Rear passenger door seal, leaking in.

Hi I've tried looking threw the forums but can't seem to find any photos or information on adding extra seal.

 

I've got an issue on my mum's car where water is leaking in and pooling on the floor.

 

Ive seen a few posts saying add some p shape seal to the bottom half of the door seal.

 

My question is where do you stick the seal? Is it tucked up to the outer part of the original seal?

 

Has anyone got any photos of there's, or links to any threads with photos on?

Very common fault with these Fabias. Whip the door card off and fire sealant around the metal carrier. @Wino is a good fella to talk to about this in depth. Just use bathroom sealant AFAIK.

Thanks, I'll give that a go, I've got some tubes of silicone in the shed :)

I used tec7 roof sealant because it was free but any sealant should be ok. apply liberally

I had two leaky doors and on both occasions the best way to prevent water ingress was to remove the door carrier, reseal and refit. You might get away without removing the carrier but I didn't.  However the carrier is riveted on later MK1 models like mine which is a pain. The picture links don't work, but there is a video on page 2.

Try this video for some tips (Mk1 but similar principal).

 

My door card is riveted so it couldn't be tightened against a new seal.  To make an effective seal I made sure the void between the door and the door card was clear of any knackered old remains and then applied my sealant in two stages.  The first being a thick bead to the inside of the door card and then once this had started to firm up (approx. 10 mins in my case), I applied a second bead on top and smoothed this up to and over the edge of the door card.  Left both doors to fully set overnight before replacing the trims and it's thankfully stopped the leaks.

 

I think it's important to chose a product that will set off under damp conditions to ensure it adheres correctly to the surfaces, especially if the area is already soaked with moisture.  In my case I used this product from Screwfix and decided to go with the white over the clear version so I could see where I had been.  You can make as much of a mess as you want as no one's going to see it 👀

I haven't got to the stage where I've had to do this but I don't think the rear at the driver's side is far away. Got a little water on the metal sill area but none inside... yet. :)

Your sills should be wet, that proves the door is draining properly instead of filling up with water.

That's alright, I'm just on edge as it costs me enough time and money as it is! :D

The carrier seals still leak even if the door is draining 100% perfectly. 

The problem isn't really that the doors fill up, it's that water gets (mis)directed onto the back face of the carriers as shown in the picture above in @garibaldy's link. 

 

 

Yep I had 1 leaking so did all 4 to be on the safe side luckily my door carriers are the type with bolts not rivets and I used outdoor gutter sealant to ensure a very good bond.

So just to be clear, are wet sills normal or should they be dry? :notme:

Is it raining?

Short answer....

If you open the door and there's water sitting on top of the door seal as you look down, it's leaking.

If you can't fix it now, at least make "curtains" of plastic or bubble wrap, attached to the outside of the door bins and going under the door. That'll collect a lot of the leaking and shove it back outside.

This was my OSR when it leaked. As @vindaloosays, you can see water sitting on the rubber seal. Fix ASAP as there is also a wiring loom under that plastic trim.

Someone did offer a solution to those who'd prefer to wait till summer and change seal /dry out car in warmer weather. it involves duck tape on the door rubber seal  at the bottom of the door. This stops water draining out of door and finding it's way into rear of car.

Similar but not. Drill holes, then cover with alu tape. :)
