Dear all

I just noticed a depression in the side-wall of one of my tyres.  It is very slight, and I only saw it because of the way the sun caught it.  I've taken a photo, and also of one of the other tyres for comparison.  All four tyres have only done 8000 miles, and the others are all fine.

Should I be worried?

That certainly doesn't look good. In my view, any tyre abnormality should be checked out by your local tyre dealer.

Tyre wall damage like that could be from a pot hole or going over a kerb.  Needs to be checked properly as it may not be safe - internal damage may be more than what you (and we) can see.

What depression are we talking about? I dont comprehend these pictures.

Appears to be an impact fracture with a slight chance it's a manufacturing defect.  Get it checked as the tyre is weakened in either case.  If it's a manufacturing defect you will be entitled to a pro-rata  defect claim

That needs replacing.. I wouldn't be driving at any speed on it like that.

@Stewart7 - As others, that's not right, and I'm suspecting damage to the sidewall reinforcement. Get it looked at by a competent tyre fitter.

Yes

Continental has a lifetime warranty and insurance against damaged tyres, it’s why you pay premium prices. 

Go to your usual tyre dealer and start by asking nicely 😉

Thanks to everyone for the advice.  I'm going to ask the AA to have a look, but I'll certainly follow up on the continental guarantee.

Meantime, I'll keep my speed right down.

I  cant readily find Continentals Lifetime Warranty and Insurance on tyres.   (Tyres fitted as OEM by Manufacturers.)

They have a Warranty and T&C's

Dear Roottootemoot   A special thanks for this bit of research.

That's great news.  I emailed Continental yesterday to ask about the guarantee, and explained about the indentation, and the photos I took.

I had a reply this evening asking to see the pictures.  I sent the pics and when I hear back, I'll report here.

Even greater news.

I just had a reply from Continental which includes a Service Bulletin from September 2010, so I guess I'm not the first person to ask about these dents.

Cheers, but why is your's the only tyre I've ever seen like this, even though my usual garage fits Barums unless you explicitly order something else?

I don't know Ken, but you do have to look carefully to spot these dents. The tyres were fitted on the car from new.

I've never had Continental tyres before and all the tyres I've ever had, had smooth side-walls.

I can only take what Continental say in their bulletin as gospel.  I get the impression that this build method is fairly new technology, (since 2010 anyway).

It might be new to the market generally, or just to Continental.  Maybe its just Continental's latest method of construction and people started to notice, and ask about the indentations and that's why they had to issue the bulletin.

I'm only guessing here.

Thanks again.But I'm wondering why a dent and not a bulge, as the cord layer is doubled? True obviously, but not instinctive.

Makes perfect sense when you read their explanation, its stronger there so does not expand so much under inflation, I am never concerned about a depression in a tyre, a raised bump, yes that gets removed from service immediately, dont need anybody to look at it or pronounce a diagnosis.

Try think of a bike inner tube.  Once you put the puncture patch on it does not expand in that area at the same rate so is constricted, smaller diameter.
