Big Turbo setup for my 4x4

Is that a RR tested figure, Eddy? I guess gearing is going to be the limit rather than a lack of power

Ah right. It already does over 160 and I'm not sure I want to go more than that but you never know!

Mine did that with a mere 350 bhp on the road. If your hoped for figures are correct I think you will quickly exceed that

Is what figure RR tested? Although doesn't matter as my car hasn't been on an RR yet!

Yeah I'm sure it could do more. It got to that figure very quickly on the JBS test track which isn't particulary long.

JBS test track ;) I assumed the 160MPH was a speed recorded on a RR and was limite dby the rev limiter ;)

Now I understand ;)

The gearing of the TT box will allow a theoretical top speed of 180 at 7.5krpm and 192 at 8krpm. So plenty more than I have the intention to try.

I would imagine the aerodynamics of the Octavia could be potentially interesting - seeing as it was never intended to go that fast

It could be fine but equally it could all let go quite quickly.

Shame I'm not working at the airfield anymore :(

I've got to say the potential aerodynamic issue at high speed is something that has crossed my mind. I hope to do some testing at Bruntingthorpe if it can be organised.

Having driven both ColD's car with the WRC spoiler and my Estate at 140 on the airfield I'd say the estate is likely to feel more sure footed that the Hatch. I know some (DaveU) have gone for big spoiler to hold the hatch down.

Despit enot having any spoielr at all, my car felt just as sure footed as a hatch with WRC spoiler.

If you're following my logic, you may see what I'm trying to say - the estate seems to be more stable as standard.

I'll be interested to see what yo uthink of the DG shifter i the end - it is something I've considered for months but now SWMBO drives toe Octavia most days its slipped back a bit.

After exchanging a few emails with Jim from DG I've made some modifications to mine due it being out of tolerance. This has improved matters but I couldn't recommend one. I tried a prototype short shift at JBS at the weekend, it currently only reduces front to back throw but feels very OEM in it's action. They are also working on a side to side reduction. This would be my current recommendation for a short and is likely to be the one I change to. The front to back is available now AFAIK as the one I tried was fitted to a customers Leon FR that was there for a few things doing.

Would a TT hockey stick not be a good half-way-house ?

Worth trying for what they cost and should definetely feel OEM in it's action.

 I seem to remember talking to you about this on MSN around the start of this year - you need to check your memory banks, Eddy ;)

I remember, so are you gonna try it? No longer applies to mine since I now have a 6spd TT box so the standard selector is a TT one.

Well, how did the standard TT selector feel compared to your 4x4 selector? or did you bypass the TT one and go straight to the DG item ?

Not sure if I'll try it myself as I dont really have th eneed anymore. Perhaps I need to start another thread ;)

Eddy, it all seems to have gone very quiet with the conversion ????

Have you had a chance to get it on a RR yet to find out the Bhp/Torque ????

I don't think its been rolling roaded yet cos jbs still don't have there rollers up and running but i'm looking forward to seeing the results and i would also like to see how it goes down a drag strip should eddy ever decide to go down one:D

It's at JBS at the moment for one of their new short shift kits, a rear ARB and a new map with more boost. Will be collecting it at the weekend.

Sorry I haven't posted much about it but I haven't driving it much as we've been taking every opportunity for my wife to drive her car in preperation for her driving test which she took and passed yesterday.

congratulations to her:)

I thought it was about time for another little update.

Boost is now set at 1.5bar, the diesel geek short shift has been removed and replaced with a JBS short shift, the standard rear ARB has been replaced with an 19mm R32 item.

I'm now using the car everyday and as expected with what is essentially a new engine it has used a little oil, however fuel economy is much improved and I'm now seeing a calculated 22-23mpg which consists of various types of driving including frequent blasts. The latest map has also made further improvements to off boost driving and the car is happy to be driven at 2krpm which I believe is one of the major contributors to the improved economy. Also due to a tweak of the secondary air pump cycle cold start is very good and the car is ready to be driven within 30-60s of turning the ignition. The new JBS short shifter does exactly what I wanted, easy to engage, precise feeling and shorter throw and reduced side to side movement. As for the ARB I've not done much driving on the twisties yet but it has definetely improved things on roundabouts. Performance wise the car is quicker than ever and has a very usable powerband allowing overtaking manouvers of several cars without having to change gear. I've not yet had the opportunity recently to compare on road performance to anthying significantly quick but hopefully the opportunity will arise soon.

any idea of current power eddy?

No measured figures yet but estimated at comfortably over 400bhp. Forgot to say before but on this latest map boost now comes in below 4krpm and builds very quickly. I've not tried to find the topspeed but hit around 170 without even realising or trying on a relatively short stretch of road. It felt very stable hence me not realising the actual speed.

I really need to get round to doing some logging with vagcom for my own interest and also to assist in further development of my map.

power and torque logs from vag-com would be nice, not knocking your tuner but vag-com is totally independant so can't be tweaked by a less than honest person :)

  • Author

My car exceeds the torque limit that vagcom can measure IIRC.

Remind me which block it though and I'll have a look.

block 120 measure's torque output and gives you the rpm at which it made that torque so with a simple spread sheet you can work out and create a power curve :)
