Gandalf's Evolution

So Gandalf came back today, transformed into a Stage 3 machine!!

A very nice upgrade, which I'm enjoying a lot more than the Stg 2 upgrade.

It's still early days, but it just keeps pulling and pulling and pulling.

Dyno reveals a nice healthy 297 kw (403 hp) 550 Nm at the wheels power.

Mine being a FWD, the Galano boost-by-gear is working overtime, but doing a good job, to put most of that power through the front wheels.

The car can break traction in 3rd gear if push really hard!!

Upgrade involved:-

  • Garrett Powermaxx GT2260S Stg 1 turbo

  • Galano Port Injectors 1050cc

  • HPFP T-Piece and Bung for split system

  • NGK-R - Spark Plugs - Stage 2/3

  • Galano Pro ECU Stage 3 with TCU Upgrade

Because of the turbo upgrade, they flushed and put in new coolant, as well as the engine oil and filter.

Likewise wheel alignment was also done.

I'm enjoying the drive a lot more now.

Turbo has more drama now with whines and spooling noises.

Fair play to you, thats one cracking motor!

Awesome stuff. Bet that surprises a few onlookers when it disappears up the road

My original engine cover had APR badges on it which was no longer relevant, so I ended up replacing it with a EA888 Gen 3B engine cover version.
It fits just fine, just needed to add two ball studs, WHT007324. The intake manifold already has mounting holes for the studs to screw into.

Nice n easy.

Engine cover part no. is 06K103925CK.
I stuck a Skoda badge on top of the VW logo 😁

also habe ich sie schließlich durch eine FL-Motorabdeckungsversion ersetzt.

That's not a Superb facelift cover, it's from a Kodiaq. I had that one on mine back then, too.

My bad....I should've said EA888 Gen 3B engine cover.

I incorrectly assumed the FL Superb used the same cover.

I'll update my post.

It wasn't meant to be offensive. I just wanted to let you know.

No offense taken - all good 🙂

Thanks for pointing it out.

Engine cover from the ea888.4 is what would be in the facelift....but without trying to be a pedant, the crossover date is probably not exact for all parts. lllparts has bodyparts "to 7/7/2019" and "8/7/2019 onwards" so I think that's where the physical changes occurred on things like the front end, rear roundel to SKODA etc but not everything; there's probably a few early facelift cars that still have the DNUA (ea888.3b) engine. I was told by a tuner that there are some early S3 8Y which should have the ea888.4 still with the ea888.3b which caused some upset when they had work to do planned on the model rather than VIN which would have told them.

Anyway! Looks great - another tidy little addition!

Another preventative measure tackled over the weekend - replacing the failure prone plastic coolant vent union adaptor.

The factory plastic adaptor, given it's location right next to the hot turbo, is prone to crack and failure eventually, resulting in coolant leaks or loss.

After 8 yrs, turns out the plastic adaptor on Gandalf was still in good condition, including the O-ring.

Replacement part is made of aluminium.

I got an 034 Motorsport version, but there r plenty of other options.

Whilst I was at it, I also changed the rubber hose pipe that attaches to it.

Changing it is easier by removing the coilpack harness out of the way so u can easily access the vent union adaptor.

That said, it is still a very tight spot being in the "valley"!!

Also, have a 1L bottle of coolant ready as u'll loose a lot of coolant in the process - hence u need to top up. In my case, G12Evo (G12E050A2)

Part Numbers:-

  • Vent Coolant Union Adaptor - 034-102-Z048. Replaces factory part number 06K 121 143

  • Coolant Union Adaptor Hose - 06K121051M

  • Spring Clamps - N90686701
