CRIKEY...One Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty Nine pounds for a litre of diesel...

Glad I drive a petrol !!!!

Having owned the 1.4TSi Superb in 2016 and we still have our 2018 Karoq with the later 1.5TSi with the same power and it has done 28,600 miles it is clear to me that the earlier engine is better than the latest one as any Kodiaq owner will tell you and the torque of the similar powered diesel makes it feel much quicker in gear.

Day 75 and finally it was filled today with £55.32 of diesel which was 49 litres exactly. The maxidot is about 5% optimistic so after another 651 miles (projected range was 935 miles) it averaged 60.39mpg and the average speed for the 16 hours driving was 40mph or 64kph thanks to less traffix over the Xmas period.

60.39 in a big car like that is fantastic!:)

Yeah very pleased with it so far after 1,540 miles bought just 114 litres at a cost of £127.74.

When I was resetting the trip odometer thought I would check when the first service is due and the countdown is 350 days or 9,900 miles so towards the end of 2021 probably. Not bad as it came with 2 services for £79 and was registered in Feb 2020. That would put it around 17,700 miles.

Done just under 200 miles now on the third tank and thanks to less traffic my average speed has been 10% higher at 44mph yet the average economy is still 61mpg and 900 mile range despite most journey's seeing no more than 2C temperatures. This car handles really well for it's size and has less wallow than my 2 previous petrol Superbs from 2016 and 2019 and the back of the car is much firmer than earlier models with good turn-in and corners and roundabouts can be taken at surprisingly high speeds. It is very confidence inspiring and one of the biggest improvements I have noticed on the 2020MY plus the excellent headlights of course.

Plenty of traffic on the roads that just wasn't there back in the March 2020 Lockdown which is confusing and it was already -1.5C before I left for work at 5pm last night but managed an excellent 63.5mpg then this morning at a warmer 0C I got 64.5mpg on the return 27 mile journey. Covered 300 miles on this third tank and showing 635 miles range left in the tank.

Creeping towards that 1000 mile 'goal'. Maybe in the summer when the engine will run more lean.

Yeah tall order during winter. Tonight’s commute in milder 1.5C temps and even better 65.5mpg and range estimated at 942 miles.

Have you worked out what mpg is needed for 1000miles?

Would need to average 69mpg actual for the  14.5gallon tank.

Done just over 2,000 miles now since collecting the car on 17th October and it will be getting a rest for the next week as wife needs a fuel receipt for her Karoq and it needs a few decent runs in preparation for its first MOT on the 25th January. Currently driven about 12 hours on the third tank which is 513 miles and showing 380 miles left in the tank at an average of 42mph and 62mpg on the maxidot. Should be able to get close to the end of the month if I use wife's car for my night shifts.

Well the plan not to use the Superb went out of the window so now done 22 commutes on this tank and thanks to Saturday evening being very mild here in the Midlands managed 75.5mpg and after 598 miles still have 335 miles left in the tank. Probably need fuel at the end of January and checked last year when I had the petrol 272 and spent £136 in January 2020 alone plus £75 in petrol for SWMBO Karoq’ so the total was £211. Will be interesting to see how Lockdown will reduce that total plus am saving £47 per month in finance on the diesel as it was £1,000 less to purchase with similar mileage.

@shyVRS245Where do you go to get your cars remapped?

Did you remap your 2014 Superb FL? If so, was it worth it for MPG improvements?

  • Author

Hi no the 2014 Superb was traded not long after the clutch was replaced under warranty for a 2015 Octavia Vrs Tdi DSG and was never mapped. The only diesel to be mapped was a Mk3 Octavia 2.0Tdi SE which went from 147 to 186bhp and from 246 to 317lb/ft and economy on that car only dropped from 71 to 70mpg on a decent run. All my cars have been done by Ben at AmD in Grays, Essex close to the Mercedes dealership and IKEA. They charge £500 but you can pay interest free over 12 months.

Done 787 miles on the third tank and more than 19 hours driving at an average of 41mph and will fill up in 1 week from now.

Day 106 and third tank of diesel completed after 842 miles and just over 20 hours of driving with 41mph (66kph) average speed. Put 65.21litres in (£76.23 gone up 4 pence per litre since last tank) which works out at 58.72mpg not bad considering the snow and sub zero weather (-1C today). So far over 2,382miles (3,842km) it has averaged 60.43mpg or 21.44km per litre. Fuel used so far 179.21 litres and total cost £203.97. For comparison my previous petrol Superb over 2,077 miles (4 tanks) cost £274.26 and used 227.41 litres of petrol but it did have an extra 210bhp and 4WD.

Are you still missing that extra 210bhp & 4WD?

  • Author

No because now everyone else is moving at the same speed as me whereas before I was frustrated by them moving so slowly. The other day I put my foot down and suddenly found myself doing 90mph in 4th gear so this diesel has enough poke for now.

  • Author

Well the Superb is now parked in the drive until my next day shift on February 18th and it will have done just under 2,500 miles in 4 months because I have been taking the Karoq to work to keep the battery topped up and that has still only done 6,000 miles in the last 12 months with the wife working from home. At this rate the Superb having done just 8,730 miles in its first 12 months will only do 7,500 miles in year two and cost just over £600 per year in fuel at the current rate of use. Our monthly fuel bill is less than half it was a year ago thanks to Lockdown.

Thanks that's the same Evo engine as my Superb albeit they were using the Estate but 1,250 miles is still impressive.

Can't believe it took me 4 months to notice I can lock the car by touching the rear door handle sensors as well as the fronts which is handy when I'm getting my work bag out of the boot (which I can close using the electric button on the hatch) and the warmer recent weather saw a return journey home giving an indicated 73mpg. Currently done 266 miles and 700 left in the tank so won't need the next tank until March. Probably only cleaned the car 3 times since last October due to awful weather plus the Blue colour really doesn't show the dirt unlike my previous 2 Black cars which were a nightmare needing constant attention.

  • Author

Recent milder weather has seen a dramatic improvement in my commuting averages with 68/69 and 73mpg seen on the last 3 journeys improving the since refuel average to 66mpg and the possibility of 1,000 mile range on this tank.
