 1.4hdi as a company car for three years,170k I would have said no problems, BUT I had one of the very first, I did 6k the first four weeks, and it was first to show the intial faults that Peugeot learned from and rectified.

First was when the power steering motor fell off, all cars recalled shortly after and fix applied,

Second was when I was in the outside lane of a motorway and booted it to get past a lorry the link to the fuel injector bit (plastic)sheared and I came to a coast and standstill with all the Beemers up my *** The lorry put his hazzards on and braked allowing me to coast infront and onto the hard shoulder.AA replaced it with Meccano bits as a linkage and

Again Peugeot recalled and fixed the others out there, I never had any problems after that, mind it had a service every six weeks

What did I find other than the above that I disliked, mentioned in previous postings The wipers are for left hand drive which is very annoying to have a wiper perpendicular in yer face every three seconds

Also the foot pedals are set to the left of centre, so your back becomes twisted especially doing a lot of mileage

The interiour is cheap and seats are like a 74 escort

I quit my last job, and in my new job I had to provide my own transport, a lot of research and I bought the Fabia Diety I wish I had had the choice knowing what I know now those three years ago

Fabia is an excellent motor, very strong and well built, the interior is deceptively large and the seats are supportive and comfy, the interior dash looks a bit dated but it is strong and to be honest I want a reliable cost effective car that does the job, not just look pretty and fall to bits

If you want a pretty car then I find the nieces Yaris pretty favourable allround not so sure about the strength of the body panels though, a bit like the peugeot made of tin foil stretched across balsa wood lol

I am sure you will enjoy the car you buy but I would seriously go for Furby

having had a 206 as a service dept. runaround when i was working @ a dealer...it is the only car which has made me carsick whilst actually driving the damn thing...truly truly shocking car! IMO:thumbdwn: ..can't think of even one good thing to say about them!

if you want reliable as well as great allrounders as has been previously mentioned....Jazz, Yaris or our own lil Fabia are where you want your money to be going. ...Swift is worth a look but it'll still be worth about 2p in 3years time regardless of what 'depreciation index' you may read.

Having bought a Fabia 1.2 estate about a month ago I'm a bit biased, I looked at the Peugeot but didn't even bother with a test drive, too uncomfortable and not that well made. Did try most of the others mentioned in this thread including the Jazz and Yaris, both are good cars but the only one that made me smile whilst driving was the little Fabia. I've covered 1500 miles in the first month of ownership and it still makes me smile when I get behind the wheel. After owning and driving it for a month would I buy the same again if I had a second chance? The answer has to be a very definite yes so this is another vote for the Fabia.

whole heartedly agree. I pushed one of these about as a pool car at work a few years back. it was universally recognised as the worst car on the fleet. Normallly my firm get rid of cars after 3 years / 100K miles. The 206 lasted 5 years and had 50K miles when they got shut. No one wanted to drive the damn thing. Poorly made, slow, cramped and forever in the garage. Merde.

i am going to test drive the cars next week but so far i like the fabia bec of the pedal layout and better quality interior. my main concern is which car is mechanically superior...

THAT'S why they all smell - they're full of SICK!

Fabia without a shadow of a doubt is mechanically superior. It's a VW Polo in drag, so it has VAG build quality with Skoda prices.

One other thing to bear in mind is the aftersales & dealers. Skoda are renowned for having customer service hence the reason the Skoda was 2nd out of 100 IIRC in the JD Power Survey 2005 IIRC. The Pug 206 came 13th from bottom in the same survey and IMO looks stylish but it really is skin deep. A new model is out shortly and the driving position is awful, almost like your sat at the side of the steering wheel . On top of that there is the build quality and residuals that can never match the Fabia's.

You'll also have an excellent online community if you need any help ;)

Haven't got chance to read through the thread i'm afraid, but since having 3 Skoda Fabia's (vrs), I would never go back to citreon or peugeot again i'm afraid :(

Had a 206 GTi, and even though I only had it for 32,000 miles, had loads of problems :( covered under warranty admittedly (except the last one which is why I sold the car ;) ) - things included were such things as part of the exhaust rusting away and falling apart - the connection just before the back box IIRC, just came away. They had to replace the exhaust right through to the CAT (again IIRC) - obviously I could have had it repaired if it didn't have a warranty but it wasn't something I expected to go after approx. 25,000 miles!

Other thing that happened that stands out was the spark plug coil went....

Hope I got the technical bits right! I'm not a very technical person so going off memory! Had a 106 and 205 as well and these both had problems after a year of ownership :( had a xsara and that too was pants (turbo went on it) - I can promise you i'm not a rough driver either (no matter what it sounds like! :D )... as I said, had 3 Fabia's since I joined this forum and not had a problem with any :)

- oh yeah, just quickly read what was written before about the dealerships. again Peugeot (after I had a death defying experience at 65mph in my 106) insisted there was nothing wrong with the car without even looking at it!!!! which just about sums it up.... Skoda dealerships are how you dream of dealerships being, from the start (no hard sell at all!) right through to aftersales where the continue to excel any other type of dealership i've dealt with! (except the local garage down the road but they are independant (dont' deal with a particular manufacturer)

1.2 Fabia all the way no question... i'd even take it back over my current golf if i could. Just such a fun car 10/10 from me

Although i do recomend comfort/ambiente spec or you miss a lot of mod cons on classic.

Hello

I would strongly advise you against a 206, I bought one back in 2001 on the strength of excellent memories, of the two 205's I owned back in the 1980's.

However Peugeot seems to have gone backwards since then, the 206 diesel I purchased had a prominent gearbox whine and dreadful brakes, sinking almost to the floor - they use a crossbar to the master cylinder situated on the LH side of the engine compartment, instead of situating it on the correct RH location for the UK. I thought manufacturers stopped doing that years ago, incidently the brakes from the 205 from the 1980's were set up correctly for RHD.

Add these problems to a very poor driving position and tiny pedals, it was no surprise I could not stick it for more than a month, I was happy to take the

Have you thought of Fiats Grande Punto ? The reviews are very good (41/2 stars at Parkers) and seems better made than previous Fiats. 1.2 is around £7600, 1.4 around £8500 and the 1.4 75hp diesel is also around £8500. Both 1.4's undercut the Fabia equivelent by around £1000.

No body even looks for what I bought as a 2nd car.

Bought only for the reason it can be loaded dead easy as it has no boot lip, and it was over a grand less than the dealer should have ben selling it for !!!

Also voted the most comfortable in class
